Introduction AnthimosGazis 1(17581828)fromMēliesinMountPēlion,,isaknownscholar of the Greek Enlightenment 2 active in the late 18 th and early 19 th century. Among his earlycontributions,forthecaseofeducationandculturalrevivalofintheeveof theGreekWarofIndependence(18211828),thepublicationofhisgeographybooksand mapsisworthmentioning.Gazis’editorialinitiativesaredevelopedduringhisservicing asparishpriestattheGreekOrthodoxchurchofStGeorgeinVienna,thecitywherehis coetaneousRigasVelestinlis,alsofromThessaly,publishedhisfamous Charta intwelve sheetsonlythreeyearsbefore(1797) 3.Actually,theAnthimosGazismapofGreece 4in foursheets(Vienna1800)isconsideredasinspired(evenasderived)fromRigas Charta, bothengravedbyFranzMüller. plified and reduced world map by Gazis, also in Greek lettering, engraved again by Schindelmayer,isincludedinthegeographyschoolmanualStoikheiaGeōgrafias (Ele mentsofGeography)compiledbyNikiforosTheotokiswithcommentsandillustrations byGazis,printedinVienna 5fewyearslater(1804).Asecondgeographymanualedited byGaziswaspublishedinVenice(1807) 6. TheGazisworldmap,withtherepresentationofthetwohemispheresoftheearthglobe inapairofcircles,belongstotherichcartographictraditionofthedoublecircle planis feri 7mapsintroducedasatypeofearthglobemapprojectionsincetheearly16th century 8 andextensivelyusedin17 th century.Partofthistraditionisthefewmapsofthesame typologyinGreekletteringeditedbyGreekscholars,firstappearedin1700byChrysan thosNotaraswhopublishedtworelevantmapsinPadova 9. The Gazis world map

TheAnthimosGazisworldmapwaspublishedinViennain1800,togetherwithhismap ofGreece 10 .Thetwomapsofalmostthesamedimensions(ca.1X0.8mandca.1X1m respectively)printedinfoursheets,engravedbydifferentartists(F.Müllerthefirstand K.R.Schindelmayerthesecond)arebothpartofGazis’projecttocreateabacklogof educationmaterialforthesupportoftheGreekschoolswhich,accordingtoGazis,should bethebasisforaculturalandsocialregenerationoftheGreeknation.Thiswasthemain ideological background of many scholars and activists belonging to the stream of the GreekEnlightenmentin18 th andearly19 th centuryinwhichgeographyandcartography playedandimportantrole.ConsideringthetiminginwhichGazisspenthiseditorialac tivityonecouldclaimthatmapsandgeographymanualsenjoyedprioritysincetheyareof Gazis’firstpublishingcare. TheGazisworldmapinfoursheetsisofparticular importance. The presumably only knowncopytoday(Fig.1)belongstothemapcollectionoftheNationalLibraryofAus tralia(NLA)cutin16piecesforeasyfolding.Themapisawonderful,symmetric,aes theticallybalancedandhighlydensecompositionwherethetwohemispheresoftheearth globearedominatingtheoverallmapspace 11 ,twentyeightminorcircularmapsofvari ousdimensionsandthematiccontent(geographic,celestialetc.)arecompletingthecom positiontogetherwithtwosmallerworldmapsincardiomorphicandincylindricalprojec tionandamapofthesemiindependentprincipalityoftheOttomanEmpire,

TheGazisworldmapfollowstherichtraditionoftheworldmapsrepresentingintwo circlesthehemispheresoftheearthglobe.Thistraditiongoesbackto16 th centuryand thistypeofmapsbecomesamainmaptypologyduring17 th centurywidelyrepresentative intheFrenchandDutchcartography.

TheAnthimosGazisworldmap,whichclassifiedas“unusualandparticularlyrare”by NLA 17 ,wassponsored “infavourofthestudious ”by GeōrgioGoleskou(GheorgheGo lescu)theRomanianscholarwhoreceivedGreekeducation,knownalsoasIordacheGo lescu(17681848) 18 ,sonofthe “gloriousgreatnobleman VornikouRadoukanouGole skou”,asitisstatedinthemaptitle,olderbrotherofthewellknownilluministConstan tinRadovici(Dinicu)Golescu. The Gazis world map in Kozani InMay2008,atwoyearresearchprojectagreementwassignedbetweentheMunicipality of Kozani 19 , itsimportantMunicipal Library and the Aristotle University of Thessalo niki 20 aimingatthedevelopmentofanewMunicipalMapLibraryhousedintheGeorgios Lassanis 21 mansionatthecentreofthecity.ThehistoricMunicipalLibrary ofKozani, with roots in 17 th century,keepsasmallbutimportantcollectionof maps, atlases and geography books, mainly from 18 th century,referredtotheperiodofGreekEnlighten ment.OnecopyofRigasVelestinlisCharta iskeptinthisMunicipalLibraryamongother mapsandatlaseswhichwereneverbeforeputinevidence.Thebasicintendoftheproject istodocumentthismaterial,topreserveitandtomakeiteasilyaccessibleforstudyand exhibition. FromtheveryfirststudyvisitsattheMunicipalLibraryofKozaniinordertoobtaina firstassessmentofitscartographicbacklog,inMay2008,theauthorofthisnoteandhead oftheproject“discovered”theAnthimosGazisworldmap,theidentityofwhichwasnot knownbeforeamongthecartographyexpertsinGreeceorelsewhere(Fig.2, Left ),evenif itwaslistedinasmallcatalogueprintedprivatelyinthemidfifties 22 ,butevidentlynever identifiedinthecourseoftheyears.Thejoyfromthisimportantfindingwasunfortu natelydecreasedbecauseofthemaps’advancedstateofdeterioration(Fig.2, Right ). Themap,inintegerfoursheets,withoutanycuttingforfolding,wasurgentlysentfor restoration and conservation at the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki (MBC) 23 whereDr.AnastasiaTourta,themuseumdirector,generouslyorderedpriority

AfterfourmonthsofintenseworktheMBCpaperconservationteamconcludedthecon servationofthemap,whichisnowreadytobeaprestigiousmemberoftheKozaniMap Library. Fromtheuptodaydata,itisnotyetknownthehistoryoftheprovenanceofthismapat theMunicipalLibraryofKozani.Itisnot,e.g.,knownifthismapwaspartofthedona tiontotheLibraryin1853bytheKozanibornscholarEufroniosRafailPopovits(1774 1853) 25 , as it was Rigas Velestinlis Charta when Popovits bequeathed his personal librarytoKozani .Butitissurethatthismap,togetherwithRigasCharta,theprecious booksongeographybythetopscholarsofGreekEnlightenmentandother18 th century cartographicitems,willbeofprincipalimportanceforthenewlybornMunicipalMap LibraryofKozani.
