  • What Makes Me Feel Drawn to KROKE Music Is Spiritual Reality of the Musicians, This Means Honesty and Authenticity of the Music
What makes me feel drawn to KROKE music is spiritual reality of the musicians, this means honesty and authenticity of the music. Nigel Kennedy The music is too dark to really represent traditional klezmer. At times, it is almost as if the Velvet Underground have been reborn as a klezmer band. Ari Davidov KROKE live are a hair-raisingly brilliant, unforgettable experience. John Lusk At times they sound jazzy, at times contemporary, at times classical. Their music is at once passionate and danceable. Dominic Raui KROKE (which means Kraków in Yiddish) was formed in 1992 by three friends and graduates of the Kraków Academy of Music: Jerzy Bawoł (accordion), Tomasz Kukurba (viola) and Tomasz Lato (double bass). The members of the group completed all stages of standard music education, including contemporary music. KROKE began by playing klezmer music, which is deeply set in Jewish tradition, and adding a strong influence of Balkan music. Currently, they draw inspiration from a variety of ethnic music from around the world, combining it with elements of jazz and improvisation, creating their own distinctive style. Initially, KROKE performed only in clubs and galleries situated in Kazimierz, a former Jewish district of Kraków. There, for the first time, one could listen to KROKE's songs. They later recorded their first cassette released at their own expense in 1993. While performing at the Ariel gallery, they came to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who was shooting Schindler's List in Kraków at the time. Spielberg invited them to Jerusalem, where he was shooting the final scenes. The group performed a concert at the Survivors' Reunion for those of Oskar Schindler's list who made it through the war.

Melancholie.

  • Book Reviews
African Studies Quarterly | Volume 17, Issue 4|February 2018 BOOK REVIEWS Semahagn Gashu Abebe. 2014. The Last Post-Cold War Socialist Federation: Ethnicity, Ideology and Democracy in Ethiopia. London: Routledge. 298 pp. Ethiopia’s ethnic federalism is under stress more than any time since its introduction in 1995. Waves of protest movements in Oromia and Amhara Regional states, in particular, have not given ethnic federalism an easy ride since 2015. Hence, Semahagn Gashu Abebe’s The Last Post- Cold War Socialist Federation is a significant contribution in understanding the sociology of Ethiopian federalism, the political context within which it came into being and is operating, and sheds light on why some ethnic groups are protesting. Abebe’s underlying objective is to explain how the configuration of a Socialist federation in the restructuring of the Ethiopian state makes the transition to and consolidation of democratization and respect for human rights difficult. Organizing the book in eight chapters, Abebe makes a compelling case on the disjuncture between constitutional design and practice in the operation of federalism in Ethiopia. His main hypothesis is that the ideological and political tenets of the TPLF/EPRDF, the ruling coalition since 1991, are more important than the formal constitutional rules in the operation of the federal system. Precisely because of this, he contends that there are two parallel constitutional systems in Ethiopia. In order to test this hypothesis, Abebe explores and examines in detail the scholarship on federal theory and comparative federalism in the first and second chapters. After examining the origin, essential components, basic features, and operation of democratic multi- cultural federations, Abebe could not find comparative relevance for the Ethiopian federal experiment in these systems.

ABSTRACT This work aims to analyse and to study in depth the novel Andrea Víctrix (1974) of Llorenç Villalonga, one of the author’s last works, so far little studied and representative of the dystopian genre in Catalan literature.

Schwarzenbach saw herself primarily as a writer. Yet she was also a pioneer of photojournalism in Switzerland. Around 300 of her texts appeared in Swiss magazines and newspapers during her lifetime. From 1933, they were increasingly accompanied by her own pho- tographs. However, since the majority of these images remained unpublished, the quality and scope of her work as a photographer has been relatively unknown until recently. Most of Schwarzenbach’s photographs were taken during her travels, which between 1933 and 1942 took her across Europe, to the Near East and Central Asia, to the United States and Central and North Africa. Her work as a journalist, but also her upper class background and her status as the wife of a diplomat granted her an extraordinary freedom of travel for the period. Her images and writings are closely intertwined and document the upheavals, tensions, and conflicts of the period leading up to World War II: the consequences of the Great Depression, the hope for social progress, the threat of National Socialism, the effects of modernization and industrialization, or the European fascination with the “orient”.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES PROGRAM FREYA STARK: A STUDY OF TRAVEL, GENDER, AND EMPIRE IN THE MIDDLE EAST FROM 1932-1950 LISA LOTITO Fall 2011 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in History with honors in History Reviewed and approved* by the following: Janina Safran Associate Professor Thesis Supervisor Catherine Wanner Professor Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. ABSTRACT Dame Freya Stark traveled to the Middle East and published The Valleys of the Assassins, The Southern Gates of Arabia, Baghdad Sketches, and East is West from 1932 until 1950, the year she penned the first volume of her autobiography. This thesis evaluates her travel writings for the way Stark employs travel, gender, and Empire in constructing her identity, the identity of both the British and Arabs with whom she comes into contact, and the larger relationships of the British Empire to the Middle East. Prior to 1932, Stark published an article entitled Women and the Service of the Empire. Shortly after she published this article, Freya received the prestigious Back Grant from the Royal Geographical Society and began a book deal with John Murray Publishers. From then on, Stark published thirty-two works for the British public about her travels. This thesis argues that prior to her fame, Freya viewed British women as a potential asset to the Empire because of their ability to aid in the relationship between the British and those they colonized. However, as Freya traveled, her conceptions of gender and Empire evolved.
