  • Anglican Archives in Rupert's Land by WILMA MACDONALD
Anglican Archives in Rupert's Land by WILMA MACDONALD Until 1870 the vast area which is now northern Quebec and Ontario, the prairies, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and portions of British Columbia was known as Rupert's Land. Prince Rupert, with sixteen associates, who were incorporated by Letters Patent as the Honourable the Hudson's Bay Company, was granted this vast territory in 1670 by King Charles 11. The new trading company acquired a region extending over 2,700,000 square miles. To protect its lucrative and increasing fur trade, the company successfully resisted attempts to colonize the territory. No effort was made to minister to the few Christian people in the widely scattered forts of the Hudson's Bay Company or to evangelize the native peoples until the early nineteenth century. In 1820, some six years after the tenacious Orkney Islanders established an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Red River, guided there by the Earl of Selkirk, the company sent out an Anglican chaplain, the Reverend John West (1778-1846). Although West was appointed to minister to the company's officers and servants, he also looked after the needs of the small Scottish colony and took great interest in the Indians. He established a school in the Red River settlement on a lot of land set apart for church purposes by thecompany (on which the Cathedral Church of St. John now stands in Winnipeg). West's efforts laid the foundations for missionary work and also marked the beginning of formal education in Manitoba. The small school he began in 1820 was followed by the Red River Academy, founded by John Macallurn and revived by Bishop David Anderson.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE LITVAK? THE LEGACY OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA © Antony Polonsky 266 By the end of the nineteenth century, the concept of the „Litvak" had become well- established in the Jewish world. Let me give a few literary examples. I will begin with two by non-Litvaks. In one of his „hasidic tales", „Tsvishn tsvay berg" (Be- tween Two Mountains), Yitshak Leibush Peretz describes the conflict between the hasidim and their mitnagdic opponents. He gives both sides their voice but clearly comes down on the side of the former. The story recounts the clash between the Brisker rov and his best pupil, who has left him to found a hasidic court. He ex- plains why: Your Torah, Rabbi, is nothing but law. It is without pity. Your Torah contains not a spark of compas- sion. And that is why it is without joy, without air to breathe. It is nothing but steel and iron-iron commandments, copper laws. It is a very refined Torah, suitable for scholars, for the select few. The Brisker rov was silent, so the rebbe continued: „Tell me, Rabbi, what have you got for ordinary people? For the woodchopper, the butcher, the tradesman, the simple man? And, most especially for the sinful man? What do you have to offer those who are not scholars?...". To convince the Brisker rov, the Bialer rebbe takes him to see his followers on Simkhat torah when they are transformed by the festival. This does not convince the Brisker rov. „We must say the afternoon prayer," the Brisker rov suddenly announced in his harsh voice-and eve- rything vanished.

  • CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE CANADIAN MUSIC SINCE 1940: a QUESTION of NATIONALISM a Thesis Submitted in Partial Satis
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE CANADIAN MUSIC SINCE 1940: A QUESTION OF NATIONALISM A Thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music by Ronald Frederick Erin August, 1983 J:lhe Thesis of Ronald Frederick Erin is approved: California StD. te Universi tJr, Northridge ii PREFACE This thesis represents a survey of Canadian music since 1940 within the conceptual framework of 'nationalism'. By this selec- tive approach, it does not represent a conclusive view of Canadian music nor does this paper wish to ascribe national priorities more importance than is due. However, Canada has a unique relationship to the question of nationalism. All the arts, including music, have shared in the convolutions of national identity. The rela- tionship between music and nationalism takes on great significance in a country that has claimed cultural independence only in the last 40 years. Therefore, witnessed by Canadian critical res- ponse, the question of national identity in music has become an important factor. \ In utilizing a national focus, I have attempted to give a progressive, accumulative direction to the six chapters covered in this discussion. At the same time, I have attempted to make each chapter self-contained, in order to increase the paper's effective- ness as a reference tool. If the reader wishes to refer back to information on the CBC's CRI-SM record label or the Canadian League of Composers, this informati6n will be found in Chapter IV. Simi- larly, work employing Indian texts will be found in Chapter V. Therefore, a certain amount of redundancy is unavoidable when interconnecting various components.

  • Season IV: 1975-1976
Season IV: Jets Capture First Crown Tardif & Cloutier Scoring Stars 1975-1976 Fighting Mars League Image The World Hockey Association opened its fourth season with high hopes after Award Winners three previous seasons of steadily increasing attendance figures. Two teams would not be back for the 1975-76 campaign: the Chicago Cougars folded immediately after the previous season’s end, and the Baltimore Blades ceased operations not long after. In their places were two expansion franchises: the Cincinnati Stingers and the Denver Spurs. There was just one franchise shift: the Vancouver Blazers moved across the Rockies to Calgary, becoming the Cowboys. The fourteen teams were divided into three divisions. Calgary, Edmonton, Québec, Toronto and Winnipeg made up the Canadian Division; Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis and New England comprised the Eastern Division, Most Valuable Player Rookie of the Year Gordie Howe Trophy Lou Kaplan Trophy while the Western Division included Denver, Houston, Minnesota, Phoenix and Marc Tardif Mark Napier San Diego. Québec Toronto Denver’s Spurs could not make it to the new year; they vacated Denver at the end of December, played two home games in Ottawa in early January 1976, and disbanded altogether two weeks later. It is a testament to Gould’s genius that he could record the same piece of music twice—so differently, yet each version brilliant in its own way. Glenn Gould— A State Of Wonder brings together both of Gould’s legendary performances of The Goldberg Variations for the first time in a deluxe, digitally remastered, 3-CD set. Sony Classical celebrates the 70th anniversary of Glenn Gould's birth with a collection of limited edition CDs. This beautifully packaged collection contains the cornerstones of Gould’s career that marked him as a genius of our time. A supreme intrepreter of Bach, these recordings are an essential addition to every music collection.
