2017 Delfest Program WELCOME! Hi Folks. Welcome to DelFest. It seems impossible that this is the 10th annual event. I’m grateful and humbled that you continue to support what we do, and hope you appreciate the effort and time that goes into an event like this. Leading up to this year’s festival, we’ve been focusing heavily on the theme of “Family Reunion” and to us that’s what DelFest is. We see many familiar faces each year, some that have been coming to shows for 20+ years, along with some of our newer family - folks from local government, fans, friends, and supporters (especially the ones we call Del’s Army). We feel very fortunate that choosing the town of Cumberland brought you into our lives. We are glad to know each and everyone of you, and want to say a tremendous thank you for all of your support. While community is a big part of it, the music is where it starts. We are glad to have some of your favorites from the first nine DelFests back this year including Trey Anastasio Band, Railroad Earth, Steep Canyon Rangers, and our ever-present emcee, Joe Craven. We are also excited to bring our good friend Marty Stuart and his wonderful band to DelFest for the first time. We also have a few special surprises in store for you that we hope will make number 10 unforgettable. So, let me close by saying, remember we are all Family. We are joined by the love of music and community. I ask that you please keep that in mind as you go through the weekend and treat everyone like family... that’s what I’m going to do. Squire, Esquire,” Eric was a much beloved soul who meant so much to so many of us connected with DelFest. “He had the first idea for us to have a festival partnered with High Sierra which has now become DelFest. Who knows if there would be a DelFest without Eric. He was our conduit,” reflects Ronnie McCoury. Eric was there in the early nineties when the burgeoning bluegrass scene in Boulder, CO birthed bands like Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band. Eric’s passion for this music had him criss-crossing the country to see his favorite acts which always included the Del McCoury Band. His friendship with so many musicians transcended time and geography. He would show up in places from New York to New Orleans, Baltimore to Boulder. His intellect, wit, and humor kept his friends engaged, but his true passion was unveiled while the music was playing on the dance floor - his signature Chuck Taylors keeping his body swirling and whirling. He was incredibly proud to see his longtime friends come together and create DelFest, a festival for Del McCoury and his family. He made it his business to attend each year, even in failing health. We dedicate this year’s festival to his memory. May he always be dancing to the music for eternity. He will be dearly missed and remembered. G.C. McCoury It is with a heavy heart that I send along the sad news of the passing of Grover Cleveland McCoury II on February 27, 2017. Affectionately known by the family as G.C., he was born on February 14, 1930 and was 87 years old. Uncle G.C. was my father’s first musical teacher, showing him guitar chords at the age of nine years old. In the early days Dad and G.C. would play and sing in their Missionary Baptist church. By the late 1940s, G.C. was playing in Hillbilly bands in and around the local area of York County, PA. He was a talented musician and strong singer with quite a vocal range. It was during this time that he discovered this new music from the Grand Ole Opry that was, in his words, “hot as fire!” It didn’t have a name yet but would eventually be called Bluegrass. He said, “It hit me and Del pretty hard.” When G.C., who was nine years older and could buy 78 records, brought home 4. Flatt & Scruggs’s 1951 recording of “Roll In My Sweet Baby’s Arms” my Dad’s life was changed forever. Earl Scruggs’ s banjo playing captivated Dad and he had to learn to play the banjo and G.C. had to learn Bluegrass guitar rhythm. My dad said he wore the 78 records’ hole oblong playing it over and over figuring out Earl’s playing. They would play together till G.C. got married and started a family and Dad began playing with Keith Daniels. This would put my dad on his musical journey which continues to this day. Uncle G.C. would continue to play music mainly as a hobby and in church with his younger brother Jerry McCoury and his son Grover Cleveland lll through the 1970s. Uncle G.C. always had a loving and kind spirit and a wonderful smile to greet you. He indirectly influenced my and my brother Rob’s lives by being the catalyst for my Dad and for this I am so grateful. Because of our move to Nashville in 1992, our time was so limited with Uncle G.C. but I always looked forward to the McCoury family show at DelFest featuring G.C., Dad and Uncle Jerry. This is what I consider my roots in music and it was so rewarding to the family to have these moments. Fortunately, their sisters Elizabeth, Vivian, Jeanette and their families could always attend these wonderful special times too. So many people would come up to me throughout the year on the road and sincerely thank us for doing the McCoury family show. I know he’ll be there in spirit smiling and watching from above. Uncle G.C. was a devoted Christian with the strongest of Faith.     WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE.

