DANIEL LAQUA1 BELGIAN INTERNATIONALISTS, THE GREAT WAR AND THE QUEST FOR PEACE In 1932, Henri Pirenne – widely renowned for his work on medieval towns – published the final part of his Histoire de Belgique. The first instalment of his magnum opus had appeared more than three decades earlier and tackled a period long before Belgium’s independent statehood, from Antiquity to end of the High Middle Ages2. It was only with volume VII that Pirenne finally reached the era since the Belgian Revolution of 1830. The account drew a wider picture of the country before the First World War.

  • The International Peace Movement 1815-1914: an Outline
The international peace movement 1815-1914: an outline Script of an online lecture given by Guido Grünewald on 9 June 2020* I will try to give an outline of the emergence and development of an international peace movement during its first 100 years. Since English is not my mother tongue and I haven’t spoken it for a longer time I will follow a written guideline in order to finish the job in the short time I have. The first peace organisations emerged in America and in Britain. This was no coincidence; while on the European continent after the end of the Napoleonic Wars restoration took over there were evolving democracies in the anglo-Saxon countries and a kind of peace tradition as for example carried by the quakers who renounced any kind of war. For those early societies the question if a war could be defensive and therefore justified was from the beginning a thorny issue. The New York Peace Sciety founded by merchant David Low Dodge followed a fundamental pacifism rejecting all kind of wars while the Massachussets Peace Society (its founder was unitarian minister Noah Worcester) gathered both fundamental pacifists and those who accepted strictly defensive wars. With about 50 other groups both organisations merged to become the American Peace Society in 1828. The London Peace Society had an interesting top-tier approach: its leadership had to pursue a fundamental pacifist course while ordinary members were allowed to have different ideas about defensive wars. On the European continent some short-lived peace organisations emerged only later. The formation of those first societies occured under the influence of Quakers (one of the 3 historic peace churches which renounced violence) and of Christians who were convinced that war was murderous and incompatible with Christian values.

INTERNATIONAL RULES Henri LA FONTAINE 2018 PRIZE for HUMANISM Article 1 - Aims The Henri LA FONTAINE International Prize for Humanism is intended to honor living persons, institutions or active public or private organizations that have made a significant contribution to defending, disseminating and embodying the values held by 1913 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Henri La Fontaine, such as humanism, social justice, feminism and freedom of inquiry. This prize bears the name of the Belgian lawyer Henri LA FONTAINE (1854-1943), a specialist in international law who used his strong pacifist beliefs to influence society. In this same spirit of peace, he created the International Office of Bibliography with Paul Otlet in 1895. Also a Belgian Labour Party Senator and Freemason, he agitated for universal suffrage and was an advocate for women’s rights. 1 In 1913, Henri LA FONTAINE was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. • The Archives of Paul Otlet: Between Appreciation and Rediscovery, 1944–2013
The Archives of Paul Otlet: Between Appreciation and Rediscovery, 1944–2013 Stephanie Manfroid and Jacques Gillen Translated by Patricia M. Phillips-Batoma Abstract This paper outlines the life and work of Paul Otlet (1868–1944). Otlet was a founder of the scholarly disciplines of bibliography, documenta- tion, and information science. As a result of the work he undertook with Henri La Fontaine (1854–1943)—specifically, the establishment in 1895 in Brussels of the International Institute of Bibliography, which aimed to construct a Universal Bibliographic Repertory— Otlet has become known as the father of the Internet. Otlet’s grand project, as stated in his Traité de documentation (1934), was never fully realized. Even before his death, the collections he assembled had been dismembered. After his death, the problematic conditions in which Otlet’s personal papers and the collections he had created were preserved meant that his thought and work remained largely unacknowledged. It fell to W. Boyd Rayward, who began to work on Otlet in the late 1960s, to rescue him from obscurity, publishing in 1975 a major biography of the pioneer knowledge entrepreneur and internationalist progenitor of the World Wide Web. Introduction When Paul Otlet died in December 1944, the exceptional collective and internationalist project he had founded came to an end (fig. 1). While successors undertook to continue his plans for bibliography and docu- mentation, several decades would pass before his achievements were rec- ognized and for his legacy to be preserved and valued.1 His major contri- butions at the end of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries in helping to elevate bibliography and what he sometimes called bibliology to disciplinary status make him a father of these disciplines and one of LIBRARY TRENDS, Vol.

Introduction International Exhibitions, Paul Otlet, Henri La Fontaine and the Paradox of the Belle Époque W. Boyd Rayward From the close of the year 1811 intensified arming and concentrating of the forces of Western Europe began, and in 1812 these forces—millions of men, reckoning those transporting and feeding the army—moved from the west eastwards to the Russian frontier, toward which since 1811 Russian forces had been similarly drawn. On the twelfth of June, 1812, the forces of Western Europe crossed the Russian frontier and war began, that is, an event took place opposed to human reason and to human nature. Millions of men perpetrated against one another such innumerable crimes, frauds, treacheries, thefts, forgeries, issues of false money, burglaries, incendiarisms, and murders as in whole centuries are not recorded in the annals of all the law courts of the world, but which those who committed them did not at the time regard as being crimes … The people of the west moved eastwards to slay their fellow men, and by the law of coincidence thousands of minute causes fitted in and co‑ordinated to produce that movement and war (Tolstoy, War and Peace).1 The Proud Tower built up through the great age of European Civilisation was an edifice of grandeur and passion, of riches and beauty and dark cellars. Its inhabitants lived, as compared to a later time, with more self‑reliance, more confidence, more hope; greater magnificence, extravagance and elegance; more careless ease, more gaiety, more pleasure in each other’s company and conversation, more injustice and hypocrisy, more misery and want, more sentiment including false sentiment, less sufferance of mediocrity, more dignity in work; more delight in nature, more zest.
