Abstract. This paper investigates Australian author Richard Flanagan’s novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and attempts to clarify the reason why Flanagan chose this title, which is linked to the travel writings of the Japanese author Matsuo Basho, for his novel. The novel focuses on the central character’s prisoner of war experience on the Thai-Burma Death Railway during World War II, and depicts the POW camp as well as cruel Japanese behaviour and atrocities in a realistic way. The work seems to provide a postcolonial framework in the sense that there is a colonial and postcolonial relationship between the colonizer, and the colonized. However, in this novel, the colonizer is Eastern, and the colonized is Western, and this fact reverses postcolonial theory which postulates a structure in which the colonizer is usually considered as Western and the colonized, Eastern. Postcolonial theory, thus, cannot be applied in this novel, which attempts to fuse the two opposites, the Western view and the Eastern view, through the work of the Japanese poet. As a result, Flanagan, in writing The Narrow Road to the Deep North, goes beyond being a postcolonial writer to become a writer in a globalizing age. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

The New Historical Novel: Putting Mid-Twentieth-Century Australia into Perspective This article argues that, since 2004 or so, a new kind of Australian historical novel has emerged among practitioners of literary fiction, one concerned with the mid-twentieth century. This new historical fiction has been characterized by an aesthetic stringency and self-consciousness. Though Steven Carroll and Ashley Hay will be the principal twenty-first- century writers examined, reference will also be made to several other writers including Carrie Tiffany, Charlotte Wood, Sofie Laguna, and to the later work of Peter Carey. In all these contem- porary books, technology plays a major role in defining the twentieth century as seen historically. As the mid-twentieth century recedes into the past, twenty-first-century Australian writers are coming to terms with it in ways that in turn affect their own novelistic practice. -

The Manifestation and Reception of British Identities Represented in the Man Booker Prize Iza Hemelaar s4222946 BA Thesis English Language and Culture Dr Usha Wilbers Hemelaar s4222946/ 2 Abstract This thesis examines how British identity is represented in the Man Booker Prize shortlists and winners. Through a quantitative analysis, it discusses the occurrences of identities among the authors and novels represented in the prize. This analysis examines the preference of an English identity in contrast to Welsh, Scottish and Irish identities. Moreover, it features an examination of the position of non-Western authors appearing in the Man Booker Prize as tokens. The analysis of themes and settings represented in the shortlisted and winning novels positions the prize as mediated by nostalgia for British cultural heritage and as featuring a preference towards postcolonial novels. Case studies of the critical responses to two winning novels illustrate the critical reception of these identities. Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children (1981), because of its vast success, exemplifies the role of postcolonial exotic identities within the prize. Midnight’s Children’s represented identities contrast with James Kelman’s How Late It Was, How Late (1994), which has undergone fierce criticism for its representation of a Scottish, marginalised identity. PUBLIC RIGHT TO KNOW 7.Arts journalism and exiled writers: a case study of fugal, reflexive practice ABSTRACT Arts journalism and reflective practice intersect in a new field of ‘journal- ism as research’ (Bacon 2006). This article takes an innovative approach informed by the multimodal, musical and psychogenic fugue to discuss a case study of arts journalism reflexive practice. The journalistic research topic is the impact of the traumatic journey of exiled writers on their creative writing, the empathetic effects of trauma and courage on their advocates and the impacts of researching trauma on the researcher. The journalistic, interview-based articles discussed in the case study are on exiled writers in Australia, Iranian poet-musician Mohsen Soltany Zand and Ivory Coast political journalist Cheikh Kone. In reflecting on processes of writing of the stories, the author begins to outline the foundations of an innovative, critical fugal methodology of reflexive practice for modes and pieces of arts journalism. The purpose of this article is to discuss a project of arts journalism as reflexive practice. The topic of reflection is an arts journalism research project that set out to interview exiled writers, and publish a journalistic story, with the purpose of reflectively critiquing this process. This research, which began its life with the working title ‘Refugee Writers: Beyond Detention’ was supported by a grant from the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism. -

How does the division and organization of the passages help to underscore the themes of time and memory that are revisited throughout the book? Likewise, consider how the structure allows the author to present a variety of points of view. What common themes does this help to uncover and what does it reveal about the common experiences of the characters? Does this form allow us to make any generalizations about the common human experience? Alternatively, how does the structure of the novel help to inform us about the difficulties and loneliness of the personal human experience? 3.
