ABSTRACT From the 1970s the emergence of religion and spirituality in psychoanalysis is a unique development, given its traditional pathologizing stance. This research examines how and why ‘sacred psychoanalysis’ came about and whether this represents a new analytic movement with definable features or a diffuse phenomena within psychoanalysis that parallels developments elsewhere. After identifying the research context, a discussion of definitions and qualitative reflexive methodology follows. An account of religious and spiritual engagement in psychoanalysis in the UK and the USA provides a narrative of key people and texts, with a focus on the theoretical foundations established by Winnicott and Bion. This leads to a detailed examination of the literary narratives of religious and spiritual engagement understood from: Christian; Natural; Maternal; Jewish; Buddhist; Hindu; Muslim; Mystical; and Intersubjective perspectives, synthesized into an interpretative framework of sacred psychoanalysis. -

Demonstrating how empathising with women and understanding the context in which they live can affect childbirth outcomes and experiences, this evidence-based text emphasises the importance of compassionate and humane care in midwifery practice. Exploring midwifery as an art, as well as a science, the authors collected here make the case for midwives as professionals working ‘with women’ rather than as birth tech- nicians, taking a purely competency-based approach to practice. The book incorporates a range of pedagogical features to enhance student learning, including overall chapter aims and learning outcomes, ‘recommendations for practice’, ‘learning triggers’ to encourage the reader to delve deeper and reflect on practice, ‘application to practice’ case studies that ensure that the theory is related to contemporary practice, and a glos- sary of terms. The chapters cover perspectives on birth from sociology, psychology, anthropology, law, social policy and politics. Other chapters address important issues such as disability and sexuality. Outlining relevant theory from the social sciences and clearly applying it to practice, this text is an essential read for all student midwives, registered midwives and doulas. Patricia Lindsay did her nurse training in London, then trained as a midwife. She has been a practising midwife since 1974, and a midwifery teacher since 1991. She has worked in the UK and in the Sultanate of Oman. -

In recent months, we have considered various hosting arrangements for the Network with the potential to extend our offer for member schools and expand the geographical reach. We are therefore delighted to inform members that agreement has been reached with the Anna Freud Centre for them to host the Network and integrate activities with their national, Schools in Mind programme. Below we can hear from Prof Russell Viner, the chair of the Network’s Executive Group, and Dr Miranda Wolpert, Director of Anna Freud’s Evidence Based Practice Unit, with their views on the changes. For those of unfamiliar with the Anna Freud Centre there is more information about their work and Schools In Mind elsewhere in this newsletter. British Birds Vol. 55 No. i JANUARY 1962 A study of suburban bird-life at Dollis Hill By Eric Simms (Plates 1-2) INTRODUCTION UNTIL THE PRESENT TIME no thorough or systematic survey of the distribution and behaviour of the birds of a suburban area has appeared since F. D. Power's Ornithological Notes from a South "London Suburb, 1874-1909, published in 1910. This paper sets out the results obtained by the author from the study of Dollis Hill, a suburban area in north-west London. It is based on detailed observations carried out over a period of more than ten years from January 1951 to the summer of 1961, when I lived in the district, as well as on spasmodic observations from August 1943 to December 1950, when I was a frequent visitor. The area chosen for study lies within 1,250 yards or less of my home and can be comfortably managed by one observer; it contains five major habitats forming a fascinating, almost exclusively man-made, ecological unit. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF THE AREA The study area lies some five miles north-west of Marble Arch. It consists of approximately 546 acres (or five-sixths of a square mile) and is contained in a rectangle formed to the north by the North Circular Road, to the west by Dudden Hill Lane, to the east by the Edgware Road and to the south by the Midland Region railway, line of British Railways (formerly part of the Midland and South-Western Junction Railway). This rectangle of land is just over a mile across from west to east and slightly more than three-quarters of a mile from north to south (see Fig. -
