Q Source But remember, dear friends, that the apostles of our Master, Jesus Christ, told us this would happen: “In the last days there will be people who don’t take these things seriously anymore. They’ll treat them like a joke, and make a religion of their own whims and lusts.” - Jude 1:17- 18 (MSG) In the mid-rst century, when Matthew and Luke were writing down their Gospels, they both included a trove of Jesus’ sayings called the “Q source.” When the New Testament’s table of contents was compiled, it excluded other texts like the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary, and gave privilege of place to Matthew, Luke … and Q. How were the decisions made about which Gospels to keep, and which to cast away? Was it sexism and patriarchy? An attempt to exert control over the populace as the hippie Way of Jesus hardened into a state religion? Or was Q closer to the truth than Mary or Thomas’s tellings? Who gets to decide what truth is, and what criteria do they use? There is a new Q circulating in our culture today that has nothing to do with Jesus, although many of the people proclaiming it are Christians. -
Hell: Never, Forever, Or Just for Awhile?

Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Theology and Pastoral Ministries The plethora of literature produced in the last two decades on the basic nature of hell indicates a growing debate in evangelicalism that has not been experienced since the latter half of the nineteenth century. This introductory article to the entire theme issue of TMSJ sets forth the context of the question of whether hell involves conscious torment forever in Gehenna for unbelievers or their annihilation after the final judgment. It discusses historical, philosophical, lexical, contextual, and theological issues that prove crucial to reaching a definitive biblical conclusion. In the end, hell is a conscious, personal torment forever; it is not “just for awhile” before annihilation after the final judgment (conditional immortality) nor is its final retribution “never” (universalism). * * * * * A few noted evangelicals such as Clark Pinnock,1 John Stott,2 and John Wenham3 have in recent years challenged the doctrine of eternal torment forever in hell as God’s final judgment on all unbelievers. James Hunter, in his landmark “sociological interpretation” of evangelicalism, notes that “. it is clear that there is a measurable degree of uneasiness within this generation of Evangelicals with the notion of an eternal damnation.”4 The 1989 evangelical doctrinal caucus “Evangelical Affirmations” surprisingly debated this issue. “Strong disagreements did surface over the position of annihilationism, a view that holds that unsaved souls 1Clark H. Write down your thoughts, questions, and emotions as you read the scriptures. Note if they remain the same or are different as you read on several occasions. What similarities do you find in these scriptures from chapter 1 and chapter 6? How do they support and reinforce one another? What promises do you hear in these scriptures? Now read the introduction and familiarize yourself with the lesson materials. First-century Christians in the Twenty-first Century: Does Evidence Matter? Dianne M. Bazell and Laurence H. Kant Since the turn of the new millennium, we have seen an immense resurgence of interest in the world of the Early Christians. Even as many biblical scholars have pared Gospel pericopes into fewer and fewer passages they are willing to attribute to Jesus, and some have even abandoned altogether the search for the historical Jesus as a naive and futile enterprise, the public appetite and demand for evidence of “the way it was” in Jesus’ time appears to be increasing. No two works could be more unlike one another in theological motivation and intent than Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ, and Dan Brown’s mystery thriller, The Da Vinci Code.1 Yet popular audiences have turned them both into resounding commercial successes and generated spin-off industries for their interpretation and further appreciation. Indeed, both Protestant and Catholic congregations have used showings (or critiques) of The Passion as a vehicle for religious education, while The Da Vinci Code has become a staple of book clubs and inspired guided tours across Italy and France tracing the adventures of its protagonists. Both works present themselves as accurate, evidence-based renditions of Christian history, and it is this popular demand for evidence, as well as its use and abuse in these two blockbusters, that we find most intriguing. No “faith in things unseen” for the modern orthodox—or for earnest heretics, either! Both Gibson and Brown appeal to source documents and reference ancient languages in their efforts to confirm or refute, respectively, specific institutional accounts of Christian history. -

Bauer Asbury Theological Seminary [email protected] Abstract The dominant method for Gospel interpretation over the past several decades has been redaction criticism, which depends upon the adoption of a certain understanding of synoptic relationships in order to identify sources that lie behind our Gospels. Yet an examination of the major proposals regarding the Synoptic problem reveals that none of these offers the level of reliability necessary for the reconstruction of sources that is the presupposition for redaction criticism. This consideration leads to the conclusion that approaches to Gospel interpretation that require no reliance upon specific source theories are called for. The Lost Gospel Of Q—Fact Or Fantasy?1 — Eta Linnemann * Imagine flying to a non-existent island on an airplane that has not yet been invented. Even if this impossible trip were to take place during the thirteenth month of the year, it would not be as fantastic as the tale, recently christened as scientific certainty by some NT scholars, concerning the so-called lost gospel Q and the earliest Church. The story of Q (short for the German Quelle, meaning “source”) is not exactly hot-off- the-press. It began over a century and a half ago. At that time it was part of the “two-source” theory of gospel origins. In the wake of Enlightenment allegations that the gospels were historically unreliable, it was suggested that their origins were instead primarily literary in nature. Matthew and Luke, the theory went, composed their gospels not based on historical recollection but by using the dual sources of Mark and a hypothetical document called Q. The theory was not without its difficulties, and it is no wonder that many Anglo-Saxon scholars—B. F. Westcott (1825–1901) would be a good example2—as well as formidable German-speaking authorities like Theodor Zahn (1838–1933) and Adolf Schlatter (1852– 1938) declined to embrace it. But it gained ascendancy in Germany, and to this very hour it enjoys a virtual monopoly there and widespread support in many other countries. The much-publicized Jesus Seminar has pushed Q into popular headlines of late.
