Development of Family Foundations in the United States and China
Research Report #28 April 2016 Development of Family Foundations in the United States and China: Case Studies of Four Family Foundations Carolyn Isles Shuang Lu Chien-Chung Huang Huamin Research Center, School of Social Work Rutgers University In the recent decades, the amount and size of family foundations have increased substantial- ly in the United States and China. Yet little research has examined this phenomenon and its impact on social development, particularly in China. In this study, we use the Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model to examine the status and roles of family foundations in the U.S. and Chinese society. Our case studies of four family foundations (two U.S. and two Chinese) sug- gest that these foundations were established in different contexts. Their input, process, and product vary by their mission, size, and context. Our findings provide policy implications for developing family foundations and maximizing their positive impacts on social development in the U.S., Chi- na, and beyond. It is well known that lizards can be infected by a subgenus of Leishmania parasites, i.e. Sauroleishmania, which is non-pathogenic to humans. However, evidence suggests that lizards may also harbor pathogenic Leishmania species including the undetermined Leishmania sp., discovered in our previous work. Leishmania DNA in lizard blood can be detected by using molecular methods, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Three hundred and sixteen lizards, representing 13 species of four genera, were captured for blood samples collection in Northwest China. Two reliable molecular markers (cytochrome b and heat shock protein 70 genes) were used for detection in the lizard blood samples, to confirm a widespread presence of pathogenic Leishmania parasites and the distribution pattern of Leishmania spp. in lizards from Northwest China. The PCR data indicated positive detection rate for Leishmania in all the tested lizards with an overall prevalence of 57.91% (183/316). Apart from lizard parasites like Leishmania tarentolae and Leishmania sp., several pathogenic Leishmania including L. turanica, L. tropica and L. donovani complex were identified by using phylogenetic analysis. Co-existence of different haplotypes was observed in most Leishmania DNA-positive lizards with an overall rate of 77.6% (142/183). -

The nutritional composition of fish muscle is an important reference data for the design of fish feed formulae. However, the nutritional composition of the muscle of Chinese hook snout carp has not been analyzed at present. In addition, considering the obvious individual difference between male and female Chinese hook snout carp, there may also be significant difference in nutritional composition. To provide a reference for the feed formula design of artificially cultured Chinese hook snout carp, the muscle nutrient composition of five wild male and female individuals was analyzed in this study. Our results showed that water, crude protein, crude fat, and crude ash contents had no significant differences between male and female fish. Although there was no significant difference in the contents of most amino acids between male and female fish, the contents of flavored amino acids, essential amino acids and total amino acids in male fish muscle were significantly higher than those in female fish muscle. The proportion of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids was 1.37:1:1.80, and most of fatty acids showed significant difference between male and female fish. -

That same year, when the EU and China agreed to formally publish the list of 200 geographical indications, Jinghe goji berries were accepted as one. “Being listed as one of the GIs helps us gain media attention from media and garner a larger group of customers,” Zhang said, adding that even with the negative effects on trade brought by the COVID-19 pan- demic, the company received orders for more than 1,000 tons of goji ber- ries from foreign clients last year. Apart from fresh and dried goji ber- ries, the company makes juices, wines and healthcare products from the fruit, which is rich in nutrients, to develop a well-rounded industry chain. Zhang pointed out that the next step is to increase yields. He views the China-EU agreement as an opportunity to revitalize the goji ber- ry industry in Xinjiang and the rest of China. Currently, Jinghe goji berry plan- tations cover 7,280 hectares in the county. There are 25 cultivation cooperatives, with more than 6,500 goji berry growers and 13 companies that can process the fruit, said Zhao Yuling, director of the county’s goji berry industry development bureau. These thirty-four entities have been determined by the U.S. Government to be acting contrary to the foreign policy interests of the United States and will be listed on the Entity List under the destinations of Canada; People’s Republic of China (China); Iran; Lebanon; Netherlands (The Netherlands); Pakistan; Russia; Singapore; South Korea; Taiwan; Turkey; the United Arab Emirates (UAE); and the United Kingdom. This final rule also revises one entry on the Entity List under the destination of China. This final rule also removes one entry from the Entity List under the destination of Germany. This final rule removes one entity from the Unverified List, as a conforming change to this same entity being added to the Entity List.
