CHOOSING A CONFIRMATION NAME. A name identifies you in a unique way, not just your physical self, but who you are as person. One of the traditional practices in the Church at the time of Confirmation is choosing a name that will remind you of this sacrament. Your prayerful reflection will help you determine that name. You might want to recommit yourself to your baptismal name since it expresses the relationship that exist between these two sacraments, especially after you reflect on its meaning and discover some of the people who shared your name in Christian history. You might want to choose the name of a saint who represents the type of Cristian you wish to be. It is important to learn as much as you can about your patron saint. After all, you are asking this saint to be your friend and advocate for the rest of your life. Whether you decide to stay with your baptismal name or pick a new name, take the time to research and explore the root meaning of the name, for as Scripture says: “Yahweh calls each of us by name”. One of the most beautiful parts of your journey towards confirmation is choosing a patron saint, one of the great saints of our Church whose life in Christ is one that inspires you and calls you to be an ardent and radiant catholic. The saint are not just people who lived long ago! Moreover, they are alive in heaven now, totally present in our lives through God’s grace and their prayers. -

1 Ted Kirnbauer Luke 18:31-43 5/21/17 In Luke 9:51 it says that Jesus “set His face toward Jerusalem." The cross moved Him in that direction. Jesus had said that He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many (Mk. 10:45). From the very beginning He was declared to be the one who would save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:21) by offering the perfect sacrifice for sin that would satisfy the wrath of God (Jn. 1:29). 18:31 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 18:32 "For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, 18:33 and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again." 18:34 But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said. As Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem, He reminded them of what was about to take place. He was going to suffer and be killed. This was not the first time He had spoken of His death. In Luke 5:34 He alluded to it in the imagery of a bridegroom that was going to be taken away. Then, in Luke 12:50, He referred to His sufferings and death as “a baptism” He needed to undergo. -

THE BEATITUDES Matthews 5:1-12 The Beatitudes have been typically understood as: (1) Jesus’ Pronouncement of the rewards for the virtuous, committed Disciple (2) Signaling reversals for the unfortunate who are defined as the ones who suffer for the cause (3) Ethical requirements for participating in the Kingdom of God The word Blessed means to be fortunate or how happy because of circumstances or conditions. The benefits of living out what is associated with it are first internally then externally. Each of these “Blessed” statements present traits of those who honors and pleases God. They are grounded in Old Testament images and speak to the Kingdom of God as it is revealing itself in a new way. Jesus teaches us that to be one of his disciples, embodying and expressing these traits is a must. 5:3 Poor in spirit warns us immediately that the thought here is not (as it is in Luke 6:20) of material poverty but rather those who: a. Humbly trust God, even though their loyalty results in oppression and material disadvantage. Psalms 138:6 b. Dependent on God, not on material poverty as such. Exodus 14:14; Isaiah 41:13 c. Empty themselves of anything that distracts from a life of obedience. Gal 5:19-21 d. Control one’s thoughts, submitting to the authority of the Holy Spirit Phil 4:8 e. Lives in the daily realization that all gifts and blessings come from God. Note: To be Poor in Spirit is to live opposite of pride which is the driving force of many unhealthy and destructive traits and tendencies. -

A Sermon for Dayspring Baptist Church By Chris Fillingham “The Tears of Christ” Luke 19:41-44 March 28, 2021 Luke is a masterful artist in the way he puts together his gospel. And this morning, we have a front row seat to some of that artistry. But like many artists, I don’t always recognize how masterful they are until someone points out some of the magnificent subtlety. And what Luke does here, in what we heard this morning, is subtle and he’s the only gospel writer who does it. So, I want to make sure we don’t miss it because it’s easy to miss. In fact, I always missed it until it was pointed out to me just a couple of years ago. For starters, Luke tweaks what the crowds are shouting as Jesus is riding into town. It’s there in 19:38 if you want to take a look. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” they shout… and that sounds pretty familiar, right? That’s what we’re used to hearing on Palm Sunday. But did you catch what comes next? “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heavens.” That’s a little different for Palm Sunday. But it is familiar. It sounds a whole lot like something else that only Luke writes about. In Luke Chapter 2, a choir of angels appears to a group of shepherds announcing the birth of their Savior, and the angels sing, “Glory… in the highest heavens and peace on earth…” And remember, Luke is the only one to write about the angels singing at Jesus’ birth, and he’s the only one to put a similar song in the mouth of the crowd. -

Many churches incorporate children carrying palm branches into the worship service on this day. Another visual element from Palm Sunday is that of Jesus riding on a colt. What is the typical role of Palm Sunday in the life of the church? Discuss this with the group. Palm Sunday is ofen treated as a “warm-up” to Easter. It is certainly an important part of the Easter story, but it also demonstrates Jesus’ sorrow and helps us to prepare for God’s work in our own lives. -

1 Jesus and Zacchaeus Luke 19:1-10 Characters: Narrator, Jesus, Zacchaeus, Pharisee Narrator: A few days before Holy Week, Jesus was passing through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem. Jesus had stopped in Jericho, and began to teach the people there. Soon, a very large crowd began to gather. A tax collector by the name of Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was in town, and wanted to go see him. Zacchaeus: (to himself) Jesus is in town! I must go see him! But, how will I even be able to see him, with this large crowd? I can’t see over their heads! Narrator: Zacchaeus was a very short man. But he had an idea—there was a tall fig tree near where Jesus was preaching. Zacchaeus decided to climb it to see Jesus. Jesus looked up, and saw Zacchaeus. Jesus: Zacchaeus, come down immediately! I must stay at your house today! Narrator: Zacchaeus came down from the fig tree, and welcomed Jesus to his house, and prepared a magnificent feast for Jesus and his disciples. But some of the crowd members were very unhappy with what Jesus was doing. Pharisee: Look at Jesus! He has gone to be the guest of a sinner! Narrator: Zacchaeus stood up at the end of his banquet for dinner, announcing a donation to the poor. Zacchaeus: Look, Lord! I now give half of all of my money and possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I will pay them back four times the amount. Jesus: Today, salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.
