Photos by Geoff Davidian Smaller venues offer sober, cleaner, family-friendly chance to see popular acts By GEOFF DAVIDIAN ILKESBORO, North Carolina – It was Sunday morning and Dan Fedoryka looked every bit a Baptist preacher in his white suit as he stepped out of the Church Bus, walked a hundred or so yards over a worn path and mounted the raised platform where he would perform a ritual that has become familiar in this Appalachian community. The sun was shining and it was already in the 80s when the 30-year-old former student at a Ukrainian seminary slipped off his jacket, folded it and placed it neatly on the back of a chair, rolled up his sleeves and turned to the energetic congregation. Then Fedoryka strapped on his guitar and jumped over some speakers to join his brother Alexander, childhood friend Josef Crosby and Mike Ounallah as the band Scythian jumped right into its third performance in two days at MerleFest, the annual gathering in Wilkesboro, NC, to worship and be baptized in quintessential American music. MerleFest began 22 years ago as a celebration of traditional American folk and bluegrass music but after more than two decades, it has opened its arms to a broader slice of regional and national talent. The event, dedicated to the memory of Eddy Merle Watson and to raise money for the Wilkes Community College, was held this year from April 28 to May 1 on the college campus. -

Stephanie Meeks, the Director of the National Trust For Historic Preservation, has graciously written a short letter of greeting to the festival, as we feature some our special architecture around town during festival. We are thrilled to be performing an outdoor concert at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning, July 12 in the Philip Johnson Roofless Church featuring a nine foot Steinway piano courtesy of H & H Music in Evansville. Classical and traditional music inspired by works of architecture through history will fill the bill of fare for this very special “first” in festival history. -

GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds. -

Jeremy Kittel Band fiery blend of jazz, Celtic fiddling, and sultry world grooves “Outstanding Michigan Celtic-jazz-bluegrass fiddle whiz … “ — The Boston Globe “We’d call him a rising star, but he’s clearly already risen.“ — Detroit Free Press If you should run into Jeremy Kittel somewhere on this planet, ask him any question except “What’s your favorite style of music?” It’s not that he’ll be so offended as to reprimand you with his violin bow — on the contrary. As anyone who has seen him in concert can attest, his talent is matched by a kind of confident good nature that once spurred the Ann Arbor News to write, “If he didn’t come across as so nice, he’d be a little scary.” It’s just that Kittel, as someone who is truly steeped in a few very different musical traditions, has heard that question before … many times before, and it’s easy to understand why. When a musician is as likely to be found playing a ferocious set of reels in some dark pub in Ireland as he is likely to be found trading licks with a saxophonist at a hip New York City jazz club — and he is occasionally even seen doing such apparently odd-ball joining Turtle Island Quartet, Kittel was earning his masters things as exploring Indian classical music on stage at Carnegie degree in jazz performance at the Manhattan School of Music Hall — one starts to wonder … what is it that drives him? and skipping town on weekends to perform across the country Whatever the source of his inspiration may be, it has led to alongside fiddle legends Mark O’Connor and Darol Anger. -

It will be held from 4:00 to 9:00 PM on the grounds of the McLean County Law & Justice Center in downtown Bloomington on Saturday, June 26th. GLT/IP Summer Concert '99 will kick off at 4:00 with Deanna Bogart's sassy blues, followed at around 6:00 by the Duke Robillard Band's unique mix of jazz & blues. Finally, beginning around 7:45, the night's headliner, the Freddy Cole Quartet, will present their sophisticated brand of jazz. Freddy Cole is the younger brother of Nat King Cole and the uncle of Natalie Cole, and a star in his own right. GL T General Manager Bruce Bergethon is "thrilled to have GL T involved with bringing this caliber of jazz and blues to central Illinois. -
