• Alphasat, also known as Inmarsat-4A F4, was launched on the 25th July 2013, and it had provided Inmarsat services, other than aviation services, since 19th Nov 2013.

• On the 24th March 2015 Inmarsat transitioned the EMEA (I4F2) Classic Aero and SBB services to Alphasat. (Alphasat effectively replaced I4F2 at the same orbital slot). • The 4F2 satellite has remained co-located at 25°E since the transition of services to Alphasat to mitigate any transition issues. • As announced in 2014, it is planned that the I4F2 will be moved to 63.9°E to form a new ocean region “MEAS” (Middle-East & Asia Satellite)

9 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015 Alphasat Satellite payload Comparison with Inmarsat-4

Alphasat will provide improvements in power, capacity and available spectrum in the I4-EMEA region The improvements include:

L-band aggregate EIRP (power): 60% increase DSP resources (channels): 20% increase (plus improved efficiency) L-band spectrum: 52% increase C-band spectrum: 100% increase

These characteristics will lead to improved performance and capacity in the busiest region, I4-EMEA

As of 30/07/15, two issues have been identified as contributing to the few long latency messages and one topic (the on-aircraft handling of Media Advisories) that are being investigated; a) positions where the aircraft is making transitions between satcom and VHF and vice-versa; b) a few longer latency messages; c) on-aircraft handing of Media Advisory

28 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015 Availability Records to-date

Since the first flights in June 2014 only one unplanned outage of the safety components of the system has been noted: ˃ 6th/7th August, 4 hours

Analysis by SED, the AGGW supplier, has determined the causes. Short term mitigation measures put in place, and is now working on the necessary long-term mitigation.

30 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015 Iris Precursor Programme Overview, benefits, architecture & timeline

Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015 What is Iris?

A partnership between ESA and Inmarsat to develop “Iris Precursor”, involving 16 companies from 8 ESA member states

The service is being developed to satisfy performance requirements set for VHF Datalink and standardised for “initial 4D trajectory management”

Integrated with the European Air Traffic Management network

A new entity would be established as service provider and undergo EASA certification

32 Inmarsat satcom update ICAO YUL Sept 28th_Oct 2nd 2015 Potential benefits

Improved availability and over what is available thru VDL2 only − Provides relief to VHF spectrum pressure − Increased bandwidth available for AOC apps − Increased service coverage More efficient airspace operations leading to: − Environmental benefits and fuel savings through user preferred routings including continuous climb and descent profiles − Improved traffic predictability (particularly at oceanic boundaries) leading to reduced controller workload and potentially lower ANS charges Applicable to a range of aircraft types for FANS1/A & ATN operations: − Short and Long Haul Commercial as well as Business jets Global Datalink Convergence (ICAO and SESAR goal)
