She is a kind and philanthropic human being. The Anne Reilly Tirone Research Fellowship gave me the luxury of focusing solely on my research and writing. In short, her continued support afforded me the most precious resource of all: time. In the summer of 2013, the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C. awarded me one of ten spots for their annual Archival Summer Seminar in Germany. While there, I not only got to do some preliminary research, but also meet some great colleagues, many of whom have provided feedback and camaraderie during the process of writing this dissertation. The History Department of the State University of New York at Buffalo provided generous funding for my research in Germany through the John Naylor Dissertation Research Fellowship. I received a Mark Diamond Research Fund Dissertation Grant from the SUNY Buffalo Graduate Student Association that allowed me to extend my stay in the German archives. The German Historical Institute also awarded me a Doctoral Research Fellowship to fund the American portion of my research on the transatlantic ties between the German and American gay rights movements. And SUNY Buffalo’s College of Arts and Sciences awarded me a Dean’s Innovation Fund, which provided funding as I sorted through my archival findings and then put pen to paper. Over the past six years, I also learned that historians simply could not do our work without the great work done by all of the archivists and librarians out there. Along the way, I have met some terrific people who are committed to preserving America and Germany’s LGBT history. Most of them are volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts to small, grassroots archives, and I’d like to thank them here: Rainer Hoffschildt, who founded the SARCH Archives in Hanover, has done meticulous and painstaking work by digging through material and personally identifying over 20,000 homosexual victims of Nazi persecution. Rainer was a iii gracious host during my time in Hanover, and many times encouraged me to answer questions that I hadn’t even asked myself yet. Albert Knoll made my time in the archives of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site as pleasant as such an experience can be. And when, at the last minute I had to cut short my stay in Munich, Albert and the volunteer team at the Forum Homosexualität München scrambled their schedules, coming in before and after work so that I could continue to do my research. The same can be said for Friedrich Schregel at Cologne’s Centrum Schwule Geschichte. There were many evenings when he came straight from work to let me in the archives. And of course, Jens Dobler and the faculty at Berlin’s wonderful Schwules Museum were fantastic at helping me locate a plethora of material for my dissertation. In the United States, my gratitude goes to Andrew Elder and Libby Bouvier, who helped me during my time in the archives of Boston’s The History Project. Paul Fasana and the team at the Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Ft. Lauderdale were also very helpful. I’d also like to thank Marjorie Bryer at the GLBT Historical Society archives in San Fransico, as well as the librarians and team at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. And lastly, I want to extend a warm thank you to John Offerdahl and the rest of the staff at the East Roswell Public Library, who always greeted me with a smile and kept a quiet study room ready for me after I moved to Atlanta to finish my dissertation. There were several people with whom I either conducted formal interviews, or simply shared a coffee and traded ideas. Annette Timm let me bounce ideas off of her when I was first conceptualizing the connections between sexual citizenship and the politics of memory in my project. There are many others, and I’m deeply grateful for all of these conversations. My dissertation committee members deserve more thanks than I can offer. Dr. Andreas Daum was a fantastic advisor, willing to give me all the space I needed in trying to figure out which direction my project would take. He always pushed me to think of the greater significance of my work, to think about the “so what?!” question with every draft I wrote. I always knew I could rely on his frank feedback, and I’m grateful to count Andy as a colleague and friend. Dr. Susan Cahn offered my first introduction to the history of gender and sexuality. She was patient with me as I tried to wrap my mind around this complicated, yet exciting way of approaching iv history and understanding the human experience. Her insightful comments forced me to articulate myself more clearly, and on more than one occasion, it was evident that she understood what I was saying better than I did. Moreover, Susan is one of the kindest and most generous souls I’ve ever met, and I’m thankful I got to know her. Dr. Sasha Pack was always quick to provide keen feedback that encouraged me to push into the finer detail and be more concise about what I was trying to argue. And I’m certainly grateful for the advice offered by Dr. Geoffrey Giles. Since we met at a German Studies