We discovered our flight to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines was delayed due to the late arrival of the incoming aircraft but finally we were airborne on the overnight flight. Day 2 Sunday 22nd September Addis Ababa to Antananarivo As we began our descent, it was clear we’d have a very tight transfer to make our onward flight connection, as would most of the other passengers on the flight. Ethiopian Airlines rose to the challenge however, and when we landed directed us to a fleet of buses, each duly depositing passengers at the right aircraft, without even going into the terminal. Once on board we met Luis, the last member of our group who had flown from Zurch, and were swiftly on our way. We arrived on time at Antananarivo Airport, where immigration formalities were slightly better organised than on previous visits.

    Helping diabetes sufferers Thanks to work carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford, patients with a particular genetic form of diabetes can now be treated with an oral tablet rather than an insulin injection, which dramatically improves their blood glucose control and quality of life. www.ox.ac.uk/oxfordimpacts In the past, people with neonatal diabetes faced a life of insulin injections. However, the discovery that their diabetes is due to activating mutations in the potassium channel has enabled them to switch to sulphonylurea tablet therapy. This has not only enhanced their blood sugar control and lowered their risk of developing the secondary complications of diabetes; it has also improved their quality of life and that of their families. In a few rare cases, patients with specific genetic defects not only have diabetes, they also show developmental delay, and start to walk and talk much later than expected for their age. Treatment with sulphonylurea tablets can often help these problems too.     HTTP://WWW.UPSCPORTAL.COM POLITICAL NEWS ELECTION COMMISSION AT 60 After overseeing 15 general elections to the Lok Sabha, the Election Commission of India, in its diamond jubilee year, can with justifiable pride claim to have nursed and st rengthened the electoral processes of a nascent democracy. The successes have not been consiste nt or uniform, but over the last six decades the ECI managed to make the worlds largest democratic p rocess freer and fairer. One of the instruments of this success is surely the Model Code of C onduct. D esigned to offer a level playing field to all political parties, it has been used to neu tralise many of the inherent advantages of a ruling party in an election. Although the model code wa s originally based on political consensus and does not still enjoy statutory sanction, it served as a handy tool for placing curbs on the abuse of the official machinery for campaigning. While ther e have been complaints of excess in the sometimes mindless application of the model code, th e benefits have generally outweighed the costs. After the Election Commission was made a three-member body, its functioning beca me more institutionalised and more transparent with little room for the caprices of an o verbearing personality. The diamond jubilee is also an occasion for the ECI to look at the challenges ah ead, especially those relating to criminalisation of politics and use of money power in elections. Neither of these issues is new. What is clear is that the efforts of the Commission to t ackle them have generally lacked conviction and have not yielded any significant results.

Personal Background The overall aim of this project is to use dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) as a prototype for other NAD(P) binding dehydrogenases to identify novel NAD(P) analogues that specifically target the NADPH binding site of DHFR as potent inhibitors of cancer cells. Specifically, we plan to investigate metabolism of NADPS in cell lines and in xenograft animal and to perform in silico screening of the NADPH binding site to identify potential new inhibitors targeted to DHFR. Lastly, we will determine further characterize the mechanism of action of NADPS in accelerating the degradation of DHFR in order to address development of drug-resistance to this new class of inhibitors.

    THE LINNEAN 1 Editorial This issue contains a profile of John Stevens Henslow, Darwin’s Cambridge friend and mentor (page 4). Henslow was not only responsible for Darwin’s appointment to HMS Beagle but also arranged to receive all tlie collected material shipped home to Cambridge. Moreover at the conclusion of the voyage he arranged for Darwin to be given a Treasury grant of &I,000 towards the publication of his zoological fiiidings. During the entire five years of the Beagle s voyage, Henslow corresponded with Darwin proffering advice and guidance and later publishing some of Darwin’s geological observations in the Cambridge Philosophical Society Proceedings.’ Darwin’s great debt of gratitude to Henslow is quite apparent from the tone of his letters to his old tutor: “I always like advice from you, and no one whom I have the luck to know is more capable of giving it than yourself. Recollect, when you write, that I am a sort ofprotkgge‘of yours, and that it is your bounden duty to lecture me.” (Devonport, Dec. 3 1831) “I will say farewell, till the day arrives when I shall see my Master in Natural History and can tell him how grateful I feel for his kindness and friendship.” (Sydney, Jan. 1836) And then when telling Henslow about his geological specimens: “My dear Henslow, I do long to see you, you have been the kindest friend to me that ever man possessed.” (Shrewsbury, Oct. 6 1836) The year after the Beagle ’s return Henslow was appointed rector of Hitcham, Suffolk (1837) and from that point onwards as Darwin noted: “he cared somewhat less about science and more for his parishioners.” Finally, in the last year of his life, Henslow came to the assistance of his student one last time by acting as Chairman of the 1860 British Association meeting at which Huxley (and Hooker and Lubbock) took up the cudgel on Darwin’s behalf.
