Edwards, Horneophyton lignieri Barghoorn & Darrah, Asteroxylon mackiei Kidston & Lang, Nothia aphylla Lyon ex Høeg, Trichopherophyton teuchansii Lyon & Edwards and Ventarura lyonii Powell, Edwards & Trewin. The superb preserva- tion of the silica permineralisations produced in the hot spring environment provides remarkable insights into the anatomy of early land plants which are not available from compression fossils and other modes of permineralisation. -

Induction in the Socratic Tradition John P. McCaskey Stanford University Abstract: Aristotle said that induction (epagǀgƝ) is a proceeding from particulars to a universal, and the definition has been conventional ever since. But there is an ambiguity here. Induction in the Scholastic and the (so-called) Humean tradition has presumed that Aristotle meant going from particular statements to universal statements. But the alternate view, namely that Aristotle meant going from particular things to universal ideas, prevailed all through antiquity and then again from the time of Francis Bacon until the mid-nineteenth century. Recent scholarship is so steeped in the first-mentioned tradition that we have virtually forgotten the other. In this essay McCaskey seeks to recover that alternate tradition, a tradition whose leading theoreticians were William Whewell, Francis Bacon, Socrates, and in fact Aristotle himself. The examination is both historical and philosophical. The first part of the essay fills out the history. The latter part examines the most mature of the philosophies in the Socratic tradition, specifically Bacon’s and Whewell’s. After tracing out this tradition, McCaskey shows how this alternate view of induction is indeed employed in science, as exemplified by several instances taken from actual scientific practice. In this manner, McCaskey proposes to us that the Humean problem of induction is merely an artifact of a bad conception of induction and that a return to the Socratic conception might be warranted. Aprons Instead of Uniforms: The Practice of Printing, 1776-1787 ROLLO G. SILVER WE DO NOT think of a master printer as primarily a busi- nessman. Because he controls a major channel of communica- tion, our tendency is to romanticize him while we forget that essentially his chief concern is the same as that of his fellow tradesmen—the bottom line of his balance sheet. In time of war, his hazard is doubled. Then all businessmen face the problems of scarcity, financing, possibility of dislocation, per- haps survival, but the printer also has the government and the public closely involved in his activities. The government uses some of his work and needs all of his support; the public assiduously heeds the opinions expressed in his publications. When the war is a civil war, such as the American Revolu- tion was in part, his predicament is even more hazardous. Maintaining a printing shop despite changes in civil authority requires ingenuity as well as tenacity and, if one holds to one's principles, courage. After all, the printer is a business- man whose stock in trade consists of twenty-six lead soldiers. It is impractical to describe all the aspects of the practice of printing during this period in one chronological narrative. So it is preferable to select those topics which best depict the activities of the printers between 1776 and 1787. 246 Combined Proceedings International Plant Propagators’ Society, Volume 52, 2002 The Role of the Veitch Nursery of Exeter in 19th Century Plant Introductions 247 Among interesting perennials are the luxuriant Myosotidium hortensia, the Chatham Island forget-me-not; blue poppies such as Meconopsis betonicifolia, M. grandis and the hybrid ‘Lingholm’; and many members of the Iridaceae such as Dietes, Diplarrhena, Libertia, Orthrosanthus, and Watsonia. The very distinctive Arisaema do well here, as do an increasing number of plants in the Convallaria- ceae, including Disporum, Polygonatum, Smilacina, Tricyrtis, and Uvularia. PLANTING CONDITIONS The windy conditions discourage the planting of large specimens, though the shallow soil in some places makes this physically impossible, while the severe infes- tation of honey fungus, Armillaria sp., precludes the direct transplanting of woody plants, which eventually fall victim to the fungus. Lifted rhododendrons are potted into very wide, shallow containers for a year or two before being surface planted, a method which has become the rule without cultivated beds, by simply placing the rootball on the soil and mounding up with the chosen medium. This seems to encourage establishment and may slow the invading Armillaria. Where rhododen- drons are planted on mossy rocks or stumps, particular care has to be taken during dry periods as the lack of mains water or any distribution system makes watering practically impossible and establishment unlikely. The Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Library: Safeguarding Britain's Horticultural Heritage Transcript Date: Wednesday, 22 May 2013 - 6:00PM Location: Museum of London 22 May 2013 The Royal Horticultural Society’s Lindley Library: Safeguarding Britain’s Horticultural Heritage Dr Brent Elliott The Royal Horticultural Society is the world’s largest horticultural society – membership passed the 400,000 mark this year – and it also has the world’s largest horticultural library. This would be the case even if we took only the principal branch, at the Society’s offices in London, into consideration; but there is also a major collection at the Society’s principal garden at Wisley, and smaller collections at its three other gardens. In 2011 the Lindley Library was given Designated status by the Museums and Libraries Association as a collection of national and international importance. 1. History Before I talk about the Library’s collections, I must give a brief history of the Society and its Library. The Society was originally known as the Horticultural Society of London; it was founded in 1804 by John Wedgwood and Sir Joseph Banks, and for its first two decades its primary purpose was to provide a forum where Fellows could read papers, the best of which were published in its Transactions, and display and comment on items of interest. By 1830, it had a garden at Chiswick, with a celebrated collection of fruit varieties; it was running a training programme for gardeners, among the graduates of which were Joseph Paxton, later to be knighted for his role in creating the Crystal Palace; and it was sending plant collectors to nearly every continent, and introducing many new plants into cultivation in Britain. -

RELEASE NOTE: This release includes updates to the main Register PDF and Excel files, including a massive revision to the Russian cultivar information as a result of a detailed review by our Assistant Registrar, Tatyana Polyakova. In particular, the Latvian cultivars have been updated and many Kravchenko cultivars from Uzbekistan have been added or revised. Also, multiple cultivars from Kazakhstan as well as those of Makedonskaya and Ihara have been updated or added. In addition, the Registrars have decided to maintain the British English format of cultivar names, based on 40 years of tradition and worldwide usage of the names, while converting the text to American English. This primarily affects abbreviations in the cultivar names, such that in British English, Dr, Mr, Mrs, and Ms are all written without periods after them, but in both British and American English, Mons. and Pres. do have periods. There are actually rules governing this. This release is the basis for the identically dated printed hardcopy release of the Register. It has 3561 entries including 1223 registered lilacs (in bold), 640 more with established but non- registered names, and 669 more with non-established names. There are 1025 entries with synonyms or rejected or unacceptable names.
