Should have heard something on July 14th and was told sorry for the delay you should hear from us by the end of the week, still waiting. Recently I sent out an email blast to former and current SWBA members about a new event in So. Cal. Excited to help get the word out, I guess I realy didnt take the time to read all the details. So it didnt take long till serveral where asking for details and a few were upset with me. So I am truly sorry and owe you an apology. Serveal were involved in the planning of this event, including a few SWBA members. I’m sure this will be a sucessful event and a great time for all who attend. The last blast was to get info on jams in your area and with little responce lead me to believe that theres still not many jams. Some are still sorta private with only a few starting back up and serveral waiting for times to get better. You will notice as you flip through the pages that the Lets Go Jamming page is gone and a new page called Camp & Strum has been created with campouts, jams, park jams and live music. SWBA members live in serveral states and Canada. They travel to other states and maybe looking for a campout, jam, or event. If you have info please let us know by contactig me, Robert Wheeler or Patty Sullivan. In June, Eric Nordbeck retired has a teacher and our Music In Schools program Chairman. INTERVIEW WITH LUKE ABBOTT, MUSICIAN AND STRUM MACHINE CREATOR By Phoebe Leigh-Suelflow Luke Abbott was bit by the Bluegrass bug at age 11 when he and his family went to their first Bluegrass festival in Hollister. They had been playing music at home for years, but they weren’t connected to a musical community. Going to the festival and seeing how “jamming” worked was a revelation. The Abbotts soon acquired all the Bluegrass instruments, started going to lots of festivals and jams, and formed a family band. Luke became a sought-after sideman, playing in many Santa Cruz-based bands over the years, and has performed with Keith Little, Kathy Kallick, Laurie Lewis, Molly Tuttle, and others. His solo album, “Take Me Home” was released in 2010. He and his wife Bronwyn moved to San Luis Obispo shortly before the pandemic hit. In Santa Cruz, Luke was teaching up to 30 private music lessons a week. He felt it was important for his students to have backing tracks for the songs they were learning, so he recorded guitar tracks for them to play along with. The problem was that he had to record every song separately, at Strum Machine and to share it with their friends. There is multiple speeds, and sometimes in multiple keys. Not only also a Community Forum where users can share their charts did this take up a lot of his time, but the student was limited and lists. by the tracks he was able to provide for them. He kept wishing Luke has been working to improve the program for the past someone would build a backing-track generator that he could five years, first as a “side hustle” and now as his main focus. recommend to his students; the other tools that he found Many new features have been added over the years, and were either hard to use or sounded fake and uninspiring. He he has pages of ideas that he still wants to explore. One wanted something that was flexible, where you could easily project he’s tackling this summer is to re-record all the change the speed or key, loop troublesome phrases, or type sounds, a daunting task. He wants to add more strumming in your own chord progressions. After two years of searching patterns for the guitar, such as more dynamic Bluegrass for this tool, he thought, “Let me see if I can put something strumming and jazz/swing strumming styles. He would also together.
