DutchCham (Singapore) and MDBC (Malaysian Dutch Business Council) organized a two-day fact-finding trip to Johor, Malaysia with the support of the Netherlands Embassies in Singa- pore and in Kuala Lumpur, attended by H.E. Ambassadors Mr Jacques Werner and Mr Harry Molenaar.

The interest of the 60 delegates lay in the developments in Johor, but specifically in the sectors of Oil & Gas, Maritime, Logistics & Services (Day 1 at Pengerang) and Logistics, Education, Property, Services, Shared Services & Outsourcing and Manu- facturing (Day 2 at Nusajaya). Besides forging and fostering business ties between Malaysia and the Nether- lands, the visit aimed to learn about the current and future developments in the Iskandar Malaysia region.

DutchCham and MDBC took the op- portunity to see the developments and meet the key players at the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC).

Also a visit to the Netherlands Mari- time Institute of Technology (NMIT) was on the agenda of the second day. As a Malaysian Dutch private higher learning institution, NMIT were hon- ored to welcome the delegates to the institute.

Mr Berkvens, CEO of Damen Shipyards, Mr René H. Berkvens, CEO Damen Shipyards group travelled to Singapore to attend IMDEX, the Asian Defence Exhibition and made time available to talk at a the Dutch- Cham breakfast event. He presented an insight into the strategy of this Dutch shipbuilding group navigating through the developments of globalization. Delegates in the audience were Dutch maritime representatives, local maritime representatives and academics of NUS.

The Lunch and Learn session in June consolidated some practi- cal advice on contract drafting. Tips were shared on provisions in a contract, penalty clauses, constraints and add-on tasks but also advice was given on mutual dignity, legal rights in times of a conflict and flexibility.

The CEO and deputy CEO of the recently launched Singa- pore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) and the Singa- pore International Commercial Court (SICC) were keynote speakers at this DutchCham breakfast event. Attracted by the strong economic growth and high trade inflows and outflows in ASEAN and Asia, many international companies are operating within the region and beyond. However, when disputes arise in international business, unfamiliarity with lo- cal legal systems and cultures may pose challenges to a quick and cost-effective resolution of disputes. Answers were given on international arbitration and mediation, when to use it, when to use a combination of both and current trends.
