In the triadic relationship of female subjectivity among the self, mother, and imaginary father, the characters constantly question themselves while facing life-and-death dilemmas. Their self-questioning reinvents heterogeneous visual images of the maternal to create the strengthened vitality of female empowerment. Yinniang’s “multiple maternal identity” disorder is tinged with Asperger’s syndrome, but the spell of difficult verbal communication is eventually broken through her inner probing of the archaic past that triggers a renewal of her psychic life. Lacking access to maternal care, Wong Kar-wai’s Gong Er identifies with the imaginary father. Coupled with her father Gong Baosen and his successor Ip Man, she doubles herself as a father-mother conglomerate and reclaims her father’s name. Whereas Yinniang’s external-and-internal transformation silently redirects energy from external maternal figures that are reborn from the interior, Gong Er’s internal-and-external maternal eroticism is reproduced from the inside to contend with the paternal hegemony. They both, however, retrieve the forgotten zone of the body in lost time to find their future recalled by the imaginary father/other.

The focus is a prominent flashback in the climactic duel in the kung fu movie, Yip Man/Ip Man (Yip, 2008). This recollection-image demonstrates how trained bodies in Chinese martial art movies suggest a slightly different understanding of time and affect from that which Deleuze formulated, based on his observation of US and European films. On textual, cultural and historical levels this article explores the usefulness of martial arts movies for developing our understanding of physicality in cinema, and for reconsidering Deleuze’s ideas in light of the Eurocentrism of some of his conclusions.

Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 2015. pp. 364. $26.95. ISBN 978-1438456942. This outstanding book is the first scholarly examination of the history of a modern Chinese martial art in a Western language. While many of the modern Japanese martial arts have been documented and described, no similar work exists for the myriad of modern Chinese martial arts. Perhaps more impor- tantly, The Creation of Wing Chun is a social history that places the formation and development of the internationally known martial art of Wing Chun in a time and place. Judkins and Nielson have managed to produce a history that is an enjoyable read built on a sound historical foundation. It is a story that says as much about twentieth and early twenty-first century China as about a particular school of fighting. At its root is the history of the development of a Guangdong and Hong Kong identity in the form of a particular martial arts style. That identity formed in contrast to a monolithic Chinese nationality. Wing Chun was distinct and so was the region and culture that produced it. The book also places the history of Wing Chun at the center of a broader story about the place of martial arts in late imperial and twentieth century Chinese society. As the wider, modern, Western world intruded into southern Chinese society, the role of “hand combat” in that environment was called into question.

Martial arts and combat sports (MACS) offer a diversity of disciplines with their own intended training outcomes and techne. The traditionalist Chinese martial arts (TCMAs), such as Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) and Wing Chun Kung Fu, stress health promotion/preservation, personal development and lifelong practice. Adopting a structurationist framework, this article explores the connections between three distinct philosophies of health and TCMAs, institutions spreading such discourse, and the personal narratives of transformation and self-cultivation through these embodied art forms. Taking a perspective starting from the practitioners themselves, I explore the interplay between discourse and narrative as applied in everyday British society. Following detailed qualitative analysis, “Western scientific”, “contemporary Daoist” and “New Age” health philosophies are identified as explored via three detailed, reflexive cases of long-term practitioner-instructors, their schools and documents that connect them to international exponents across time. This article thus contributes to sociological knowledge on MACS and health, while considering the connections between health philosophies, discourse and narrative.
