Turner Resource Development Branch Department of Fisheries and Forestry of Canada Halifax, Nova Scotis l.t INTRODUCTION A program to evaluate the contribution of hatchery reared salmon smolts to sport and commercial fisheries in the Atlantic region was started in 196B. Part of this program included the tagging of wild native smolts in selected.rivers for comparison of returns with hatchery releases. This report presents results on 1969 and 1970 recaptures of wild native smolts tagged and released in the Miramichi River in 196B. The Miramichi River (Figure 1) is located in New Brunswick, has a drainage area of over 5,500 square miles and empties into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. 2.0 METHODS AND MATERIALS The native smolts used for the tagging project were captured in the estuary on their seaward migration and are representativ~ of the whole river and not one particular tributary. Fish were selected for tagging because of their vigor and good physical appearance (lack of scaled areas, abrasions, fun gal growth or'decayed fins). Although size was not a determining factor in selection of smolts for tagging, those under 12 cm. were culled as a precaution against damage from tagging needles. Tags used on all smolts were the modified Carlin type tied with black monofilament nylon twine and applied with a double needle tagging jig. -

New Brunswick Eastern Habitat Joint Venture Five Year Implementation Plan for the North American Waterfowl Management Plan New Brunswick Eastern Habitat Joint Venture December 14 2007 Executive Summary The New Brunswick Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (NB-EHJV) was established in 1989 to implement the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) in New Brunswick through a partnership of federal, provincial and regional conservation organizations. The NB-EHJV Five Year Implementation Plan to be known as the Plan is an update of the 1989 – 2004 NB Eastern Habitat Joint Venture Implementation Plan. The Plan outlines the current status of wetland habitats and waterfowl populations in New Brunswick and presents waterfowl population goals and habitat conservation targets for the next five years. The Plan is a blueprint for the conservation of important breeding, staging and wintering waterfowl habitat in New Brunswick. It describes the habitat conservation program the NB- EHJV partnership will employ to achieve the waterfowl population objectives, the methods for program assessment and the resource needs. Though this Plan may benefit other bird species, it does not explicitly address the objectives for the other bird Pillars of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI). The Plan will address 15% (1,105 IBP) of the 7,600 IBP population deficit for dabbling ducks (American black duck, Mallard, green-winged teal, ring-necked duck) in NB through the enhancement or restoration of 1,380 hectares of wetlands and the active management of 13,901 hectares of wetlands to optimum waterfowl brood rearing conditions. A nest box program will be used to increase wood duck and common goldeneye. -

In January 2008, the Province of Nova Scotia announced that Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co Ltd. had been awarded the opportunity to construct a tidal energy testing and research facility in the Minas Basin, known as the Fundy Tidal Energy Demonstration Facility. This Facility will be managed by a non-profit corporation called FORCE. The objectives of this study are twofold; - to undertake a broad MEKS study for the Bay of Fundy Phase I Area as it may relate to future renewable energy projects i.e. wind, tidal and wave, specifically in Phase 1 area of the Bay of Fundy ( as identified in MGC Proposal - Minas Channel and Minas Basin), and - to undertake a more focused MEKS review specific to the Fundy Tidal Energy Demonstration Project area which would consider the land and water area potentially affected by the project, identify what is the Mi’kmaq traditional use activity that has or is currently taking place within the Project Site and Study Area and what Mi’kmaq ecological knowledge presently exists in regards to the Project Site and Study Area. -

FOREWORD The concern generated within the main Atlantic salmon producing countries in the North Atlantic following the rapid growth of the West Greenland salmon fishery in the early 1960s, and the great scientific interest in gaining more knowledge of salmon during its sea phase led to steps being taken by the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (ICNAF) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) at their Annual Meetings in 1965 to organize an international scientific appraisal of this fishery development, with special reference to its effects on the salmon stocks and fisheries in home waters. A scientific Working Party, the ICES/ICNAF Joint Working Party on North Atlantic Salmon, with member ship from all North Atlantic countries with Atlantic salmon interests was established to undertake this task. The first meeting of the Working Party was held in 1966 and subsequent meetings were held each year thereafter up to 1974, their results being reported to the Annual Meetings of ICNAF and ICES respectively (ICES Cooperative Research Report Nos. 8, 12, 24, and 35 and Document CM 1974/M: 2). At the time when the Working Party was established, little was known about the biology of the Atlantic salmon during its sea phase. Hence, in addition to the collection of information on the characteristics and development of the West Greenland fishery itself, one of the Working Party’s most important tasks was the development of coordinated data collection and research programmes on aspects of its biology and population dynamics, especially those of direct relevance to the assessment of fishery effects.
