Bloemfontein. The soothing sounds of Charlene Pierce van Heerden [email protected]

The soothing, soulful voice of Charlene Makaai is met with admiration when people hear the 22-year-old musician, who is ready to grow and develop her music ability, perform. Makaai, who is a LLB student at the University of the Free State, said that music has always been a part of her life. She started singing in her school choir when in grade 1, and kept it up all the way to grade 12. “I think my church also played a large role. My mom has been a praise and worship team leader in church for as long as I can remember and I'd be exposed to it, not only every Sunday in church, but also when attending practice and rehearsals with her as a kid.”. Apart from focusing on growing and developing her musical abilities, she has started to learn how to play the guitar, which, according to her, brought her to explore deeper into how the sounds of music are made. She covers a range of music genres as she is still one a journey to discover her sound. “I am currently in a place of discovery and exploration, so I do not yet have a defi nitive sound,” said Makaai. She has also featured on “The Other Days”, a song from = M. Rumbi’s EP “Weakdays”. “The music itself drives me. It is such a beautiful thing and every time I perform and record, I get lost and fall in love with it a little more.” For more, you can follow her on Instagram at charlene_rem or search "M.
