At university she stud- ied the literature of the Heian period (the ancient Japanese era lasting from the 8th to 12 centuries AD). She was deeply attracted to stories of ghosts and ogres in Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), and fell more and more into the world of traditional folklore. She currently lives in Osaka with her husband and two sons. There was a long era of writing stories that I wanted to read for myself. The origin of my creativity is the desire to write about a wonderous world that children can walk into from their everyday life. SHAKING UP JAPAN: EDO SOCIETY AND THE 1855 CATFISH PICTURE PRINTS By Gregory Smits Pennsylvania State University At about 10 pm on the second day of the tenth month of 1855 (November 11 in the solar calendar), an earthquake with a magnitude estimated between 6.9 and 7.1 shook Edo, now known as Tokyo. The earthquake’s shallow focus and its epicenter near the heart of Edo caused more destruction than the magnitude might initially suggest. Estimates of deaths in and around Edo ranged from 7,000 to 10,000. Property damage from the shaking and fires was severe in places, de- stroying at least 14,000 structures. As many as 80 aftershocks per day continued to shake the city until nine days after the initial earthquake. Despite a relatively low 1 in 170 fatality rate, the extensive injuries and property damage, lingering danger of fires, a long and vigorous period of aftershocks, and the locus of the destruction in Japan’s de facto capital city exacerbated the earthquake’s psycho- logical impact.1 Two days after the initial earthquake, hastily printed, anonymous broadsheets and images began to appear for sale around the city. After several weeks had passed, over 400 varieties of earthquake-related prints were on the market, the majority of which featured images of giant catfish, often with anthropomorphic features.2 These metaphoric catfish did not necessarily correspond to an actual species of fish, and I refer to them here by their Japanese name, namazu. The gen- eral name of catfish prints, which included visual elements and text, is namazu-e, with “e” meaning picture. -

Prior to Western influence, pre- modern Japanese society viewed imperial portraits as religious objects for private, commemorative use; only imperial family members and close supporters viewed these portraits. The Confucian notion of filial piety and the Buddhist tradition of tsuizen influenced the production of these commemorative or mortuary portraits. By the Meiji period, however, Western portrait practice had affected how Japan perceived its imperial portraiture. Because the Meiji government socially and politically constructed the ideal role of Emperor Meiji and used the portrait as a means of propaganda to elevate the emperor to the status of a divinity, it instituted controlled public viewing of the images of Japanese emperors. -

Since he has said he intends to search for elements of folk faith in the tales, his intimate contact with the setting and the nar rators should furnish something deeper in that respect. There are certain questions that come to the mind of the reviewer. Why is the ‘‘Nukabuku,Komebuku’,tale an autumn story, why the festival as the setting for match making, and why does the succor come in the moun tains? As Mizusawa goes further into his study of certain types of tales, we can expect him to gain more insight and more confidence in his conclusions. To prepare this book the author worked twice in Japan, one year from 1956 to 1957, later, in a shorter sojourn, from 1958 to 1959. He studied collections of namazu-e, “catfish (sheatfish, wels) pictures,” usually colour prints or painted on paper, sometimes on wood. Most of them were made on certain occasions for specific purposes for the satisfaction of the imaginative mind of the common people. Ouwehand studied a collection of 88 such pictures which is preserved in the Na tional Museum of Ethnology in Leiden since 1902,and another con sisting of 55 prints which were collected by the late Ch. -

A Preliminary Examination of the Omamori Phenomenon By E u g e n e R. S w a n g e r * Wittenberg University, Springfield Omamori in Japanese Tradition Among the phenomena of popular religious traditions in Japan are omamori or amulets and talismans, which have been enjoying an in creasing popularity over the past decade. Seen essentially as conduits through which the sacred power of life flows to human beings, these omamori are both consistent with and expressive of several themes long present in Japanese culture. In contrast to the Christian tradition, which characteristically lauds personal salvation and life beyond death, the accent of Japanese reli gious traditions,especially Shinto and folk, has always been on nurtur ing and enriching life here and now. Much religious energy has been expended on the ritual sustenance of the normal order: the health of the family, progeny, easy birth, bountiful harvests, protection from storms, prosperity in business and so forth. This order is normal in two senses: it is imbedded in norms which are prehistoric in origin and it is the usual and commonplace reality. The Japanese have been willing to accept this world as absolute in the sense that it has been characteristic for them to perceive kami 神 as residing in all kinds of objects. I f they have not rejected the notion of a transcendent presence existing over and above this realm, they cer tainly have given little importance to it. Any place or ooject could re fract an otherwise unseen or unperceived dimension of existence. we become aware of the reality of a certain being in an extra ordinary manner . -
