Carole@spidernet. com. cy The earliest agro-pastoralists of the Near East are generally held to have emerged in a narrow Levantine Corridor. Agricultural life initially spread from this discrete core zone in the Early Pre- Pottery Neolithic B to adjacent inland regions, only reaching the Mediterranean coast of Syria by the Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B. Recent discoveries on Cyprus, far to the west of the core zone, prompt re-configuration of several elements of this model. They also provide evidence for characteristics of a regional variant of the PPNB and, in a broader context, fresh data for an understanding of the triggers and mechanics of precocious neolithic dispersals. In a flurry of recent reviews of evidence for the tran- Cauvin (1989; 1997) has suggested a stadial sition from foraging to agricultural societies in the model for this dispersal. The course of the first one is used as a general analogy to study the second, and the older one. This approach puts aside the issue of biological differences among the human fossils, and concentrates solely on the cultural and technological innovations. It also demonstrates that issues that are common- place to the study of the trajisition from foraging to cultivation and animal husbandry can be employed as an overarching model for the study of the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The advantage of this approach is that it focuses on the core areas where each of these revolutions began, the ensuing dispersals and their geographic contexts.

    The Fertile Crescent and the Neolithic Expansion 9500 BC – 5800 BC The Last Hunter Gatherers in the Iberian Peninsula The dramatic effects of the oscillations and general improvement of the climate after the Younger Dryas (about 9500 BC) can be seen in the wider Mediterranean, which is where we now go to look at a development that would change the way of life of the whole of Europe. Whilst the human populations of Andalucia wobbled around a non-sustainable level, populations elsewhere were burgeoning to such an extent that they flowed over and out of the land they originally occupied. First a quick tour of the Mediterranean to look at what was afoot elsewhere. In the Levant, to which we will return shortly, rainfall increased to about 20% above current levels. More importantly the rains fell evenly throughout the year, raising water tables, bringing springs to life and feeding streams and rivers. In the northern Mediterranean and temperate Europe, a chaotic succession of plants, trees and attendant animals eventually settled down in many areas to large tracts of mixed oak forest with conifers in the mountains and open scrub on the thinner, poorer, limestone soils. In the drier parts of the Aegean and, as we have seen, the Iberian Peninsula, tree cover was patchier. There were large areas of prickly scrub and tracts of savannah dotted with almond, pistachio and terebinth. In climatic enclaves the shrubs we consider typically Mediterranean, the woody, fragrant herbs, together with olives and other, evergreen, trees kept their heads down and survived. In southern Anatolia and parts of the Levant, the woodland was, uncharacteristically, slow to advance, compared to areas at similar latitudes that were settled with a stable ecological system.

The analyses are based on a database of c. 7500 records of plant taxa from 250 sites dated to the early Neo- lithic of the region in which they occur, aggregated into a number of regional groups. The analysis demonstrates that a phylogenetic signal exists in the data but it is complicated by the fact that in comparison with the changes that occurred when the crop agriculture complex expanded out of the Near East, once it arrived in Europe it underwent only limited further changes. On the basis of the analysis it has been possible to identify the species losses and gains that occurred as the complex of crops and associated weeds spread and to show the influence of geographical location and cultural affinity on the pattern of losses and gains.

    NEOLITHIC PERIOD, NORTH-WESTERN SAUDI ARABIA Khalid Fayez AlAsmari PhD UNIVERSITY OF YORK ARCHAEOLOGY SEPTEMBER 2019 Abstract During the past four decades, the Neolithic period in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) had received little academic study, until recently. This was due to the previous widely held belief that the Arabian Peninsula had no sites dating back to this time period, as well as few local researchers and the scarcity of foreign research teams. The decline in this belief over the past years, however, has led to the realisation of the importance of the Neolithic in this geographical part of the world for understanding the development and spread of early farming. As well as gaining a better understanding of the cultural attribution of the Neolithic in KSA, filling the chronological gaps in this historical era in KSA is vital, as it is not well understood compared to many neighbouring areas. To address this gap in knowledge, this thesis aims to consider whether the Northwest region of KSA was an extension of the Neolithic developments in the Levant or an independent culture, through presenting the excavation of the Neolithic site of AlUyaynah. Despite surveys and studies that have been conducted in the KSA, this study is the first of its kind, because the site "AlUyaynah", which is the focus of this dissertation, is the first excavation of a site dating back to the pre-pottery Neolithic (PPN). Therefore, the importance of this study lies in developing an understanding of Neolithic characteristics in the North-Western part of the KSA. Initially, the site was surveyed and then three trenches were excavated to study the remaining levels of occupation.

  • The Archaeology of Cyprus Has Always Been Somewhat of an Enigma
    Andrew Waters 12/15/12 The Divergent Development of Cyprus in the Early Aceramic Neolithic The archaeology of Cyprus has always been somewhat of an enigma. The excavation of Khirokitia-Vouni (commonly called Khirokitia) in the 1950’s revealed a Neolithic culture lacking cattle, pottery, and rectilinear architecture—in sharp contrast to contemporary mainland cultures and seemingly developed in isolation. From this so- called Khirokitia Culture (c. 7000 BCE) through the Ceramic Neolithic and Chalcolithic (end 3rd mil. BCE), Cyprus displays a largely homogenous material culture that, although belatedly adopting pottery, remained isolated from mainland culture; with a continued preference for circular architecture, a mixed hunting-farming subsistence strategy, and a unique emphasis on stone vessels and figurines. This has led many to categorize Cyprus as a culturally and technologically impoverished offshoot of mainland Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) culture. Indeed, Cyprus has fallen prey to what Paul Rainbird describes as a biased view of islands in western thought, which sees them as inherently isolated, and their inhabitants suffering from this isolation; however, statements about Cyprus’ inferiority wrongly assume a unilinear social evolution and do not take into account the Cypriot point of view.1 The more recent discovery of both a PPNA and PPNB culture on Cyprus allows for a new window into the development of Cyprus, one that takes Cypriot agency and choice into consideration, and moves beyond simple functionalist statements regarding the insularity of Cyprus. The insular, and idiosyncratic culture of Cyprus can clearly be seen in the Khirokitia Culture, but its roots lie earlier in the Aceramic Neolithic.

    Chapter One Greek Environment and Prehistory GREEK ENVIRONMENT AND PREHISTORY Greece in prehistory lay on the peripheries of the wider Mediterranean world, and it was slow to enter fully into that world. Formed by the Pindus mountain range, which extends from the European continent toward the southeast until it is submerged in the Aegean Sea, Greece has a jagged coastline, making access to the sea difficult in some places. The land was broken by mountains, and many of the plains are so small that they can support only a single settlement. Even where land exists, much of it is rocky and poor. Rivers are small and usually dry up in the summer, making agriculture dependent upon rainfall and offering no prospects for the large-scale irrigation projects made possible by the annual flooding of the rivers of the Fertile Crescent. No large, unified state that commanded large numbers of workers could arise under these conditions. But 72 percent of Greek land is within 25 miles of the sea, and access to the sea was a crucial element from the earliest period of Greek history. Out of Africa Africa is widely considered to have been the original homeland of humans or their hominin ancestors. This has been supported most recently by a theory of the development of human languages, in which language in the original place of origin was marked by high phonemic diversity and decreased with increasing distance from the point of origin. Human lan- guages do display such a pattern of decreasing diversity in accordance with their distance from Africa, which is thus suggested to have been their origin.1 The traditional view is that over the course of millennia people wandered out from Africa, following a land route along the Levantine Corridor and eventually reaching the area of the upper Tigris and Euphrates Rivers (the “Hilly Flanks”) in which rain-fed culti- vation was possible.
