Smith ©2008 Elana Passman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ELANA PASSMAN The Cultivation of Friendship: French and German Cultural Cooperation, 1925-1954 (under the direction of Donald M. Reid) Through a series of case studies of French-German friendship societies, this dissertation investigates the ways in which activists in France and Germany battled the dominant strains of nationalism to overcome their traditional antagonism. It asks how the Germans and the French recast their relationship as “hereditary enemies” to enable them to become partners at the heart of today’s Europe. Looking to the transformative power of civic activism, it examines how journalists, intellectuals, students, industrialists, and priests developed associations and lobbying groups to reconfigure the French-German dynamic through cultural exchanges, bilingual or binational journals, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and charitable ventures. As a study of transnational cultural relations, this dissertation focuses on individual mediators along with the networks and institutions they developed; it also explores the history of the idea of cooperation. Attempts at rapprochement in the interwar period proved remarkably resilient in the face of the prevalent nationalist spirit. While failing to override hostilities and sustain peace, the campaign for cooperation adopted a new face in the misguided shape of collaborationism during the Second World War. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. © Copyright 2016 Olivia Bolek Abstract While many people know that World War II France was occupied by the Germans, retaining little sovereignty in the de facto Vichy government, many may not realize the extent to which the French collaborated with their Nazi occupiers and how many anti-Semitic measures were in fact created by the Vichy government. After the war, the crimes committed by the French against the Jews became a taboo which slowly transformed over the years into what is today considered to be an obsession with the topic. These events are best demonstrated through the 1942 Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup in which Parisian authorities gathered over 13,000 Jews, detaining over half of them in the Vélodrome d’Hiver, an indoor cycling arena in Paris, for almost a week without food, water, or sanitation. -

All schools should talk about different relationships so that it’s better and we don’t get bullied. (Female, 12 years) LGBT issues were not included in PSE at my school even although the teachers knew that there were LGBT young people at my school. (Male, 17 years) The purpose of these lesson plans is to provide suggestions and examples that teachers might draw on to address homophobia and homophobic bullying in the context of the values, purposes and principles of Curriculum for Excellence. These plans could meet aspects of a range of curriculum areas, including a number of experiences and outcomes grouped under the Health and Wellbeing. They are also part of a wider resource looking at whole school ethos, policies and approaches to preventing and dealing with homophobic incidents and a number of other toolkits addressing discrimination and equality issues. These lesson plans are not intended to be prescriptive but to support teachers to challenge and deal with the issue of homophobia confidently and sensitively and contribute to the development of the four capacities in young people. -

