Bill Appleton reported that Lex Moodie, our former member who is now tetraplegic due to a car accident, had a successful hand operation recently which has given him some more use of his thumbs. This has given Lex a lot of hope. 4. Bill Grayson confirmed that he, Neil Reid and the District Governor will visit Kaitaia next week to do some more research on the propose project up there for the Club in the coming year. Five Minute Speaker was Quentin Jay • Quentin talked about Panuku, the property arm of the Auckland Council. He had a meeting with a representative from there recently about what Panuku is Planning or working on for the area. Some of it appears to be exciting and others things haven’t changed since 2017. • Onehunga is regarded by Panuku as a vibrant place and any work there is intended to build on its special character. Planning includes more density in the town centre, including more high density housing and establishing a connection to the wharf area from the lower end of the shopping part of The Mall. • Goals for Panuku for Onehunga are as follows: • To build on its existing strengths; • To do what the community wants; • To make strategic purchases in the area to help achieve (a) and (b); • Look at expanding Dress Mart with an opening into The Mall itself; • Relocate the bus station closer to the railway station; • Onehunga wharf. The NZTA sees this area as a “great connector”. In Quenton’s view this is a terrible idea and would make it difficult to do anything appealing in that area; • There is still a wish to push for locating the overhead power lines underground; and • There is also a Laneways project for the centre of the town Page 2 of 3 Bulletin Editor: Peter Grace Mobile: 021 127 3612 Email: [email protected] Web Page https://www.rotaryonehungaonetreehill.co.nz Our Guest Speaker tonight was Val Payne • Val has been a resident of Mangere and Mangere Bridge for at least 50 years. For 20 years she and her husband ran the florist shop in Coronation Road at Mangere Bridge. She is the secretary of the Mangere Historical Society, on the Methodist Church Board and a life member of the Mangere Soccer Club. • Val has written four books about the area. In her life and her business she has picked up a lot of information about various parts of the district. Val said that one of her father’s sayings was “Know a man who Knows a man”. In practice she said this is how she got to know more about the locality. • She then concentrated on the Favona District which originally comprised farmlands and then gradually changed its character as it became intensely settled. Part of her book called Favona has a chapter about the number of different churches that exist in the area, several of them with Pacific Island origins. • Val’s talk featured many personal anecdotes about places and people who have lived in the area.
