Number 1, 2013 ADRA Zimbabwe N e w s F l a s h FOOD SECURITY PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION ADRA Zimbabwe Launched a food security project on the 5th of October, 2012 in Binga and Bulilima Districts. The project at improving agricultural production, food and nutri- tion and income security for 5000 vulnerable and emerging smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. This is being achieved through the distribution of agricultural input (both crop and livestock) and output market, capacity building for the farmers and extension support. This project is funded by Australia Aid, UKAID and Department for International Department (DFID) through Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to the tune of $915,000 including commodities. ADRA Inter- national is also co-financing some elements of the project to the total of $5500. In Bulilima District farmers put their vouchers together to purchase bigger livestock like donkeys and cattle. The farmers have signed agreements on how they will use and share the livestock that was purchased by groups. Box HG 100, Highlands, Harare, Zimbabwe Website: www.adrazimbabwe.org Find us on Facebook Christmas in January for binga Binga District is in Matebeleland North province of Zimbabwe and lies in the hot and arid Zambezi escarpment, the region that was once the territory of the tsetse fly and on the south eastern shore of Lake Kariba. It is 509 kilometers from Bulawayo, about 153 kilo- meters from the Dete crossing on the Victoria falls road. In December 2012, ADRA Zimbabwe appealed to Friends of ADRA for Christmas hamper donations aimed at assisting mothers who wait for delivery of their babies at the District Hospital. On the 30th of January 2013 ADRA Zimbabwe delivered the hampers to mothers at the Binga District Hospital Waiting Mothers' Shelter. Waiting Maternal Shelters are built in an effort to reduce maternal mortality They provide shelter to the at risk pregnancies but also enable women who live far from the hospital to be close to the hos- pitalPregnant women come to these shelters two or so weeks before their due date to await the delivery of the babies at the hospital as the distances from their homes to the hospital are long and cannot make it to the hospital in time for delivery. Some medical sup- plies were also donated to the Binga District Hospital. ADRA would like to say thank you to all those who managed to support our Christmas donation. The needs assessment was con- ducted in Chiredzi, Binga and Bulilima Districts. Different characters of people came for one common cause, with the aim to be trained and then go to respective areas for needs assessment. Dawit Habtemariam and Gillian Bath from ADRA international conducted the training of enumerators, supervisors and coordinators. The training had moments of learning and getting to know each other. The learning process was done in the first week from the 23rd to the 28th of September 2012. The training was meant to better understand the questionnaire and the interpretation into different languages. The questionnaire Needs assessment team for Food for Peace in Bulawayo at the Zimbabwe Union was tested in Plumtree so that the team could familiarize Conference offices where the training took place themselves with it, and to also find out the practicality of the questionnaire. The team was then divided into three smaller teams that were dispatched to Chiredzi, Plumtree and Binga fro data collection for the 1st to the 12th of October, 2012. The information collected was used to develop a proposal from the 5th to the 13th of November, 2012 in a design workshop at Rainbow Towers in Harare.
