Meet the Team MEET THE TEAM Ivo Diaz Owner Venezuelan born, New York City bred, mixologist, consultant and restaurateur. Ivo has worked over sixteen years curating restaurant and cocktail programs including The Nomad Hotel, Eleven Madison Park, and One Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. Luis Herrera Executive Chef Chef Luis specializes in Venezuelan and Mexican cuisine. Luis has worked at restaurants such as Chef Carlos Garcia's Alto Restaurant, claiming the title “Best Restaurant in Venezuela.” In New York City as Cosme with award winning Mexican Chef Enrique Olvera., Ora Who's Ora? Ivo and Rachel’s 1-year-old daughter. She's always around to say "hola." INTRODUCCIÓN SOBRE EL POR QUÉ DE ESTE TRABAJO Con más de cincuenta años de espera, se completa un trabajo que se inició cuando tuve la oportunidad de celebrar las primeras fiestas de la Navidad en Venezuela, concretamente en la parroquia de El Carmelo, Estado Zulia, a orillas el Lago de Maracaibo, en 1956. Me sorprendió la costumbre, que había de las misas de aguinaldo o de aguinaldos, como allí se decía, a partir del día 16 de diciembre, antes del amanecer. Acudían muchos fieles, algunos con caminatas de más de 8 km. Lo hacían muy contentos, en grupos, cantando villancicos o “aguinaldos”.

    Chaplain Stories & News Building Bridges—Parishes, Pastors, Prisons January 12, 2017 — Bishop Myron Cotta, Diocese of Sacramento, (at right in photo) took another important step to building a more effective and robust ministry to the incarcerated on Thursday, January 12. He had invited the seven State Prison Chaplains to meet with the pastors and key lay men and women from the parishes closest to the prisons. The meeting was facilitated by Deacon Clyde Davis, a former Prison Chaplain. Clyde has been hired by the California Bishops’ Conference to provide a range of supports for Catholic Chaplains throughout the state. During the meeting, Deacon Clyde said that one of the major problems faced by Prison Chaplains is a sense of isolation and a lack of support from the local parishes. The Sacramento Diocese and Bishop Cotta is seeking to build bridges from local parishes to the Chaplains and the prisons. He asked that each parish assign a “Prison Champion” to serve as a consistent connecting point between the parish and the chaplain. Many creative ideas were shared about how the parishes and the nearby prisons would both benefit from a closer relationship. Chaplin Smolinisky Reflects on a Tamale Christmas at Pelican Bay December 2016 — The first time I did a Christmas celebration with tamales and champurrado in jail or a prison setting, I was a volunteer at Mira Loma, an immigration detention center for Homeland Security. Imelda, another volunteer, brought tamales and champurrado. I thought this was a crazy idea at first, and I saw the hesitation of the Sherriff. When I came to Pelican Bay State Prison, I remember the interview question from the panel, “What makes men attracted to come to your services?” I responded, “Food! Jesus Christ teaches us to gather and eat and drink and when you do this, He is there.” “I haven’t had a homemade tamale in 25 years,” said Jose who had been in the SHU, or isolation unit, for almost two decades.

It contrasts soups with classic European roots, such as sopa de pan (bread soup), with New World soups, such as sopa de tortilla (tortilla soup) and chilaquiles (toasted tortillas in a soupy sauce made from chiles). I adopt a multi-disciplinary approach, combining quantitative methods in the digital humanities with qualitative techniques in history and literature. To produce this analysis, I draw from Pierre Bourdieu’s work on distinction and social capital, Max Weber’s ideas about modernization and rationalization, and Charles Tilly’s notions of categorical inequality. Results demonstrate that soup plays a part in a complex drama of inclusion and exclusion as people socially construct themselves in print and culinary practice. Elites attempted to define respectable soups by what ingredients they used, and how they prepared, served, and consumed soup. Box 1883, Tamale Ghana 2Tamale Teaching Hospital, Tamale Ghana Abstract Food safety amongst street food vendors is becoming a major public concern especially in urban areas of the developing world where this industry is expanding rapidly. There is rarely any information on street food safety issues in rural northern Ghana where this industry is equally growing rapidly. We therefore conducted this study to assess the knowledge level and evaluate food safety and hygiene practices amongst street food vendors in a rural district of northern Ghana. A cross sectional study was carried out in the Nadowli district where 200 street food vendors were randomly selected from of both densely and none densely populated areas of food vendors. Knowledge level amongst vendors concerning food safety practices was 100%. Although over 96% washed their hands after some major activities, about 13% of them did not use soap. The main storage forms of leftover foods were consumption by friends and family members (13%), reheating (13%) and refrigeration (11.5%). Water storage containers were also found to be used for other activities. 71% of the vendors had undergone medical screening despite a high knowledge level (100%) of its importance. Street food vendors in this rural northern setting generally have a high knowledge level on food safety issues but however do not translate this knowledge into practice.
