RC Church of Our Lady & St Catherine of Siena Sick and Retired Fund Our Lady & St Catherine of Siena As every year at this time, the Diocese runs an appeal on behalf of the Sick and Retired Parish Priest: Fr F. Javier Ruiz-Ortiz priests of the Diocese (the likes of Fr Michael Kennedy, Fr John Whooley or Fr Don whom some of you may still remember). ALL SAINTS No matter how much or how little we commit ourselves to honour their lives of service. 1st November 2020 Parish Masses for the coming week: Date Feast Time Mass Intention Today the Church celebrates the merits of all the Saints. Saints are set as examples to inspire us to act justly and righteously. That is why we do well to know their stories Sat 31st 6pm People of the Parish and to have representations of them in places we can see. In our parish there are images of 10 saints (St. Joseph; St Catherine; St Rose; St Dominic; St Hyacinth; St Therese of Child Jesus; St Peter; St Thomas; St Patrick; St Anthony ) as well as of Our Sunday ALL SAINTS 9.30am November Dead List Lady. Can you find them? What do you know about their history? 1st 11.30am November Dead List Alongside the images we have at home or in Churches or outside buildings, we Nov cherish in our tradition relics. Relics are fragments of the body or clothing from a 6pm November Dead List saint which remind us of their life and make present the power of God at work in his people. In our parish there are four relics. One of St Catherine given to us by the Mon 2nd All Souls 9.15am November Dead List Dominican Sisters of St Catherine of Siena when the Church was opened. Another one of Mother Teresa, another one of St Gemma Galgani and a fourth one of St Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. Whereas we have some hair of Mother Teresa we 7pm November Dead List have fragments of the bones of the others. We know well mother Teresa and also a little of St Catherine, who are the other two saints? Tues 3rd 7am November Dead List St Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother was born in Assisi in 1838 part of a large family. Pope Benedict XV canonised Gabriel in 1920 and declared him a patron of Catholic youth. St Gemma was born in 1878 in southern Italy. By the age of 19 she was orphaned and fell seriously ill. In 1899 she had a mystical experience and got the stigmata, the signs of the Lord’s passion.     Suor Gesualda Saldi SANTA GEMMA GALGANI CAPITOLO I UNA CONFESSIONE Io conobbi di vista Gemma Galgani; più volte mi trovai accanto a lei nelle lunghe attese al confessionale di monsignor Volpi, ma non m'ispirò simpatia. Non la conobbi mai personalmente, né le parlai, perché le nostre famiglie non erano in relazione. Sapevo che era una povera figlia accolta per carità dalla famiglia Giannini, che aveva ricevuto una grazia dalla beata Margherita Maria. Un' amica mi disse un giorno di lei: «E’un pollino freddo. Se si mette qui, sta qui; se si mette là, sta là», e ciò non accrebbe le mie simpatie. Un giorno, per caso, la vidi sorridere: l'incanto di quel sorriso mi colpì; l'ho sempre nella mente e nel cuore. Ecco tutto ciò che di lei mi rimase, tutto ciò che allora seppi di lei. Chi invece m'ispirava vivissima simpatia erano le due sorelle: Annetta ed Eufemia Giannini. Incontrandoci, pur senza conoscerci, ci facevamo dei saluti amichevoli. Per me, era una gioia quando vedevo spuntar da lontano quel gruppetto, e qualsiasi irritazione, o turbamento interno che provassi, si calmava come per incanto a quell'incontro. Lo attribuivo alla vista di quelle due dolci creature, non alla santa che era con loro. Capisco ora che quella pace era lei, invece, a infonderla in me. Dopo la morte di Gemma, mi parlarono di lei come di una santa, e la notizia mi commosse. Poi le opinioni più varie vennero a frastornarmi; ma il tracollo lo dette una persona che avrebbe voluto e dovuto farmela amare.

Gemma Galgani was the very first canonised saint to have lived in the twentieth century and from birth to death at the young age of twenty five despite her many infirmities portrayed a fine image. The art of photography was young but the many descriptions and pictures taken reveal a radiance of striking beauty. Unusual for the Italian her eyes, often raised to heaven were a bright and piercing azure blue and her long hair soft brown.

Were it not for stories, our lives would be unimaginable. Stories make it possible for us to overcome our separateness, to find common ground and common cause.2 —Michael Jackson, Politics of Storytelling After Holy Hour one morning in early November, Mia was holding a book with a picture of a young woman dressed in black on the back cover. The woman’s pale face looked tired. Her eyes looked up, outside the frame of the photo, and her hands were folded in her lap. When I asked Mia about the book, she smiled with characteristic enthusiasm and told me it was about St. Gemma Galgani.3 She prefaced her quick narrative sketch of Gemma’s biography with a gleeful, “Gemma is my girl!”4 After Mia turned twenty-five the following month, she declared it her “St. Gemma year!”5 Gemma was Mia’s age when she died of tuberculosis after a short life full of physical suffering and weekly experiences of the stigmata. Born in 1878, she was the only daughter of a middle-class and “deeply Christian” family in Lucca, Italy. Gemma worried that her four brothers were “not devout” and she often offered little sacrifices for their souls, a practice Mia adopted for her three “worldly” brothers.
