ABSTRACT — Sampling and analysis of gasteroid agaricomycete species ( Phallomycetidae and Agaricomycetidae ) associated with relicts of native Espinal forests in the southeast region of Córdoba, Argentina, have identified twenty-nine species in fourteen genera: Bovista (4), Calvatia (2), Cyathus (1), Disciseda (4), Geastrum (7), Itajahya (1), Lycoperdon (2), Lysurus (2), Morganella (1), Mycenastrum (1), Myriostoma (1), Sphaerobolus (1), Tulostoma (1), and Vascellum (1). The gasteroid species from the sampled Espinal forests showed an overall similarity with those recorded from neighboring phytogeographic regions; however, a new species of Lysurus was found and is briefly described, and Bovista coprophila is a new record for Argentina. They appear as foods, poisons, diseases, decorations, dyes or tinder, and even in insults, compliments, graffiti and video games. These and other impacts of fungi on folkways are here concisely reviewed under categories likely to interest professional and amateur mycologists and accessible to the lay reader. The evolution of popular perceptions of fungi is sketched from Shakespearean times through contemporary European and American cultures. Provided are specific instances of how different cultures utilized or avoided fungi, responded to fungal diseases of crops or humans, or viewed fungi in the context of popular belief, superstition or religion. The name Calbovista subsculpta var. fumosa is validated and the biogeographic status of Calvatia gigantea in southern Africa is discussed. The name Calvatiella lioui is lectotypified. Key words — Bovista cacao, Calvatia sericella, Calvatia sinclairii, Calvatia versipora, Calvatiella lioui Introduction In the course of our ongoing study of the genus Calvatia Fr. in southern Africa, we are continually encountering noteworthy facts and odd snippets of information, some of which—especially those pertaining to non-southern African taxa—are unlikely to find mention elsewhere in our papers on the southern African Lycoperdaceae. Individually, some items might perhaps be regarded as rather trivial, but collectively it all adds up to a substantial body of information that might be of value to other workers in the field as well as, in a few cases, even serve as stimulus for further investigation. A selection of those (often purely nomenclatural) items of information is presented in this miscellany of short notes. -

(2009). Arizona gasteroid fungi I: Lycoperdaceae (Agaricales, Basidiomycota). Fungal Diversity 37: 153-207. Twenty-eight species in the family Lycoperdaceae, commonly called ‘puffballs’, are reported from Arizona, USA. In addition to widely distributed species, understudied species (e.g., Calvatia cf. leiospora and Holocotylon brandegeeanum) are treated. Taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, which include microscopic characters, are given for each species, and a dichotomous key is presented to facilitate identification. Basidiospore morphology was also examined ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out on nrRNA gene sequences (ITS1, ITS2, and 5.8S) from 42 species within (or closely allied to) the Lycoperdaceae. Fungi from the Owyhee Region
FUNGI FROM THE OWYHEE REGION OF SOUTHERN IDAHO AND EASTERN OREGON bY Marcia C. Wicklow-Howard and Julie Kaltenecker Boise State University Boise, Idaho Prepared for: Eastside Ecosystem Management Project October 1994 THE OWYHEE REGION The Owyhee Region is south of the Snake River and covers Owyhee County, Idaho, Malheur County, Oregon, and a part of northern Nevada. It extends approximately from 115” to 118” West longitude and is bounded by parallels 41” to 44”. Owyhee County includes 7,662 square miles, Malheur County has 9,861 square miles, and the part of northern Nevada which is in the Owyhee River watershed is about 2,900 square miles. The elevations in the region range from about 660 m in the Snake River Plains and adjoining Owyhee Uplands to 2522 m at Hayden Peak in the Owyhee Mountains. Where the Snake River Plain area is mostly sediment-covered basalt, the area south of the Snake River known as the Owyhee Uplands, includes rolling hills, sharply dissected by basaltic plateaus. The Owyhee Mountains have a complex geology, with steep slopes of both basalt and granite. In the northern areas of the Owyhee Mountains, the steep hills, mountains, and escarpments consist of basalt. In other areas of the mountains the steep slopes are of granitic or rhyolitic origin. The mountains are surrounded by broad expanses of sagebrush covered plateaus. The soils of the Snake River Plains are generally non-calcareous and alkaline. Most are well-drained, with common soil textures of silt loam, loam and fine sand loam. In the Uplands and Mountains, the soils are often coarse textured on the surface, while the subsoils are loamy and non-calcareous. -

Abstract: Ten species of Lycoperdaceae classified into three genera, Bovista, Calvatia and Lycoperdon are reported from the Beartooth Plateau, Rocky Mountains, U.S.A. All are new records for this alpine area. Among them, Lycoperdon frigidum is a new record for the lower 48 States. Also, an alpine record of Calvatia booniana extends the known habitat of this fungus in North America. Introduction: The Rocky Mountains extend Montana and Wyoming which is part of the along the spine of North America, continuing Middle-Northern Rocky Mountain Floristic Zone 5,000 km from Canada to New Mexico, U.S.A. with tree-lines at ca. 3,000 m elevation (Cripps & The Beartooth Plateau is located north of Horak 2008). The Beartooth plateau has rich Yellowstone National Park along the border of alpine vegetation, consisting of woody Salix 160 Kasuya. -
