Rundt 1870 finner vi andre dampskip i trafikk i Bundefjorden. Denne gang var det skruedamp skipet "PALLAS" tilhørende Christiania-Oslo D/S som besørget en rute innover fjorden. Heller ikke for dette selskap ble det noen lang og lysende karriere, selskapet gikk kon kurs etter 10 års drift i 1876. A/S BUNDEFJORD DAMPSKIBSSELSKAB 1875-1908 Våren 1874 ble det dannet et interessentskap med formål å drive frakt- og passas jerrute mellom Oslo og Bundefjordens øst- og vestside. Den 16.april 1874 møttes fire herrer av de mest formuende eiendomsbesittere rundt Bunde fjorden og dannet et interessentskap. Det første man gjorde var å kjøpe en hjulbåt fra P.L. Henderson i Granston, England. Skipet ble etter endel ombygging ved Nylands Verksted, satt i fart med navnet "BUNDEFJORD". Introduction: Systems Crisis The question we pose, although cannot yet answer with certainty, is whether the current set of crises in fisheries--- from the salmon of the West Coast of North America to the groundfish of the East Coast of North America--will open the door to institutional- cultural, social, political- change. There are theoretical and logical grounds for thinking that crisis and institutional change might be linked (Holling 1986; Kuhn 1962, 1970) although the nature and outcomes of linkages are not so straightforward (Lee 1993). Fisheries management is a thoroughly modernist venture, imbued as are so many other of the applied "natural resource" areas with a very pragmatic, utilitarian, science- dependent, and mostly optimistic perspective on the ability of people to "manage" wild things and processes. Management decisions-such as quotas, the timing or length of a fishing season, and the kinds of fishing gear allowed-are influenced by many things but are in theory dependent on information and understandings from a probabilistic but deterministic science known as "stock assessment." However, the alarming occurrence of fish stock declines and collapses throughout the world is accompanied by critical appraisals of the specific tools and the more general philosophies of fisheries management.

    "She's Gone, Boys": Vernacular Song Responses to the Atlantic Fisheries Crisis Peter Narváez Abstract: In July 1992 a moratorium on the commercial fishing of cod, the staple of the North Atlantic fisheries, urns enacted by the Government of Canada. Because of the continued decline in fish stocks, the moratorium has been maintained, and fishing for domestic personal consumption has also been prohibited. Various compensation programs have not atoned for the demise of what is regarded as a “way of life." Responding to the crisis, vernacular verse, mostly in song form from Newfoundland, reflects the inadequacies of such programs. In addition, these creations assign causes and solutions while revealing a common usage of musical style, language and signifiers which combine to affirm an allegiance to traditional collective values of family, community and province through nostalgic experience. Some of the versifiers have turned to the craft for the first time during this disaster because they view songs and recitations as appropriate vehicles for social commentary. Paul Dittmann, 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School Since the Second World War, Canada‟s armed forces have often represented the most prominent federal organization in the occupation and use of the Canadian Arctic. Economic development in the region came in fits and starts, hindered by remoteness and the lack of any long-term industry base. Today the Arctic‟s resource potential, fuelled by innovative technological advances, has fed to demands for infrastructure development. New opportunities in Canada‟s Arctic have, in turn, influenced a growing young population and their need for increased social development. Simultaneously, the fragile environment becomes a global focal point as the realities of climate change are increasingly accepted, diplomatically drawing together circumpolar nations attempting to address common issues. A unipolar world order developed with the geopolitical imbalance caused by the fall of the Soviet Union. This left the world‟s sole superpower, the United States (US), and its allies facing increased regional power struggles, international terrorism, and trans-national crime. Given the combination of tremendous growth in the developing world, its appetite for commodities, and the accessibility to resource-rich polar regions facilitated by climate change, Canada faces security and sovereignty issues that are both remnants of the Cold War era and newly emerging. The response to these challenges has been a resurgence of military initiatives to empower Canadian security and sovereignty in the region. TIRODUCTION During the 1980s, a new star emerged in seafood markets and restaurants across the world. Driven by advanced technology and overfishing of shallow- dwelling fish, commercial fishers in search of deeper-dwelling, marketable species' discovered a relatively small, deep-ocean fish off the coast of New Zealand.2 Brightly colored in orange and unusually ugly as fish go, this "new" species was the orange roughy.3 Its taste was marvelous, it was low in cholesterol, and easily adapted to nearly any pallet.4 Huge numbers were harvested and shipped to markets around the globe.5 But then something happened that many failed to imagine during the prosperity provided by the 6 orange roughy boom: commercial catches dramatically decreased. In short, orange roughy abundance decreased because very little was known about their life stages.7 Fisheries scientists later determined that they are long-lived fish, often living as long as 120-150 years.8 Orange roughy do I See Christopher C.     ANNOTATED SUPPLEMENT TO THE COMMANDER’S HANDBOOK ON THE LAW OF NAVAL OPERATIONS NEWPORT, RI 1997 15 NOV 1997 INTRODUCTORY NOTE The Commander’s Handbook on the Law of Naval Operations (NWP 1-14M/MCWP S-2.1/ COMDTPUB P5800.1), formerly NWP 9 (Rev. A)/FMFM l-10, was promulgated to U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard activities in October 1995. The Com- mander’s Handbook contains no reference to sources of authority for statements of relevant law. This approach was deliberately taken for ease of reading by its intended audience-the operational commander and his staff. This Annotated Supplement to the Handbook has been prepared by the Oceans Law and Policy Department, Center for Naval Warfare Studies, Naval War College to support the academic and research programs within the College. Although prepared with the assistance of cognizant offices of the General Counsel of the Department of Defense, the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, The Judge Advocate General of the Army, The Judge Advocate General of the Air Force, the Staff Judge Advo- cate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Chief Counsel of the Coast Guard, the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Unified Combatant Commands, the annotations in this Annotated Supplement are not to be construed as representing official policy or positions of the Department of the Navy or the U.S. Governrnent. The text of the Commander’s Handbook is set forth verbatim. Annotations appear as footnotes numbered consecutively within each Chapter. Supplementary Annexes, Figures and Tables are prefixed by the letter “A” and incorporated into each Chapter.

Two hundred guests from Denmark, England, Ireland, Faroe, Norway, Scotland, Shetland and Spain attended the launching ceremony in Spain. Adenia was named in the traditional manner by the skipper’s wife, Ruby Anderson, before their granddaughters, Faye, Lori and Mollie, smashed a further three bottles for good luck. Featuring a beam of 15.6m and 10 RSW tanks, Adenia was designed by Karl Sandvik of Salt Ship Design, a longtime friend of the owners, who also project- managed the new build. Adenia is expected to arrive at Shetland later this month, in time for the North Sea herring fishery. Michel Kaiser. Adenia is named in the A leading marine scientist from traditional manner by Ruby Heriot-Watt University has joined Anderson. the board of Fisheries Innovation Scotland (FIS). Michel Kaiser, who is well- known in the fishing industry, is a professor of fisheries conservation at the university, and will sit as one of nine trustees to help shape the objectives of FIS. This will include key discussions around how best to capture and share fishing data, the use of ‘intelligent’ Adenia berthed at Bilbao for the naming ceremony.
