Abstract Occupying a disjointed and vulnerable habitat, specialist Coleoptera associated with Exposed Riverine Sediments (ERS) are shown to exhibit high levels of adaptation. An assessment of the English and Welsh habitat resource confirms the presence of strong geographical and physical restraints on its distribution which partially explain the rarity of some of the associated Coleoptera. Assemblage studies reveal the presence of multiple adaptive strategies that enable specialists to utilise the resource in spite of perceived environmental pressures, and the strength of these morphological and behavioural adaptations can be used to predict abundance and distribution at alpha, beta and gamma levels. Furthermore, adaptations enforce varying nutrient acquisition strategies which spatially define communities. This study demonstrates the need specialist invertebrates have for a complex and highly connected ERS habitat with English and Welsh rivers, that exhibits structural variation along a longitudinal gradient. Reliant on riverine processes and subsidies the habitat and its associated invertebrates are symptomatic of a healthy and naturally structured lotic system operating laterally and across reach scales. Box 10380, Stn. Sainte-Foy, Québec, Quebec, Canada G1V 4C7 Abstract—The fauna of introduced rove beetles (Staphylinidae) in the Maritime Provinces of Canada is surveyed. Seventy-nine species have now been recorded. Of these, 73 have been found in Nova Scotia, 29 on Prince Edward Island, and 54 in New Brunswick. Twenty-five species are newly recorded in Nova Scotia, 16 on Prince Edward Island, and 10 in New Brunswick, for a total of 51 new provincial records. Of these, 15 species, Tachinus corticinus Gravenhorst, Mycetoporus lepidus (Gravenhorst), Habrocerus capillaricornis (Gravenhorst), Aleochara (Xenochara) lanuginosa Gravenhorst, Gnypeta caerulea (C.R. Two of these, Atheta (Microdota) amicula and Carpelimus subtilis, are newly recorded in Canada. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

    Research of the biodiversity of Tovacov lakes (Czech Republic) Main researcher: Jan Ševčík Research group: Vladislav Holec Ondřej Machač Jan Ševčík Bohumil Trávníček Filip Trnka March – September 2014 Abstract We performed biological surveys of different taxonomical groups of organisms in the area of Tovacov lakes. Many species were found: 554 plant species, 107 spider species, 27 dragonflies, 111 butterfly species, 282 beetle species, orthopterans 17 and 7 amphibian species. Especially humid and dry open habitats and coastal lake zones were inhabited by many rare species. These biotopes were found mainly at the places where mining residuals were deposited or at the places which were appropriately prepared for mining by removing the soil to the sandy gravel base (on conditions that the biotope was still in contact with water level and the biotope mosaic can be created at the slopes with low inclination and with different stages of ecological succession). Field study of biotope preferences of the individual species from different places created during mining was performed using phytosociological mapping and capture traps. Gained data were analyzed by using ordinate analyses (DCA, CCA). Results of these analyses were interpreted as follows: Technically recultivated sites are quickly getting species – homogenous. Sites created by ecological succession are species-richer during their development. Final ecological succession stage (forest) can be achieved in the same time during ecological succession as during technical recultivation. According to all our research results most biologically valuable places were selected. Appropriate management was suggested for these places in order to achieve not lowering of their biological diversity. To even improve their biological diversity some principles and particular procedures were formulated.

The family forms a well-defined taxonomic group that can be easily recognized on the basis of a combination of anatomical features that include a characteristic body shape, eleven-segmented filiform (thread-like) antennae and five- segmented tarsi on all pairs of legs. Ground beetles are often uniformly dark in colour, although some species, especially those that are day-active, are more brightly coloured and variously patterned. Identification keys to British species of Carabidae have been available for many years (for example; Joy; 1932; Lindroth, 1974) and the taxonomy has been extensively revised in a recently published key by Luff (2007). Additional aids to identification can be found on-line (e.g. http://markgtelfer.co.uk/beetles). Ground beetles are very active, fast running beetles and many species are predators of smaller invertebrates. Their study has benefitted from the use of pitfall traps (see below in methods) although the technique has to be used with an awareness of the bias that may be present in the data obtained (Greenslade, 1964).
