These islands have been compared to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador or Cocos Island in Costa Rica because of the big animal encounters they provide. The Revillagigedos Islands consist of 4 islands – San Benedicto Island, Socorro Island, Roca Partida and Clarion. Reiserute Day 1: Join the cruise in Cabo San Lucas Day 2-8 Eat, Sleep and Dive the Socorro Islands Day 9: Cruise ends after breakfast This volcanic archipelago is composed of four remote islands located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean rou the rugged Baja California peninsula in Western Mexico. They are uninhabited, wild and unpredictable and have often been called “the Mexican Galapagos” because of the startling size and array of marine life. All scuba diving excursions are done from live-aboard dive vessels leaving from the port of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Three of the islands (San Benedicto, Socorro, and Roca Partida) are typically visited on most liveaboard adventures. Initially gaining worldwide fame for the unbelievably close and intimate giant manta encounters, divers from all over the world are now realizing these islands have a lot more to offer. Declared a protected biosphere by the Mexican Government in 1993, the waters surrounding these islands are home to seven different species of sharks. In a time when shark populations are dwindling everywhere, a concerted effort by the dive operators at these islands has paid off. Encounters with silvertips, galapagos, schooling hammerheads and hundreds of silky sharks are not unusual. In November/December and again in May/June whale sharks can also be found and friendly encounters with bottlenose dolphins are common all season long! These islands are also the breeding grounds for a large population of humpback whales in the months of February to April making topside whale watching a delight and underwater sightings a very good possibility. Day 1: Departure from Cabo San Lucas about 4 p.m. to San Benedicto Island. Day 2: Arrival at San Benedicto about 1-2 p.m.(crossing takes 22-24 hours) rest of the afternoon is spent diving. Day 3: Day is normally spent diving around San Benedicto and considering weather possibilities for a crossing to Roca Partida. After sunset boat departs to Socorro Islands - crossing takes 4-5 hours. On occasion if weather looks good we might decide to try Roca before Socorro. San Benedicto Island Home of the world-famous "Boiler" where very friendly Giant Pacific Mantas congregate, San Benedicto is usually the first island visited on a Solmar V trip. This island is the third largest in the Revillagigedo group at about 2.6 miles long. It has two prominent peaks, one that is very obviously a volcanic crater. The walls of the volcano are eroded, leaving vertical ridges from top to bottom. The crater is almost 1/2 a mile wide. At the base of this volcano is a lava delta that reaches out into the ocean. The north half of the island is green with vegetation. One of our favorite dive sites here is "the Boiler", a large pinnacle that reaches from the depths to within several feet of the surface. Its small enough to swim around several times in one dive, but is large enough to be a favorite gathering point, attracting marine life from miles around. Humpback whales, whale sharks, and schooling hammerheads can be encountered here. What makes this site so magical is the congregation of very friendly Giant Pacific Mantas. They often greet our divers even before we get into the water and swim with us all day. Divers may observe many mantas who come hear to be cleaned by the endemic clarion angelfish. They seem to enjoy swimming closely over divers and stopping directly above to experience the bubble Jacuzzi on their bellies formed by exhaling bubbles from the divers. They often swim from one diver to the next posing for every photographer along the way. On the other side of the island is "the Canyon". Here we commonly see mantas, dolphins, hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks and Silky sharks. Day 4: Arrival Socorro Island early a.m. then quick check in at Navy Base for clearance. Most of this day is spent diving around Socorro Island. If conditions are good here or it is humpback whale season we might stay another day but usually we depart back to either San Benedicto or Roca Partida after sunset. Socorro Island is another island we visit during our Revillagigedos adventure. Socorro is about 30 miles south of San Benedicto. The island is about 10 miles by 9 miles in size and is home to the Mexican Naval Station since 1957.The island was discovered by Spanish explorer, Hernando de Grijalva and his crew in 1533 and had been rediscovered in 1542 and again in 1608 when it was given its name "Socorro", meaning "Help". In the center of the island rises volcanic Mt. Evermann, who's top is 1130 meters above sea level. The mountain was named after Dr. Barton Warren Evermann, director of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, California in honor of the scientific exploration he promoted there at the beginning of the twentieth century. It's most recent eruption was in 1993. The island is covered with low order vegetation—sage, some grass and a dense growth of cactus that grows around the lava outcrops and lines. In September 1997 the island was struck by Hurricane Linda, one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded. Solmar V usually visits dive sites here including Aquarium and Cabo Pearce Day 5: Arrival early a.m. to San Benedicto or Roca Partida, with diving all day. socorro island Day 6 & 7: These days are spent diving numerous sites around San Benedicto and/or Roca Partida depending on weather and if we have been able to get to Roca Partida previously. Both islands known for most of the large animal encounters on our trips. Departure after a full day of diving on day 7 back to Cabo. Day 8: Arrival to Cabo after a 22+ hour crossing, depending on weather conditions, which means the boat usually arrives after sunset on this day. Guests overnight in port and disembark the next morning after breakfast onboard. Our dock has a great location near town for those who want to get off and stretch their legs or visit the local night spots. Day 9: All clients must disembark after breakfast no later than 9 a.m. Our crew will help you with your bags and in arranging airport transportation. This is a general itinerary that is adjusted on a trip by trip basis according to weather and marine life. Having dived this area since 1992, our crew and boat are familiar with the changing conditions and knowledge to maximize your BIG animal experience.
