The samples were identified based on both conventional methods and ITS rDNA region-based molecular phylogeny. By taking into account the high sequence similarity between the collected samples (ANK Akata & Altuntas 551) and Mycenastrum corium (Guers.) Desv. the relevant specimen was considered to be M. corium and the morphological data also strengthen this finding. This species was reported for the second time from Turkey. With this study, the molecular analysis and a short description of the Turkish M. corium were provided for the first time along with SEM images of spores and capillitium, illustrations of macro and microscopic structures. ABSTRACT — Sampling and analysis of gasteroid agaricomycete species ( Phallomycetidae and Agaricomycetidae ) associated with relicts of native Espinal forests in the southeast region of Córdoba, Argentina, have identified twenty-nine species in fourteen genera: Bovista (4), Calvatia (2), Cyathus (1), Disciseda (4), Geastrum (7), Itajahya (1), Lycoperdon (2), Lysurus (2), Morganella (1), Mycenastrum (1), Myriostoma (1), Sphaerobolus (1), Tulostoma (1), and Vascellum (1). The gasteroid species from the sampled Espinal forests showed an overall similarity with those recorded from neighboring phytogeographic regions; however, a new species of Lysurus was found and is briefly described, and Bovista coprophila is a new record for Argentina. SUÁREZ2 Resumen: La etnomicología es una rama de la etnobiología dedicada a estudiar el papel de los hongos en las diversas culturas. El estudio de los nombres que un pueblo aplica a los elementos de su entorno es útil como punto de partida para dilucidar patrones nomenclaturales subyacentes y con ello aproximarse a la manera en que la gente los conceptualiza, percibe, valora y clasifica. En Argentina, y particularmente en Córdoba, son escasos y fragmentarios los datos disponibles sobre los vínculos y conocimientos que los diferentes grupos humanos poseen sobre los hongos. Para contribuir a cambiar esta situación, se realizó una investigación etnomicológica con los campesinos serranos del poblado de La Paz. Se trabajó con un enfoque cualitativo; los datos se recopilaron mediante entrevistas abiertas, recorridos por el entorno y observación participante. Se registraron 26 nombres locales para 31 especies fúngicas estudiadas; éstos se analizaron lingüísticamente. Se encontró que los criollos agrupan a dichas especies en 9 categorías nombradas en base a, principalmente, características morfológicas y al sustrato. A partir de los resultados se propone un primer esquema etnoclasificatorio de las especies, donde se observa que las categorías vernáculas en ocasiones se traslapan y no conforman un sistema absolutamente jerarquizado. Thirty Plus Years of Mushroom Poisoning
Summary of the Poisoning Reports in the NAMA Case Registry for 2006 through 2017 By Michael W. Beug, Chair NAMA Toxicology Committee In the early years of NAMA, toxicology was one of the concerns of the Mycophagy Committee. The existence of toxicology committees in the Puget Sound and Colorado clubs stimulated the NAMA officers to separate the good and bad aspects of ingesting mushrooms. In 1973 they established a standing Toxicology Committee initially chaired by Dr. Duane H. (Sam) Mitchel, a Denver, Colorado MD who founded the Colorado Mycological Society. In the early 1970s, Sam worked with Dr. Barry Rumack, then director of the Rocky Mountain Poison Center (RMPC) to establish a protocol for handling information on mushroom poisonings resulting in the center becoming nationally recognized for handling mushroom poisonings. Encouraged by Dr Orson Miller and acting on a motion by Kit Scates, the NAMA trustees then created the Mushroom Poisoning Case Registry in 1982. Dr. Kenneth Cochran laid the groundwork for maintaining the Registry at the University of Michigan. Individuals can report mushroom poisonings using the NAMA website (www.namyco.org). The reporting is a volunteer effort and at the end of each year members of the NAMA toxicology committee assemble all of the reports for the previous year as well as any other earlier cases that can still be documented. Individuals are encouraged to submit reports directly through the NAMA website. In addition, members of the toxicology committee work with Poison Centers to gather mushroom poisoning reports. The toxicology committee has 160 toxicology identifiers living in 36 states and 3 Canadian Provinces. -

