  • What Makes Me Feel Drawn to KROKE Music Is Spiritual Reality of the Musicians, This Means Honesty and Authenticity of the Music
What makes me feel drawn to KROKE music is spiritual reality of the musicians, this means honesty and authenticity of the music. Nigel Kennedy The music is too dark to really represent traditional klezmer. At times, it is almost as if the Velvet Underground have been reborn as a klezmer band. Ari Davidov KROKE live are a hair-raisingly brilliant, unforgettable experience. John Lusk At times they sound jazzy, at times contemporary, at times classical. Their music is at once passionate and danceable. Dominic Raui KROKE (which means Kraków in Yiddish) was formed in 1992 by three friends and graduates of the Kraków Academy of Music: Jerzy Bawoł (accordion), Tomasz Kukurba (viola) and Tomasz Lato (double bass). The members of the group completed all stages of standard music education, including contemporary music. KROKE began by playing klezmer music, which is deeply set in Jewish tradition, and adding a strong influence of Balkan music. Currently, they draw inspiration from a variety of ethnic music from around the world, combining it with elements of jazz and improvisation, creating their own distinctive style. Initially, KROKE performed only in clubs and galleries situated in Kazimierz, a former Jewish district of Kraków. There, for the first time, one could listen to KROKE's songs. They later recorded their first cassette released at their own expense in 1993. While performing at the Ariel gallery, they came to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who was shooting Schindler's List in Kraków at the time. Spielberg invited them to Jerusalem, where he was shooting the final scenes. The group performed a concert at the Survivors' Reunion for those of Oskar Schindler's list who made it through the war.

  • Nigel Kennedy Is Back and He's Showing No Signs of Mellowing
Still playing the rebel: Nigel Kennedy is back and he's showing no signs of mellowing Nigel Kennedy returns for a gig at London's Tower Festival as his seminal Vivaldi album gets a 20th anniversary re- release. He still has the haircut, the attitude, and he's still angry – about conductors, the price of CDs, Palestine, country music, Margaret Thatcher, and much more. Jessica Duchen met him, and then partied... Friday, 4 September 2009 Sunset over the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, and Nigel Kennedy is giving a special performance with his jazz quintet to mark the conclusion of the World Athletics Championships. "Berlin – nummer eins!" the mohican-crested renegade fiddler shouts to the crowd from a stage opposite the landmark. He takes a spoof bow, flapping his hands while pony-galloping forward and back, telling the crowd that this is "Shakespearean". "Oh, Nigel," his manager sighs, "what are you doing?" Later, after his trademark greeting, "monster!", we settle in his dressing-room tent, Kennedy nursing an outsize tumbler of neat vodka, to discuss what he really is doing. At 52, outwardly the bad boy of the violin hasn't changed much since his ever-controversial recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons 20 years ago, when it got into The Guinness Book of Records as the highest-selling classical album ever and caused near-apoplexy in the classical world. The record industry is marking the anniversary with a special re-release, but Kennedy has long since moved on. He works hard, plays hard – the night before he'd been partying until 9am – and never stops dreaming up new projects.

  • Conference Pack
Conference pack ‘Identities In-Between: East-Central Europe, c. 1900-present’ Wolfson College, Oxford, 12-13 September 2016 Convenors: Drs Jan Fellerer, Robert Pyrah (University of Oxford) and Marius Turda (Oxford Brookes University) Concluding conference of the four-year research project, ‘Sub-Cultures as Integrative Forces in East-Central Europe, c. 1900- present’, sponsored by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council http://subcultures.mml.ox.ac.uk/ Conference email: [email protected] CONCEPT Interrogating the notion of ‘identity’ remains a central concern in Humanities and Social Sciences research. For East-Central Europe, the subject has particular resonance: this was a region forged in diversity, remade after 1945 along ethno- national lines, and which in the present, continues to resist alternative narratives. This two-day conference engages with a specific definition of ‘sub-cultures’ through case studies drawn from the East-Central European region, over the period c. 1900-present. It concludes a four-year research project (http://subcultures.ox.ac.uk / http://www.facebook.com/subcultures.oxford) that proposes a new definition of the term. Its purpose is to understand identities that do not conform to the fixed, standard categories imposed from the top down, such as ‘ethnic group’, ‘majority’ or ‘minority’. Instead, a ‘sub-culture’ is an identity that sits between these categories. It may blend languages, e.g. dialect forms, cultural traditions, or ethnic identifications. It may be drawn on particular conceptions of race and biology that, similarly, sit outside national projects, or else in the interstices. In short, a ‘sub-culture’ in these terms is not ‘subaltern’, but is an identity resisting complete incorporation into the standard categories of ‘majority’ and ’minority’.

World-famous violinist NIGEL KENNEDY joins Polish jazz band KROKE at The National Concert Hall On Wednesday 27 July 8pm, the best-selling classical violinist of all time, Nigel Kennedy joins Polish jazz/klezmer band Kroke at The National Concert Hall for a unique performance to inaugurate the first Polish Presidency in the EU. Kroke (which is Yiddish for ‘Krakow’ their home town) plays original compositions based on the traditional Jewish melodies of East-Central Europe and the folk music of the Balkans. They also draw on the resources of classical music and jazz. Kroke play beautifully. They have a very natural way of playing, with great invention and great heart. There is an unbelievable pathos and truthfulness in the music. They're mad people, but it is brilliant music so said Nigel Kennedy. Kennedy is famed for his debut recording of Elgar’s Violin Concerto but more particularly for his recording of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1989 which sold over 2 million copies. That recording also earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling classical violinist of all time. After 1991, Kennedy took a step back from his highly publicized performance life only to return to the concert platform some five years later. In 1997 he received an award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music at the BRIT Awards and in 2011 received ‘Male Artists of the Year Award. In September 2002, Kennedy was appointed Artistic Director of the Polish Chamber Orchestra, a role the late violinist Lord Menuhin once held.