    Nominations for 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards Announced Balsam Range, Sam Bush Band, The Earls of Leicester, Del McCoury Band, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers are the “Entertainer of the Year” nominees IBMA Announces 2019 Annual Inductees to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame: Mike Auldridge, Bill Emerson, The Kentucky Colonels Five Bluegrass Industry Innovators Announced as Recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award Nashville, TN, July 24, 2019 –Nominees for the 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards were announced today in Nashville, Tennessee. The extraordinary talent of the performers nominated for “Entertainer of the Year”- Balsam Range, Sam Bush Band, The Earls of Leicester, Del McCoury Band, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers - is evident, with 24 Bluegrass Music Awards nominations among the five nominees this year. Multiple nominations for Sister Sadie, Carolina Blue, Mile Twelve, Molly Tuttle, Missy Raines and Rhonda Vincent also are notable on this year’s list of nominees. Results of the balloting will be revealed at the International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday, September 26, at the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.     WELCOME! Who is ready for our 12th annual family reunion? When we call DelFest a musical family, we mean it. This year isn’t any different from the first eleven DelFests, we just really wanted to draw attention to the fact that so many of these musicians are family to us. I’ve known Sam Bush for almost 50 years. Railroad Earth has played nine DelFests. The boys have toured a lot with Keller and Yonder Mountain. I’ve watched Sierra grow up. I’ve recorded a Larry Keel song. I’ve known the Gibson boys for 20+ years. And on and on. These folks are our family, and we hope that DelFest feels like we are all sitting on the front porch jamming. It doesn’t stop with the musicians. All of you fans are also our family. The staff of DelFest are family. The people of Cumberland have become family. Every year we get to come together and celebrate with all of you. For us, it really is like going to a family reunion. All that’s missing is the potluck dinner, so you’ll have to settle for some amazing food from our vendors, many who have been with us from year one – making them also family.     WELCOME! Hi Folks. Welcome to DelFest. It seems impossible that this is the 10th annual event. I’m grateful and humbled that you continue to support what we do, and hope you appreciate the effort and time that goes into an event like this. Leading up to this year’s festival, we’ve been focusing heavily on the theme of “Family Reunion” and to us that’s what DelFest is. We see many familiar faces each year, some that have been coming to shows for 20+ years, along with some of our newer family - folks from local government, fans, friends, and supporters (especially the ones we call Del’s Army). We feel very fortunate that choosing the town of Cumberland brought you into our lives. We are glad to know each and everyone of you, and want to say a tremendous thank you for all of your support. While community is a big part of it, the music is where it starts. We are glad to have some of your favorites from the first nine DelFests back this year including Trey Anastasio Band, Railroad Earth, Steep Canyon Rangers, and our ever-present emcee, Joe Craven. We are also excited to bring our good friend Marty Stuart and his wonderful band to DelFest for the first time.     WELCOME! Hi folks, Thanks for joining us for DelFest 11. We are glad you are here. While we showcase many types of music here at DelFest, most of it has its roots in Bluegrass, and for this year’s festival we’re shining a big spotlight on Bluegrass, especially with the Bluegrass Congress on Saturday night. The gentlemen we have gathered for that set have made as big a mark on the music as anyone. They’ve taken the music that Bill Monroe created to new levels on their respective instruments. I’m very excited to get to share the stage with all of these friends – Dawg, Ricky, Jerry, Sam, Bryan and Stuart – for a night that I know I won’t soon forget. This focus on picking and bluegrass continues with sets from many of the top bluegrass touring bands on the road like Greensky Bluegrass and Old Crow Medicine Show, as well as the next generation of great pickers that are taking up the mantle, like Billy Strings and Sierra Hull, as well as a host of young bands that are creating some excitement. As usual, there will be a little something for everyone at this year’s DelFest, but I hope you look back on it when it’s all said and done, and say, “We might have just witnessed the world’s best and biggest picking party.” Most of you know what DelFest is about, but I’ll dare repeat it here for any newbies. We are all family, we love one another, we love music, and we are here to have a good time with each other.
