The rains were spatially poorly distributed. The wet days managed to nurture the on-field crop particularly pigeon peas to flower and pod. In addition it supported the dry planted maize in tussling. The trend is not normal. 1.2 Natural vegetation and pasture condition Pasture situation remained stable compared to the previous month. However the situation is expected to start declining following poor performance of the long rains. The natural vegetation responded well to the onset of rains and some good regeneration could be observed in areas along Yatta plateau and sections of the mixed farming agricultural livelihood zone. As you drift towards Ikutha division within the marginal mixed farming livelihood zone the vegetation situation is worsening -both the pastures and natural vegetation are drying –up. To supplement the natural vegetation, farmers in most parts of the district are busy constructing hay burns for forage preservation. 1.3 Water Sources and Availability Waters stress is being experienced in the marginal mixed farming livelihood zone –Mutomo and Ikutha divisions. A 20 litre Jerrican of water in Mutomo is retailing at Kshs.20. Most of the earth pans are drying up and the distances to water points are fast increasing. Communities have started utilizing their strategic reservoirs particularly the rock catchment tanks, which is an indication that these regions are going to experience water crisis earlier than normal. In the mixed farming livelihood zone water is accessible and within reach. 1.4 Implication on Food Security The rain pattern depicts a bad future food security image. The currently planted crop is going to wilt an event that is going to drastically reduce the current food reserves. Generally, the pastures and natural vegetation are good and have sustained good livestock body conditions. The water situation has slightly negatively affected the food security situation. The increased return distances to the water points are consuming productive hours that could be invested in other enterprises. Soon it is expected to start weakening livestock. Due to congestion, the quality of water has been compromised and soon could lead to outbreak of water born diseases. 2.0AVAILABILITY 2.1 Livestock Body Conditions Generally, the livestock body conditions are good. There has been great recovery from the effects of RVF & LSD after mass vaccinations carried out in the district during the first quarter of the year. This situation is attributed to the availability of livestock feed in the grazing fields and access to water. 2.2 Livestock Diseases During the month incidences of Newcastle attack on poultry were reported in the marginal mixed farming livelihood zone. This according to the farmers is causing a lot of losses particularly in Mutha & Mutomo divisions. During the time of vaccination for cattle and goats, poultry which was equally susceptible to diseases was ignored and thus the upsurge in attacks. 2.3 Crop Production 2.3.1 Timeliness & Status of Crop An estimated 30% of the farm families planted in the district, majority being from the mixed farming livelihood zone. The planted crop is at various stages. The early planted maize crop in parts of Chuluni, Central and Matinyani divisions is tussling stage and is experiencing a lot of moisture stress. Elsewhere in Mutonguni, Ikutha Mutomo and Mutha for the few farmers who planted Maize is 1 foot high and drying -up. Few households within the mixed farming livelihood zone are consuming fresh beans from their farms. Pigeon pea crop in the field is doing fairly well. The early maturing variety is being harvested whereas the late maturing is flowering and has started exhibiting signs of moisture stress. 2.3.2 Pests and Diseases Cases of American bollworm & thrips infestation in pigeon peas were reported in Mutonguni, Chuluni and Ikutha divisions. Isolated incidences of weevil infestation in stored maize were reported in Mutitu and Mwitika. 2.4 Impact on Food Security The improvement in livestock body condition has ensured that farmers get good returns – from sale proceeds, milk and quality meat. The availability of pigeon peas has remarkably increased the food stocks at the household level as well as forage for livestock-farmers are spending little on food supplies. 3.0 ACCESS 3.1 Livestock Marketing 3.1.1 Cattle prices Average household cattle prices -Kitui district 22000 20000 18000 16000 14000 12000 10000 8000 6000 4000 2000 Price per head in Kshs 0 JFMAMJ JASOND Base Year 2004-2006 9514 8929 1078 1219 1301 1060 9786 7283 6528 6857 7796 8562 2007 7,675 7,200 8350 6000 20,43 Month The average price of cattle considerably rose -up. This improvement is attributed to improved livestock body conditions. It is also important to note that farmers are holding food stocks from the previous seasons harvest and are not under any pressure to dispose their livestock. Following the failure of the long rains farmers are wary of losing their mature stocks thus they have slowly started disposing them to acquire young stocks that require less feed to survive the drought. The trend is not normal. 3.2.2 Goat prices Average household price of goats -Kitui district 1600 1400 1200 1000 800 600 400 200 Price perhead in Kshs 0 JFMAMJ JASOND Base Year 2004-2006 1186 1300 1371 1507 1400 1225 1118 837 855 955 1037 1205 2007 1214 1173 1350 1306 1372 Month The price of goats remained within the previous months ranges. This stability is attributed to availability of food stocks at the household level and plenty of natural vegetation for the goats to feed on. The trend is not normal. 3.4 Crop Prices 3.4.1 Maize prices Average price of a kilo of Maize-Kitui district 20 16 12 8 4 0 Price per Kilo in Kshs in Kilo per Price JFMAMJJASOND Base Year 1998-2006 17 17 15 15 15 16 16 17 17 16 16 16 2007 18 17 8 8 8 Month The price of maize remained stable. There is little or no fluctuation in the demand and supply of the crop in the market. The opening of the NCPB buying centre at the district to offer better prices has not saved he situation. Farmers are not willing to sell their produce on credit. Quite a good number of farmers are stocking a lot of food and middlemen are taking advantage of the situation.