Association conference, Geoffrey has been a friend and, as a leading expert on the Nazi persecution of homosexuals, his feedback has made this dissertation all the better. I also want to thank the professors at Valdosta State University who so greatly influenced me as a student, a scholar, and as a person. Dr. Charles Johnson was my undergraduate advisor, and he taught me the discipline it takes to write history. I will never forget the day that Charles simply asked me to leave his office because he could tell I had written my paper at the last minute; he told me to only come back when I had put some real effort into it! So, Charles taught me to be disciplined, but more importantly, he also taught me to look up from the books and learn from the world around me. In many ways, I owe my outlook on life as a scholar and as a person to Dr. Matthew Richard. His cultural anthropology courses taught me to think critically and approach questions with an interdisciplinary mindset. At the conclusion of my first semester with Matthew, I remember feeling as if I had discovered an extra sense that allowed me to see the world more clearly. Most importantly, though, Matthew instilled in me a deep conviction that education should be a form of activism, a force for positive and meaningful social change in the world. I also learned a lot from Dr. Ofelia Nikolova, who was the director of VSU’s Honors Program. She’s a larger than life character with a keen intellect and a heart as good as gold. She encouraged all of her students to get out of the classroom, engage in their own research, and then present it at conferences. I’ll always be thankful for Ofelia’s encouragement, which made this boy from rural southwest Georgia feel confident enough to stand before crowds of scholars and present his ideas. I would also be remiss if I did not thank Dr. Susan Eischeid. She continues to be a great friend, and one of the things I’m grateful for was how she never made me feel like I was just a student.

A candle-lighting ceremony is an integral part of the commemoration at which six candles are always lit for the six million Jews who perished, as well as candles for all of the other victims. The commemoration serves as a constant reminder of the dangers of racism and discrimination and provides lessons from the past that are relevant today. Summary of the Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust Issued in January 2000, on the 55th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945, and endorsed by all participating countries, including Ireland We, the governments attending the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust, recognise that it was a tragically defining episode of the 20th Century, a crisis for Europe and a universal catastrophe. The unprecedented character of the Holocaust fundamentally challenged the foundations of civilisation. After more than half a century, it remains an event close enough in time that survivors can still bear witness to the horrors that engulfed the Jewish people. The terrible suffering of millions of Jews and other victims of the Nazis has left an indelible stain across Europe that must forever be seared in our collective memory. The selfless sacrifices of those who defied the Nazis, and sometimes gave their own lives to protect or rescue Holocaust victims, must also be inscribed in our hearts.

    1 A Queer Premiere: Jean Cocteau’s The Typewriter Introduction Late in April 1941, toward the close of the first Parisian theatre season fol- lowing the Defeat, Jean Cocteau’s La Machine à écrire (The Typewriter) opened, then closed, then reopened at the Théâtre Hébertot. Written in the style of a detective drama, the play starred the actor generally known—at least in the entertainment world at the time—as Cocteau’s sometime lover and perpetual companion, Jean Marais, as identical twin brothers. The re- views are curiously reticent about what exactly occurred at the Hébertot, and historians and critics offer sometimes contradictory pieces of a puzzle that, even when carefully put together, forms an incomplete picture. The fragments are, however, intriguing. Merrill Rosenberg describes how, on the evening of April 29, 1941, the dress rehearsal (répétition génerale), sponsored “as a gala” by the daily Paris-Soir and attended by various “dig- nitaries,” caused in the Hébertot’s auditorium a demonstration by members of the Parti Populaire Français (PPF). This disruption prompted Vichy’s ambas- sador to Paris, Fernand de Brinon, to order the withdrawal of the production (“Vichy’s Theatrical Venture” 136). Francis Steegmuller describes the disor- der that greeted the Typewriter premiere and the revival of Les Parents Terribles (at the Gymnase later that year): “stink bombs exploded in the theatres, and hoodlums filled the aisles and climbed onto the stage, shouting obscenities at Cocteau and Marais as a couple” (442).1 Patrick Marsh too notes that these plays “were seriously disrupted by violent scenes fomented by fascist sym- pathizers and members of the Parti Populaire Français” (“Le Théâtre 1 2 THE DRAMA OF FALLEN FRANCE Français .

