Some measurements, such as pre-dorsal length, pre-anal length, pectoral length and pre-pectoral length are in correlation with size; however, the b < 3 values display nega- tive allometry. The relationship between total length (TL) and the hepatosomatic index (HSI) is linked to size. Similar observations were recorded between TL and the gonadosomatic index (GSI), and between TL and condition (K). Of the 48 stomachs examined for contents, 29 were empty. A total of 19 items were found in the stomach contents, although partially digested. The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.

For each trawling location, environmental and geographical pa- rameters were recorded, while biomass, abundance, biodiversity and size-based metrics were estimated for the total megafaunal community, as well as for four taxonomic sub-communities (Osteichthyes, Chondrichthyes, Crustacea and Cephalopoda) which were expected to respond differently to environmental changes and fishing. In addition, biomass and abundance of ten species selected based on commercial interest, depth range and life history traits were explored, with particular emphasis on deep-sea species. Fishing effort data collected during the study period were analysed and showed a decreasing trend, mainly due to a decrease in the activity of static nets. The relation between the estimated parameters and environmental and spatial factors, as well as temporal (interannual) effects and the effect of fishing effort were explored using generalized additive models (GAMs).

SUMMARY: A four-year time series (1994-1997) of groundfish trawl surveys performed within the European Union Pro- ject “MEDITS” (Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys), was analysed to identify and describe the fish assemblages along the continental shelf and slope of Tuscany and Latium (Italy), in the north-western Mediterranean. Cluster analysis was used to group samples with similar species composition in terms of abundance, biomass and frequency of occurrence. Results allowed the identification of four to five broad assemblages along the depth gradient: a strictly coastal group (< 50 m depth), two groups in the upper and lower part of the continental shelf (essentially 50-200 m), an epibathyal group (200- 450 m) and a group derived from hauls made at depths greater than 450 m. Each assemblage corresponded to a faunistic association with relatively homogeneous and persistent species composition, biomass and density indices.

First records of Purplemouthed conger Pseudophichthys splendens (Anguilliformes: Congridae) from the Galicia Bank (NW Spain). A northward range extension of their distribution in the eastern Atlantic by Rafael BAÑÓN* (1), Juan Carlos ARRONTE (2), Alberto SERRANO (2) & Francisco SÁNCHEZ (2) RÉSUMÉ. Key words. - Congridae - Pseudophichthys splendens - North-east- ern Atlantic - Galicia Bank - Seamount - New record. The Congridae constitute a diverse and speciose eel family, including 36 genera and at least 192 named species. In the north Atlantic European waters, only four species have been recorded: Conger conger (Linnaeus, 1758), Ariosoma balearicum (Delaro- che, 1809), Gnathophis mystax (Delaroche, 1809) and Bathyuru- conger vicinus (Vaillant, 1888) (Quéro et al., 2003). The genus Pseudophichthys Roule, 1915 comprises two species: P. splendens (Lea, 1913) and P. macroporis Kotthaus, 1968. Never- theless, only P. splendens seems to be a valid species as the taxonom- ic status of P. macroporis is uncertain (Smith 1989; Castle, 1995). This paper reports the capture of two specimens of P. splendens in the Galicia Bank (NW Spain). MATERIAL AND METHODS The specimens were obtained by bottom trawl, one onboard the R/V “Cornide de Saavedra” during the survey ECOMARG 09, and the other on the R/V “Thalassa” from the survey BANGAL 0810, carried out both in the Galicia Bank, in the years 2009 and 2010, Figure 1.

  • The Status of the Fishes Described from Sicily by Rafinesque
FishTaxa (2019) 4(1): 99-124 Journal homepage: www.fishtaxa.com © 2019 FISHTAXA. All rights reserved The status of the fishes described from Sicily by Rafinesque Paolo PARENTI Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Milano-Bicocca, Piazza della Scienza, 1 20126 Milano, Italy. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Rafinesque described and named 241 species of fishes from Sicily, Mediterranean Sea. The descriptions are reported in four publications printed in the 1810 and 1814. Among these nominal species 30 represent valid species, 130 are recognized as junior synonyms, and the remnant 81 are unplaced, having no status on the Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (ECoF). This study reveals that most of these unplaced species can be synonymized with species that are well known from the area. In particular, it has been discovered that four nominal species predate well established fish name and are declared nomina oblita: they are Blennius juloides, Blennius lanceolatus, Blennius lupus and Gadus gardone. The corresponding junior synonym, Parablennius rouxi (Cocco, 1833), Gaidropsarus vulgaris (Cloquet, 1824), and Gadiculus argenteus Guichenot, 1850 are declared nomina protecta. The genus Nemochirus is here regarded as a new synonym of Trachypterus Goüan, 1770. Status of the genus Diepinotus is given in the appendix. Keywords: Parablennius rouxi, Gaidropsarus vulgaris, Gadiculus argenteus, Nomina oblita. Zoobank: urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A982CEEC-6CAF-4F00-8BCF-06721D598C36 Introduction Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (22 October 1783-18 September 1840) was an eccentric self-taught naturalist, a passionate systematist and namer, an insatiable explorer and collector particular prodigal to describe new taxa, eager to publish his findings to gain priority of discovery of new genera and species.

Introduction Marine ecosystems are covering approximately 70% of Earth’s surface and account for approximately 97% of all Earth’s water. Fishes account for more than half of all living vertebrates on Earth and they are the most successful vertebrates in aquatic habitats worldwide. Their diversity is very high and extraordinary, in terms of habitats they inhabit, morphology and biology. They inhabit all aquatic habitats on Earth, starting from temperate lakes, rivers and oceans, to extreme condition habitats such as ocean depths, swamps, temporary pools and ponds, underground ponds, etc. Regardless their diversity, all fishes can be defined as an aquatic vertebrates with gills and with limbs in the shape of fins (Nelson, 1994). Number of valid living species is almost 28,000, which are broken down in 515 families and 62 orders.
