Close Encounters With the Environment Botanical Briefs: The Fig—Ficus carica L. Thomas W. McGovern, MD Clinical Importance Figs can cause irritant reactions with erythema, ulceration, or bullae; phototoxic reactions with bullae and hyperpigmentation sometimes followed by depigmentation and keloids; and chronic eczema with paronychia.1 These dermatoses occur in those who cultivate, gather, pack, or consume figs. The ability of fig plant extracts to stimulate pigmentation in vitiligo patients has been known for almost 2000 years,1 and in India fig extracts are used to treat eczema and psoriasis.2 In addition, the latex has been used as a treatment for warts.3 Family The family Moraceae (the mulberry family) contains 53 genera with about 1400 species, approximately 800 of which are in the genus Ficus. Family members include trees, shrubs, lianes, and herbs that usually have lacticifers with a milky latex.3 Distribution of Plant Ficus carica is probably a native of southwest Asia that rapidly spread to the Mediterranean region, where it was cultivated in Egypt at least 6000 years ago. Today the fig is cultivated mainly in temperate climates throughout the world but also thrives in tropical and subtropical regions. Ficus carica can grow among rocks, in woods, and in hot, dry soils. Ficus microcarpa Chinese banyan Moraceae Forest Starr, Kim Starr, and Lloyd Loope United States Geological Survey--Biological Resources Division Haleakala Field Station, Maui, Hawai'i January, 2003 OVERVIEW Ficus microcarpa is a popular ornamental tree grown widely in many tropical regions of the world. The pollinator wasp has been introduced to a number of places where the tree is cultivated, including Hawai'i, allowing this species to spread beyond initial plantings. F. microcarpa is a notorious invader in Hawai'i, Florida, Bermuda, and from Central to South America. Tiny seeds within small sized fruit are ingested by many fruit eating animals, such as birds. Seeds are capable of germinating and growing almost anywhere they land, even in cracks in concrete or in the crotch of other trees. The small seedling begins to grow on its host, sending down aerial roots, and eventually strangling and replacing the host tree or structure. In Hawai'i, most of the main islands are infested with F. microcarpa. Typically, this species invades disturbed urban sites to degraded secondary forests in areas nearby initial plantings. It has recently been observed growing on native wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicense) in lowland dry forests of Maui. On the main islands of Hawai'i, rapid containment once inside natural area boundaries may be the only feasible action, given the widespread distribution. On Midway Atoll, the wasp was introduced later than on the main islands and, as a result, F. microcarpa has only recently begun to spread there. With limited distribution, control here seems more feasible than on the main islands. To decrease the potential for this species to spread, it should not be introduced to new areas and could be removed in natural areas where it is limited in distribution. -

(Hemiptera: Psylloidea) on Ficus carica (Moraceae) Yacoub BATTA1* Daniel BURCKHARDT2 1Department of Plant Production and Protection, Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, An-Najah National University, Nablus, West Bank, THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES 2Naturhistorisches Museum, Augustinergasse 2, 4001 Basel, SWITZERLAND e-mails: *[email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A detailed morphological study of adult and immature Trioza buxtoni Laing, 1924 (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Triozidae) shows that the species belongs to the tropical and subtropical genus Pauropsylla Rübsaamen, 1899 to which it is transferred. The adult of Pauropsylla buxtoni (Laing, 1924) comb. nov. is redescribed and the previously unknown immatures are described. Illustrations are provided for both adults and immatures. Immatures of P. buxtoni infest leaves of Ficus carica and induce conspicuous galls. The species is a pest on cultivated figs in the Palestinian Territories. Four successive phases in the formation and development of the galls can be recognised in which the five immature instars ofP. buxtoni develop. The gall size increased significantly when the instar length increased and there were significant differences in the susceptibility of fig cultivars to psyllid infestation. The life cycle ofP. buxtoni is univoltine with no significant differences between cultivars. Key words: Triozidae, description, immatures, life cycle, cultivar, susceptibility, gall development.
