But Tony Shalhoub isn’t Scenes: Adrian Monk. Not any more. After eight years of Monk’s obsessive-compulsive hand-wiping, pole-touching and mystery-solving “Monk.” the often under-appreciated Final Case show that re-vitalized USA Network, made Shalhoub into an Emmy- By Joe Rhodes winning star and spawned a wave of quirkily-observant tv detective imitators, has finally come to an end. The final episode, because this is “Monk,” will put everything in its place. Before it ends – with a Randy Newman song written especially for the finale – loyal viewers will have the answers they’ve been waiting for: Who killed Monk’s wife, Trudy, the crime that sent him into a catatonic state and has hung over the series from the very first episode? Will he be reinstated as a San Francisco detective? Will he ever unbutton that top shirt button? Is that Captain Mr. Monk would not have enjoyed Stottlemeyer’s real hair? (Ok, not the this; the way things ended after the last one). 25th and final take of the final shot of the final season of the show that There will, of course, be bears his name. Adrian Monk, complications along the way, not the germophobic, claustrophobic, least of which is that Monk will be emotion-phobic, would have been told he has only three days to live.

Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. Innovation has Let us celebrate the ways we will be... been a defining feature of every decade from early radio concerts in regional towns and country halls to the pioneering work of Sean O’Boyle in recording traditional music and Sam Hanna Bell’s 1950s programmes of Belfast’s Let us count the ways to celebrate. street songs. The broadcasts of the BBC Wireless Orchestra and its successors find their contemporary echo in the world-class performances of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC NI’s radio and television schedules continue to Let us celebrate.” reverberate to the diverse sounds of local jazz, traditional and country music, religious services, brass bands, choirs, (Roger McGough - Poems of Celebration) contemporary rock, pop and dance music.

  • Jim-Rooney-Daa-Induction-By-Menius
Jim Rooney DAA Presentation by Art Menius IBMA World of Bluegrass Awards Luncheon September 29, 2016 Jim Rooney did me a big favor, writing. In It for the Long Run: A Musical Memoir, so that I could do this presentation. That’s being a friend. Jim is a man who has done it all while enjoying being in it for the long run in many relationships. Think of Bill Keith, Eric von Schmidt, or his eventual spouse Carol Langstaff. At Owensboro I remember Jim, tall and commanding, as his left hand powered the rhythm on a kick ass rendition of Six White Horses.” Not that he limited himself to Monroe covers. His interpretation of the Stones’ “No Expectations” became a go to song. His love for bluegrass began back in Massachusetts in the 1950s when he heard on a band called the Confederate Mountaineers at radio station WCOP. Inspired by the Lillys, Tex, and Stovepipe, it wasn’t too long before Jim was on WCOP himself and hooked on performing. At Amherst he met Bill Keith who would be a friend and musical partner for much of the next 60 years. In 1962, they recorded “Devils Dream” and “Sailor’s Hornpipe,” the first documentation of Bill’s chromatic style shortly before he joined the Blue Grass Boys. The tracks appeared on their Living on the Mountain LP. Their many collaborations would include the revolutionary Blue Velvet Band whose music spread worldwide person to person Mud Acres, and concerts and tours with many different aggregations and combinations. Jim enjoyed sharing a heritage award from the Boston Bluegrass Union and brought us to tears at Bill’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

Friday, November 16, 8pm, 2007 UMass Fine Arts Center Concert Hall Unbroken Chain: The Grateful Dead in Music, Culture, and Memory As part of a public symposium, November 16-18, UMass Amherst American Beauty Project featuring Jim Lauderdale Ollabelle Catherine Russell, Larry Campbell Theresa Williams Conceived by David Spelman Producer and Artistic Director of the New York premier Program will be announced from the stage Unbroken Chain is presented by the UMass Amherst Graduate School, Department of History, Fine Arts Center, University Outreach AND University Reserach. Sponsored by The Valley Advocate, 93.9 The River, WGBY TV57 and JR Lyman Co. About the Program "The American Beauty Project" is a special tribute concert to the Grateful Dead's most important and best-loved albums, Working Man's Dead and American Beauty. In January 2007, an all-star lineup of musicians that Relix magazine called "a dream team of performers" gave the premier of this concert in front of an over-flowing crowd at the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in New York City. The New York Times' Jon Pareles wrote that the concert gave "New life to a Dead classic... and mirrored the eclecticism of the Dead," and a Variety review said that the event brought "a back- porch feel to the canyons of Gotham's financial district. The perf's real fire came courtesy of acts that like to tear open the original structures of the source material and reassemble the parts afresh - an approach well-suited to the honorees' legacy." Now, a select group of those performers, including Ollabelle, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Catherine Russell, and Jim Lauderdale are taking the show on the road.

  • 2017 Delfest Program
WELCOME! Hi Folks. Welcome to DelFest. It seems impossible that this is the 10th annual event. I’m grateful and humbled that you continue to support what we do, and hope you appreciate the effort and time that goes into an event like this. Leading up to this year’s festival, we’ve been focusing heavily on the theme of “Family Reunion” and to us that’s what DelFest is. We see many familiar faces each year, some that have been coming to shows for 20+ years, along with some of our newer family - folks from local government, fans, friends, and supporters (especially the ones we call Del’s Army). We feel very fortunate that choosing the town of Cumberland brought you into our lives. We are glad to know each and everyone of you, and want to say a tremendous thank you for all of your support. While community is a big part of it, the music is where it starts. We are glad to have some of your favorites from the first nine DelFests back this year including Trey Anastasio Band, Railroad Earth, Steep Canyon Rangers, and our ever-present emcee, Joe Craven. We are also excited to bring our good friend Marty Stuart and his wonderful band to DelFest for the first time. We also have a few special surprises in store for you that we hope will make number 10 unforgettable. So, let me close by saying, remember we are all Family. We are joined by the love of music and community. I ask that you please keep that in mind as you go through the weekend and treat everyone like family..

  • The World Before Scruggs
THE WORLD BEFORE SCRUGGS "Try to imagine the world before Earl Scruggs -- it's unbelievable!" This exclamation by Rick was how our May, 1985 talks began, and it offers a keynote for his music and his thinking. To hear this makes you realize there's a lot more to Rick Shubb than "the guy who makes those capos." Still, one little invention has made Rick's name a musical household word: the ingenious and beauti- ful guitar (and banjo) capo known, simply, as the Shubb capo. Actually, Rick's other products include the innovative Shubb banjo fifth-string sliding capo, the Shubb compensated banjo bridge, the Shubb- Pearse steel (a distinctive bar for Dobro and steel guitar), a pickup and amplifier designed specifically for the banjo (no longer on the market). Most recently, his aptitude for computer database develop- ment has led him to produce a line of computer software for musicians. The first in this line is SongMaster, which will keep track of your songs, followed by GigMaster, a booking tool for musi- cians. Both are easy and affordable, and now available. But the guitar capo in particular has really put his name on the map. A Profile of Rick Shubb By Sandy Rothman Yet, Rick's part in the history of bluegrass in college towns like Berkeley, riding the and became aware of the Ramblers, music in California and the Bay Area long crest of the folk revival. With the forma- eventually taking one banjo lesson from preceded his emergence as a businessman tion of the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, a Neil Rosenberg.
