2018 Delfest Program WELCOME! Hi folks, Thanks for joining us for DelFest 11. We are glad you are here. While we showcase many types of music here at DelFest, most of it has its roots in Bluegrass, and for this year’s festival we’re shining a big spotlight on Bluegrass, especially with the Bluegrass Congress on Saturday night. The gentlemen we have gathered for that set have made as big a mark on the music as anyone. They’ve taken the music that Bill Monroe created to new levels on their respective instruments. I’m very excited to get to share the stage with all of these friends – Dawg, Ricky, Jerry, Sam, Bryan and Stuart – for a night that I know I won’t soon forget. This focus on picking and bluegrass continues with sets from many of the top bluegrass touring bands on the road like Greensky Bluegrass and Old Crow Medicine Show, as well as the next generation of great pickers that are taking up the mantle, like Billy Strings and Sierra Hull, as well as a host of young bands that are creating some excitement. As usual, there will be a little something for everyone at this year’s DelFest, but I hope you look back on it when it’s all said and done, and say, “We might have just witnessed the world’s best and biggest picking party.” Most of you know what DelFest is about, but I’ll dare repeat it here for any newbies. We are all family, we love one another, we love music, and we are here to have a good time with each other. So, be safe, have fun, and enjoy the picking party. Sincerely, Del McCoury and the entire McCoury Family 1. • Bryan Sutton Reveals New Depth with Fourth Sugar Hill Release, Into My Own
BRYAN SUTTON REVEALS NEW DEPTH WITH FOURTH SUGAR HILL RELEASE, INTO MY OWN Solo Record From Bluegrass Guitar Master Due April 29th Nashville, Tenn. (January 27, 2014) –Bryan Sutton returns to Sugar Hill Records with his fourth solo release, Into My Own, available April 29, 2014. “The goal,” Bryan Sutton says, “was to try to make a record that only I could make.” Indeed, even a cursory listen is enough to establish that Into My Own, his fourth album for Sugar Hill Records, fulfills that goal—and does so in a way that reflects not only the instrumental virtuosity that his admirers have come to expect, but also the spirit and sensibilities of a musician intent on challenging himself to continuously grow in every way. For those who think of him as just one of the best acoustic guitarists around, Into My Own will come as an unexpected revelation, while for those who’ve been following his evolution at least since 2009’s Almost Live, it deserves welcome as the culmination of a remarkable musical growth spurt—rich, varied, and, just as he says, a record that only he could make. For what Into My Own does for the first time is present Bryan Sutton, not so much on his own (though there’s a bit of that too), but as an artist who’s worked his way into a musical place that’s all his own, and not just as a phenomenal guitarist, but as a singer and songwriter. Featured alongside Bryan Sutton are some of the best pickers in the genre, also true friends and collaborators; Bill Frisell joins in for “Frissell’s Rag” while Noam Pikelny, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Stuart Duncan and more stop in to play a few.

  • Can Milwaukee Festivals Compete?
Arts and Entertainment Summer 2010 _________________ Donna the Buffalo’s Tara Nevins, left, and Woody Platt of Steep Canyon Rangers, both have played in Milwaukee, but are local festivals too big to showcase quality? Photos by Geoff Davidian Smaller venues offer sober, cleaner, family-friendly chance to see popular acts By GEOFF DAVIDIAN ILKESBORO, North Carolina – It was Sunday morning and Dan Fedoryka looked every bit a Baptist preacher in his white suit as he stepped out of the Church Bus, walked a hundred or so yards over a worn path and mounted the raised platform where he would perform a ritual that has become familiar in this Appalachian community. The sun was shining and it was already in the 80s when the 30-year-old former student at a Ukrainian seminary slipped off his jacket, folded it and placed it neatly on the back of a chair, rolled up his sleeves and turned to the energetic congregation. Then Fedoryka strapped on his guitar and jumped over some speakers to join his brother Alexander, childhood friend Josef Crosby and Mike Ounallah as the band Scythian jumped right into its third performance in two days at MerleFest, the annual gathering in Wilkesboro, NC, to worship and be baptized in quintessential American music. MerleFest began 22 years ago as a celebration of traditional American folk and bluegrass music but after more than two decades, it has opened its arms to a broader slice of regional and national talent. The event, dedicated to the memory of Eddy Merle Watson and to raise money for the Wilkes Community College, was held this year from April 28 to May 1 on the college campus.

  • A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr
A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr Introduction Over the past fifty years the guitar has had a very powerful influence on American music. Predominantly a rhythm instrument at the turn of the century, the guitar began to step out of the rhythm section in the 1930’s and 40’s and has maintained a dominant presence in every form of music from rock, to folk, to country, bluegrass, blues, and old- time. While Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other pop icons of the 50’s and 60’s certainly played a large role in bolstering the guitar’s popularity, the man who has had the deepest, most enduring, and most profound influence on the way the acoustic flat top guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today is Arthel "Doc" Watson. To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero.
