    The Newsletter of the Manitoba Guild of English Ringers' Roundtable Handbell Ringers Ringers' Roundtable Volume 23 Issue 2 January 2019 NEW YEAR’S LEVEE AT THE MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE BUILDING Manitoba’s first Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Adams Archibald, hosted his first New Year’s Levee on January 2, 1871 at Upper Fort Garry, where he established his residence. Construction of Government House at 10 Kennedy Street was completed in the fall of 1883 and the first New Year’s Levee was held there in 1884, hosted by Manitoba’s fourth Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable James Aikins.* [New year’s Day Levee History printed on the 2019 Levee program] In more recent years, the annual New Year’s Day Levee, is hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba at the Manitoba Legislative Building and the public is invited to greet the Lieutenant Governor and partake in refreshments and entertainment. Complimentary sleigh rides were available on the Legislative Grounds, and a magician entertained in the Rotunda. Members of the Manitoba Living History Society and members of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association appeared wearing their period costumes adding to the authenticity of this old tradition. Members of the Scouts and Guides assisted with the serving of refreshments. This year, The Honourable Janice C. Filmon and The Honourable Gary A. Filmon greeted many members of the public while the Winnipeg Police Service Choir and The Winnipeg Boys Choir entertained atop the Grand Staircase and the Ring Out Handbell Quartet performed for 40 minutes on the third floor balcony. Also, there is a cool group of people associated with the The Producer Fringe, and I’m pretty boring day to day,” she smiles. Grace was an English major but admits drama classes didn’t pique her interest. So how did she end up with theatre as “a side gig that takes up more time than my actual paid work”? Five years back, ACT PEI put on “plays in a day”: writers had 12 hours to write a play; directors had 12 hours to produce it. Grace signed up to the open call for performers. “It was so fun,” Grace recalls. When ACT later called for people to get into the production side of theatre, Grace signed up again, and has been producing theatre ever since. She is now also on the ACT board as director of the - atre, helping to recruit shows. And, independent of ACT, she produces shows herself. In February, the show is Raised on TV 3 , the third iteration of a sketch comedy show conceived by Grace’s friend Rod Weatherbie, inspired by television.

    LUKE McMASTER BIO Icons of Soul, Luke McMaster’s ambitious new project, offers a refreshing twist. For not only is Brandon, Manitoba-born purveyor of contemporary blue-eyed soul paying tribute to classic R&B songwriting legends on his upcoming fourth album: he’s recruiting them. “I’m collaborating with legends like Lamont Dozier and Felix Cavaliere on some new originals,” says McMaster, the Toronto- based singer, songwriter and producer best known for “Good Morning, Beautiful,” his 2013 Top 3 Billboard AC smash with new age pianist Jim Brickman. “And what’s especially cool about this project is that they’re still hungry: as much as I’m learning from these masters who wrote unforgettable hits that have formed the soulful soundtrack of my life, they’re equally excited to work with me and my songwriting partner Arun Chaturvedi to write something fresh.” Aside from covering some of the classic immortal chart-toppers written by Rascals founder Cavaliere (“Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “People Got to Be Free”) and Motown sensation Dozier of Holland/Dozier/Holland (“(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave,” “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” “You Can’t Hurry Love”) - both members of the Rock ‘N Roll and Songwriter Halls of Fame - McMaster co-wrote two songs apiece with the prodigies at their respective Nashville and Las Vegas homes, capturing the occasions on camera for a corresponding Icons of Soul TV documentary series. “Lamont told me this great story about his inspiration for ‘I Can’t Help Myself,’” McMaster recalls. “It turns out his grandmother owned a beauty shop and his grandfather would be hitting on all the ladies, saying things like, ‘Hello, Sugar Pie;’ ‘How you doin’, Honey Bunch?’ When Brian and Eddie Holland asked him for some ideas for the song, he remembered his grandfather’s flirting and the rest is history.

This being the first day of the meeting of the Second Session of the Thirty-Seventh Legislature of the Province of Manitoba convoked by Proclamation of His Honour Peter LIBA, Lieutenant Governor for the dispatch of business, and the Members of the House being assembled, His Honour Peter LIBA, was pleased to open the session with the following gracious speech: Mister Speaker and Members of the Manitoba Legislature: Welcome to the second session of the thirty-seventh Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba. Since the election of a year ago my Ministers have been working in partnership with Manitoba citizens to keep the commitments which form the government's mandate: To restore public health care in all regions of our province; To provide new hope for young people through opportunities in education; To make our communities safer; To reduce property taxes through increased tax credits; and To maintain and improve the balanced budget law. My Ministers have made solid progress on these commitments and believe they will make a great deal more in the coming year. Your government recognizes that it must continue to concentrate on Manitoba's immediate priorities and must do so within limited budgetary resources. Our province, like most of the others across Canada, faces cost pressures in health, education and other priority services delivered by government. That is why the new health financing agreement which was worked out by First Ministers in September, following a very successful Premiers' Conference here in Winnipeg in August, was important.

View full article and comments here http://thetyee.ca/Mediacheck/2007/11/13/ToriedLove/ By Marc Edge Published: November 13, 2007 TheTyee.ca [Editor's note: This is the first of four excerpts from Marc Edge's new book Asper Nation: Canada's Most Dangerous Media Company.] Its final report on the news media in Canada was not released by the Standing Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications until June of 2006. It had been more than three years since the study was conceived. It had been disbanded twice while Parliament was dissolved for federal elections. In the end, the Senate report was released by a new committee chair, Lise Bacon, as the term of Senator Joan Fraser had expired. The political landscape onto which the report landed had also been radically altered by the federal election earlier that year. After more than a dozen years of Liberal rule, a minority Conservative government came to power that February under Stephen Harper. A deregulationist regime in Ottawa meant that any prescription the senators might have had for legislative reform of Canada's news media ownership had little hope of being adopted. Perhaps that was why they proposed such modest measures to curb the growing power of Canada's media giants. The likelihood of any limits on media ownership being enacted by the new ruling party in Ottawa also grew scant for another reason. The Asper heirs had moved almost as close to the Conservatives as their father had been to the Liberal party.
