Not a chance – it’s time for a major new focus! 48 Bill Clinton – Decide to live a healthier life www.heartacademy.org CV Network – Vol. 15 No. 1 – February 2016 1 Special Recognition for Ivan Berkowitz MBA t a reception held in Winnipeg in February, 2016, the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences Ahas recognized Ivan Berkowitz with “Distinguished Service Award in Cardiovascular Science, Medicine and Surgery”. In his capacity as Editor of CV Network and Heart Health Scholar of the Academy for more than 15 years, Ivan has played a critical role in the development of cardiovascular health programs throughout the world. He served as conference coordinator for 11 national and international meetings and symposia held in Winnipeg for exchanging information on cardiovascular health and disease. In addition, he organized several public forums in Winnipeg and paid particular attention to lifestyle modifications and nutritional approaches for the preven- tion of heart disease. He edited a book “Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health” published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, 2003. He has also been serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiovascular Translational Research. The work of Ivan Berkowitz was recognized by several awards from different organiza- tions. He received Medal of Merit from SERVCOR, Brazil and was bestowed the title “Honourary Professor Ivan Berkowitz MBA of Fundaco Cardiovascular Sao Francisco de Assis” Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He was granted Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2009 Reh-Fit Foundation Healthy Living Award, and Big Heart Award for Organizational Achievement by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. He has been serving as President of Myles Robinson Memorial Heart Trust for the past 9 years. Indeed, Ivan has rendered invaluable services in promoting the mission of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences and thus all the Officers and Members of the Executive Council extend their best wishes for his future endeavors. Pour une première fois dans l’histoire de l’émission, la finale était 100% féminine et l’aventure de Cahill s’est terminée le 18 octobre. Malgré le soutien de la population, l’artiste locale n’a finalement pas pu remporter la dernière étape de la compétition. L’émission lui a donné la chance de travailler aux côtés de talentueux artistes, de Ginette Reno à Tyler Shaw, sans bien sûr oublier qu’elle a pu tout au long de l’aventure compter sur les conseils de son coach, Marc Dupré. Cette expérience lui aura aussi permis de se retrouver sur l’album La Voix chante. Pour Mme Cahill, La Voix était l’occasion de prouver à ses filles qu’il n’est jamais trop tard pour accomplir ses rêves.

    The Newsletter of the Manitoba Guild of English Ringers' Roundtable Handbell Ringers Ringers' Roundtable Volume 23 Issue 2 January 2019 NEW YEAR’S LEVEE AT THE MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE BUILDING Manitoba’s first Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Adams Archibald, hosted his first New Year’s Levee on January 2, 1871 at Upper Fort Garry, where he established his residence. Construction of Government House at 10 Kennedy Street was completed in the fall of 1883 and the first New Year’s Levee was held there in 1884, hosted by Manitoba’s fourth Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable James Aikins.* [New year’s Day Levee History printed on the 2019 Levee program] In more recent years, the annual New Year’s Day Levee, is hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba at the Manitoba Legislative Building and the public is invited to greet the Lieutenant Governor and partake in refreshments and entertainment. Complimentary sleigh rides were available on the Legislative Grounds, and a magician entertained in the Rotunda. Members of the Manitoba Living History Society and members of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association appeared wearing their period costumes adding to the authenticity of this old tradition. Members of the Scouts and Guides assisted with the serving of refreshments. This year, The Honourable Janice C. Filmon and The Honourable Gary A. Filmon greeted many members of the public while the Winnipeg Police Service Choir and The Winnipeg Boys Choir entertained atop the Grand Staircase and the Ring Out Handbell Quartet performed for 40 minutes on the third floor balcony. L. Kirby was the chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology when it released The Health of Canadians, a major study on the state of health care in Canada in October 2002. Senator Kirby has a B.Sc. and an M.A. in mathematics from Dalhousie University. In 1965, he received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Northwestern University. Senator Kirby was principal assistant to the premier of Nova Scotia from 1970 to 1973 and served as assistant principal secretary to the prime minister from 1974 to 1976. From 1980 to 1982, Senator Kirby was secretary to the Cabinet for federal- provincial relations and deputy clerk of the Privy Council. In this capacity, he was deeply involved in the negotiations that led to the patriation of the Canadian Constitution and the inclusion of the Charter of Rights in the Constitution. Senator Kirby is a recognized national expert on public policy issues. He served as an advisor to several governments and has held or holds senior directorships on some of Canada’s leading corporate boards. Since his appointment to the Senate in 1984, he has led a number of important inquiries into the banking industry and, more recently, the health care system. The speculations on the way in which carbohydrate was built from carbon dioxide began not long after the recognition of the basic reaction and were carried forward first by Justus von Liebig and then by Adolf von Baeyer and, finally, by Richard Willstätter and Arthur Stall into this century. Actually, the route by which animal organisms performed the reverse reaction, that is, the combustion of carbohydrate to carbon dioxide and water with the utili- zation of the energy resulting from this combination, turned out to be the first one to be successfully mapped, primarily by Otto Meyerhof 2 and Hans Krebs 3. Our own interest in the basic process of solar energy conversion by green plants, which is represented by the overall reaction began some time in the years between 1935 and 1937, during my post- doctoral studies with Professor Michael Polanyi at Manchester. It was there I first became conscious of the remarkable properties of coordinated metal compounds, particularly metalloporphyrins as represented by heme and chlorophyll.

This project combines the strengths of the existing UCSF Biotechnology Archives and the UCB Program in the History of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and will contribute to an overall picture of the growth and impact of biotechnology in the Bay Area.