The Culture of Remembrance of World War II and the Holocaust in Unified Germany Christoph Thonfeld* Abstract Since the 1990s, Germany has dealt with the difficult integration of collective and individual memories from East and West Germany. Alongside the publicly more prominent remembrances of perpetration has occurred an upsurge in the memories of German suffering. At the same time, Europe has increasingly become a point of reference for national cultures of remembrance. These developments have been influenced by post-national factors such as Europeanisation and transnationalisation along with the emergence of a more multicultural society. However, there have also been strong trends toward renationalisation and normalisation. The last twenty years have witnessed a type of interaction with the ‘other’ as constructively recognised; while at the same time it is also excluded by renationalising trends. Researchers have described the combination of the latter two trends as the cosmopolitanisation of memory. This article adopts the diachronic perspective to assess the preliminary results since 1990 of the actual working of this cosmopolitanisation process within the culture of remembrance of World War II and its aftermath in Germany. (#9922) $75.00 The culture of amate paper dates back to pre-Columbian Meso-American times. The word amate derives from amatl, the Nahuatl word for paper. Mayan and Aztec Indians painted on amate paper to create codices (accordion folded books) depicting stories historical events and even astrology. San Pablito, a settlement of Otomí speaking Indians in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, is renowned as a village of brujería (witchcraft) and the only remaining major center of indigenous papermakers in Mexico. The cut paper spirits are also named as deities, including dios de abeja, dios de antiguo, madre tierra. In addition, the Otomí cut paper camas (beds), upon which the paper figurines are laid during rituals. A lesser known aspect of Otomí tourist art is the making of small books or postcards from handmade paper where the lighter paper is used as a background surface, and brown and darker muñecos, the “sacred paper cuttings”, are glued on. These figures are accompanied by texts in Spanish written in capital letters with felt-tipped pens.

    Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Fall 2017 (9:2) Ascending the Scaffold: Knowing and Judging in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter David Rampton, University of Ottawa, Canada Abstract: Reminding students that Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter begins with an exercise in public shaming helps them relate to the novel. It is set in the mid-17th century, a long time ago, yet the continuities persist. Hester Prynne is forced to mount the scaffold and expose herself and her child to the citizens of Boston, who want to see her degraded and to learn the name of her partner in moral crime. Today convicted criminals in the American justice system are routinely required to make a similar sort of public display. The desire to know how the battle between good and evil is going in Puritan Boston, Hawthorne says, is something that binds the community together and threatens to tear it apart. Knowing can mean sympathy and compassion, but it can also involve a pernicious desire to trespass in the interior of another's heart. Our exercises in close reading reveal that the desire to "know" someone, as the novel's slow motion "whodunit" clearly shows, can lead to deeper intimacy, or a denial of their quintessential humanity. Analyzing the shaming scenes that organize the narrative means helping students to see more clearly the structure of the novel, the issues at stake in it, and the ambiguities of guilt and innocence that dominate in our meditations on our own lives. Teaching The Scarlet Letter is one of the great experiences in the career of any teacher, for reasons that are not far to seek: it is arguably the most widely read 19th-century American novel; its subject, adultery, still has a magnetic attractiveness for us; and the story it narrates is firmly inscribed in the history of America and its culture.

