Students with a GPA below 3.0 but who are in good academic standing with CMU will be considered on an individual basis. Program: • This is an immersion program, which means that you will be taking courses taught in Spanish and your classmates will be Chilean students. • Classes are held at the Austral University campus in Valdivia. Class Schedule: • Semesters: o Session 1: February 23 through July 15 o Session 2: August 8 through December 15 o Classes are typically taught five days a week Course listing: • Desarrollo social de América Latina y Chile • Problemas y tendencias de la literatura hispanoamericana • La comunicación narrativa • Taller de redacción • Comunicación poética • Panorama de la literatura hispanoamericana • Seminario de literaturas alternativas • La comunicación dramática y teatral • Lexicología Española, etc. Teaching Staff: Classes are taught exclusively in Spanish by accredited native Spanish professors. Professors have MA and PHD degrees. Housing: Students will live and take their meals with a host family in the Valdivia area. Room and board costs approximately $2,000 for the semester. Possible trips you can take: You can ski in the natural refuges owned by the Universidad Austral in the Andes Mountains. You can visit Chascona, the house of the famous Nobel-prize winning writer Pablo Neruda. You can enjoy the thermal pools in Aguas Calientes in addition to natural parks, camping areas and cabins around the area. The Chiloé Churches in Chiloé (found in the UNESCO World Heritage list) are impressive architectural sites made entirely out of wood without the use of nails to hold them together. Another site of interest is the Mapuche Indian Reserve. Valdivia’s attractions: The botanic garden is one of the main attractions of the campus. Over 1,000 vegetable species, mainly native plants and trees from the south of Chile, are grown there. Surrounding the campus in the University Historical and Archeological Museum, a compulsory place to visit by people arriving to the tourist city of Valdivia. You can take a boat trip in the Calle-Calle River and look for sea lions. In Niebla you can visit the Spanish Fortresses, Playa grande, Playa chica and the Santuario de la Naturaleza (Nature Sanctuary), and look at the swans swimming in the river.
