1 RAILS BY THE SEA 2 RAILS BY THE SEA In what ways was the development of the seaside miniature railway influenced by the seaside spectacle and individual endeavour from 1900 until the present day? Dr. Marcus George Rooks, BDS (U. Wales). Primary FDSRCS(Eng) MA By Research and Independent Study. University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

Smart Growth is an international movement dedicated to more sustainable approaches to these issues. In the UK it is based around a set of principles agreed by the organisations that support the Smart Growth UK coalition in 2013:- Urban areas work best when they are compact, with densities appropriate to local circumstances but generally significantly higher than low-density suburbia and avoiding high-rise. In addition to higher density, layouts are needed that prioritize walking, cycling and public transport so that they become the norm. We need to reduce our dependence on private motor vehicles by improving public transport, rail-based where possible, and concentrating development in urban areas. We should protect the countryside, farmland, natural beauty, open space, soil and biodiversity, avoiding urban sprawl and out-of-town development. We should protect and promote local distinctiveness and character and our heritage, respecting and making best use of historic buildings, street forms and settlement patterns. -

From the Midlands to Devon, steam train enthusiasts are trying to bring back those days of locomotive engineering grandeur. OPERATIONAL RAIL VEHICLE STRATEGY 2019-2034 OPERATIONAL RAIL VEHICLE STRATEGY 2019-2034 INTRODUCTION The Science Museum Group (SMG) through the National Railway Museum (NRM) owns the largest fleet of operating historic locomotives in the United Kingdom, so it’s essential that we have a strategy to ensure the most effective and efficient use of these vehicles. The NRM, Locomotion and Science & Industry Museum in Manchester (SIM) will continue to operate a select number of rail vehicles from our collection. Showing our collections in action is one of the most direct tools we have to share our key values with visitors: revealing wonder, igniting curiosity and sharing authentic stories. What’s more, our visitors expect a train ride. We need to meet that expectation whilst managing our collection in the most professional and responsible manner. A commercially viable and deliverable plan will see a core selection of operating vehicles at York and Locomotion within the maintenance capabilities of teams at those locations. These have been chosen for reasons of accessibility, affordability, income potential, attractiveness to visitors, practicality of operation and sustainable repair as well as the railway stories they reveal. We use our rail vehicles in various ways with priority always given for static display for our visitors at York and Shildon. Other ways in which we use them are: operation on museum sites; static loans to accredited museums; operating loans to heritage railways; main line operation. Our loans reach diverse audiences across the UK, making the national collection accessible to many. These vehicles are brand ambassadors for our mission of inspiring future engineers and scientists. -