With her needlework, she struggles to subvert the original signification of the Accepted 19 February 2021 letter A and to build her new identity as an able, angelic and admirable woman. She transforms the letter A for Available online 9 March 2021 herself outside the patriarchal signifier. However, her return to Boston, where she voluntarily wears the letter illustrates that Hester acknowledges the importance of the social order and her submission to the public. She has the rebellious spirit but it is not strong enough to overthrow the patriarchy. Hester’s dual image of subversion to submission is attributed to Hawthornes’ ambiguous attitude toward women.

Wahlperiode 23. 03. 99 Kleine Anfrage der Abgeordneten Dr. Norbert Lammert, Bernd Neumann (Bremen), Dr. Rita Süssmuth, Anton Pfeifer, Hartmut Koschyk, Margarete Späte, Erika Steinbach, Dr. Erika Schuchardt und der Fraktion der CDU/CSU Umbau der Villa Massimo Die Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo in Rom ist eine der von der Bun- desregierung geförderten Institutionen im Ausland, die deutschen Künst- lern die Möglichkeit bietet, sich künstlerisch weiterzuentwickeln und dort Anregungen für ihre Arbeit zu finden. Wegen geplanter Umbauarbeiten soll nunmehr die Villa geschlossen werden. Dies hat zu kritischen öffent- lichen Reaktionen geführt. Wir fragen deshalb die Bundesregierung: 1. Welche Überlegungen liegen den Umbauplanungen der Bundesregie- rung zugrunde, und welche Kosten fallen dabei für welche Umbau- maßnahmen an? 2. Seit wann werden diese Umbaumaßnahmen geplant, und wann wurde der Umbau beschlossen? 3. Wie lange werden diese Umbaumaßnahmen dauern, und in welchem Zeitraum wird die Villa Massimo dafür geschlossen? 4. Wann und in welcher Weise wurde der Direktor in die Umbau- planungen für die Villa Massimo einbezogen und mit welchem Ergeb- nis? 5. Ist der Direktor der Villa Massimo angemahnt worden, sich zu den Umbauplanungen sowie zu den sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen nicht mehr zu äußern? 6. Ist der geplante Umbau gerade jetzt notwendig und die damit ver- bundene Schließung der Villa im „Heiligen Jahr“ 2000 vertretbar? 7.     memoria Alcuni cenni sulla deportazione e sullo sterminio delle persone LGBT Pare che gay, lesbiche bisessuali e transessuali/transgender (termini che noi oggi usiamo) siano stati/e il terzo gruppo, dopo ebrei, sinti e rom, ad essere perseguita- ti/e; tante persone mandate a morire non per una loro particolare appartenenza etnica, politica o religiosa, ma a causa di quella che era considerata una malattia contagiosa che li separava anche dalle altre categorie perseguitate. In Germania il famigerato paragrafo 175 fu abrogato solo nel 1969. Ciò significò per i gay tedeschi essere costretti a nascondersi ancora per un quarto di secolo. Con la liberazione dai campi da parte degli Alleati infatti, i Triangoli Rosa non riacquistarono la libertà. Statunitensi e Inglesi non li considerarono alla stessa stregua degli altri internati, ma criminali comuni. E anche dopo l’abolizione del paragrafo 175 la gran parte di loro restò nell’ombra annullando la propria esistenza nel silenzio. L’ostracismo subito durante quegli anni bui e la vergogna provata li aveva profondamente segnati. Come dimenticare infatti che nei campi erano stati posti al livello più basso della scala di valore stabilita dalle SS, quel sistema di classificazione degli internati in gruppi contraddistinti da segni particolari che aveva lo scopo di creare una gerar- chia che dava mano libera ai Triangoli Verdi, i criminali comuni, su tutti gli altri. Mentre per le lesbiche, perseguitate come “asociali”, il segno di riconoscimento fu il triangolo nero, riservato alle prostitute, per gay (ma anche maschi effemminati o dal ruolo/identità di genere non conforme, che potremmo oggi definire transgender o transessuali MtF) fu scelto un grande triangolo rosa: il colore per negare la loro virilità, la dimensione per distinguerli da lontano.