These and other impacts of fungi on folkways are here concisely reviewed under categories likely to interest professional and amateur mycologists and accessible to the lay reader. The evolution of popular perceptions of fungi is sketched from Shakespearean times through contemporary European and American cultures. Provided are specific instances of how different cultures utilized or avoided fungi, responded to fungal diseases of crops or humans, or viewed fungi in the context of popular belief, superstition or religion. (2009). Arizona gasteroid fungi I: Lycoperdaceae (Agaricales, Basidiomycota). Fungal Diversity 37: 153-207. Twenty-eight species in the family Lycoperdaceae, commonly called ‘puffballs’, are reported from Arizona, USA. In addition to widely distributed species, understudied species (e.g., Calvatia cf. leiospora and Holocotylon brandegeeanum) are treated. Taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, which include microscopic characters, are given for each species, and a dichotomous key is presented to facilitate identification. Basidiospore morphology was also examined ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out on nrRNA gene sequences (ITS1, ITS2, and 5.8S) from 42 species within (or closely allied to) the Lycoperdaceae. 2012 NAMA Toxicology Committee Report North American Mushroom Poisonings By Michael W. Beug, PhD, Chair NAMA Toxicology Committee P.O. Box 116, Husum, WA 98623 [email protected] Abstract In 2012, 35 of the 100 human poisoning cases we have reports for involved amatoxins. The vast majority of the amatoxin cases involved ingestion of the death cap, Amanita phalloides . Other cases involved destroying angels, Amanita ocreata, Amanita bisporigera and similar all-white Amanita species. There were three deaths in the United States from a single incident where elderly residents of a residential care facility were served soup made with deadly Amanita species. There were two deaths in two separate cases in Canada. While we often learn of the majority of amatoxin cases, we only get a small sampling of other mushroom poisonings since they rarely involve death of the victim. Of the cases with symptoms severe enough for the individual to go to the hospital, over 14% were adverse reactions to hallucinogenic mushrooms, predominately Psilocybe species. Chlorophyllum molybdites accounted for 12% of this year’s cases. Adverse reactions to various Morchella species accounted for 10%. We learned of 26 dogs and one horse poisoned by mushrooms, with 11 dog deaths, mostly from amatoxins. In two deaths, Inocybe species were implicated. In one death, two doses of atropine were administered to a dog who had consumed Amanita muscaria . Atropine markedly intensifies the effects of the toxins ibotenic acid and muscimol and so is contraindicated in such cases. In 2012, there were once again many reports of amatoxin poisonings, both in humans (five deaths) and in dogs (six deaths from apparent amatoxins). -

An 84-year-old mushroom picker become a social media sensation after finding a giant puffball in the woods. Don Smith was walking his daughter’s dog on his 100-acre property in North Dorchester, Ontario, Canada, when something caught his eye. It was a puffball that weighed 15.4 pounds and had a diameter of 20 inches. His daughter posted it on Facebook and overnight it was shared 2.600 times. This is not the largest giant puffball found. According to a 2011 report from the London Free Press, someone picked an 18 pound puffball that was 59 inches in circumference. The Guinness Book of Records stated at that time the largest recorded puffball was 66.5 inches around and was found in the UK in October 2010. Caramelized Puffball Butter Puree This caramelized puree ends up being a little weird looking during the cooking process, but the end result is fantastic. Chief Alan Bergo cooked 25 pounds of puffballs down to about 2 quarts of puree. Once you make the puree the uses are limitless: sauces, soups, stuffing, and as a butter. The butter is good on steak. Ingredients: 8 oz. puffball puree; ½ tsp. kosher salt; juice of one lemon plus lemon zest as desired; ¼ cup parsley; 8 oz. chilled, then diced unsalted butter, as needed; oil, as needed; warm water, as needed for pureeing. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Clean and peel the puffball(s), them chop them into 1 inch cubes.