GEORGES-PAUL COLLET JEAN COCTEAU ET MAX JACOB: DEUX POETES-ESTHÉTICIENS* C'est dans son histoire des Arts plastiques (1870-1930)1 que Jacques-Émile Blanche parle des «esthéticiens-poètes» à propos d'Apollinaire, Cendrars, Reverdy, Salmon, Cocteau et Max Jacob. Renversons les termes, voulez-vous, et adoptons l'appellation «poète-esthéticien» qui me semble mieux convenir. L'auteur écrit: «Je n'ai jamais cessé de désigner les poètes, et Cocteau au premier rang, comme les vrais révélateurs de l'univers sensible aux peintres et aux sculpteurs, qui sans eux n'auraient pas pris conscience de leur secret instinct et des possibilités de leurs moyens d'expression.»2 C'est donc dans ce sens-là, et dans une acception encore plus large, c'est-à-dire le poète qui s'intéresse aux diverses formes de l'art, et se montre capable d'en écrire, que j'emploierai le sous-titre choisi. Car, à l'évidence, nous ne saurions qualifier Cocteau d'«esthéticien» dans la signification traditionnelle du mot: celui (ou celle) qui étudie le beau dans la nature et dans l'art. Max Jacob voit dans l'esthéticien un «théoricien de l'art>>, et Taine un «philosophe des Beaux-Arts.» Dans le même livre, Blanche évoque les séances de musique, de littérature, pendant la Grande Guerre, qui se déroulaient à la Littératures, n° 5 (1990) *. Ideological Mistakes of Louis Ferdinand Céline and Emil Cioran
JOURNAL OF ROMANIAN LITERARY STUDIES Issue no. 5/2014 IDEOLOGICAL MISTAKES OF LOUIS FERDINAND CÉLINE AND EMIL CIORAN Mara Magda MAFTEI Université de Paris 3 Sorbonne la Nouvelle Abstract: 2011 was a year of reference for both Emil Cioran and Louis Ferdinand Céline. We celebrated the centenary of the Romanian philosopher who chose to exile himself in Paris and also the 50-year anniversary of Céline’s death. In fact, we witnessed controversial issues in France linked to the question of whether we should include the 50th anniversary of the death of Céline among the official commemorations of 2011. While Cioran has been forgiven for having supported the Romanian far right (the Iron Guard), some French intellectuals cannot forgive Céline for his collaboration with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. In fact, the anti-Semitic rage of both Cioran and Céline cannot be ignored. Cioran and Céline gave up defending their political ideas after the defeat of Germany. But, while Cioran produced a new text on Jews in 1956, this time extremely laudatory, the extermination of Jews left Céline cold, and it is perhaps this aspect that makes him rather unique among the writers of the interwar period who were influenced by Nazi philosophy. Early History As France's capital and most populous city, Paris has long been a natural draw for those seeking to escape the traditional conservatism of provincial France. Michael D. Sibalis notes that Paris's reputation as a focus for queer life in France dates back as far as the Middle Ages, citing as evidence among other things a twelfth-century poet's description of the city as reveling in "the vice of Sodom." Medieval Paris was not exactly a queer paradise, however. Throughout the Middle Ages numerous poor Parisians were regularly convicted and, in some instances, executed for engaging in sodomy and other same-sex activities. Things improved somewhat by the early modern period. While their exact correspondence to contemporary categories of glbtq sexuality is open to debate, well-developed sodomitical subcultures had emerged in Paris by the eighteenth century. Some historians, such as Maurice Lever, claim these subcultures formed a "homosexual world . -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Poet, translator, literary and art critic, and short story writer, Edouard Roditi was associated with most of the twentieth-century's avant-garde literary movements from Surrealism to post-modernism. For more than sixty years, he produced such an astonishing variety of smart, lively, and moving poetry and prose that nobody objected when he dubbed himself "The Pharaoh of Eclecticism." A member of several predominantly homosexual social circles, Roditi maintained friendships with literary and artistic figures ranging from Paul Bowles and Jean Cocteau to Paul Tchelitchew and Christian Dior. His art and literary criticism held artists and writers to the very highest standards and insisted that intense but uncritical infatuation with flashy new trends could end in disappointment and heartbreak. His Internationalist Birthright Roditi was born in Paris on June 6, 1910. He was the beneficiary of a remarkably rich confluence of heritages--Jewish, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and Greek--and was truly international, both American and European. His father, Oscar, an Italian born in Constantinople, had become a United States citizen after his father emigrated to America and gained citizenship. Although Oscar's father had left the family behind in Europe, all the family in Europe became citizens when he did by virtue of the citizenship statutes in force at that time. Roditi's mother, Violet, had an equally rich family history. She was born in France but became an English citizen in her youth. When she married Oscar, she too became a United States citizen. -

It analyzes three under-studied works taken as samples of texts that touch upon the question of contested identities. The texts are chosen from the main divisions of the political spectrum, namely Gaullist, far right, and far left. Although the focus is on the texts themselves, I trace the arguments found in these works to the larger discourses in which they are inscribed. In particular, I address the questions of guilt and innocence, justice and vengeance, past and future in the given historical circumstances. -

Davis IERES Occasional Papers, no. 2, May 15, 2019 Transnational History of the Far Right Series Transnational History of the Far Right Series A Collective Research Project led by Marlene Laruelle At a time when global political dynamics seem to be moving in favor of illiberal regimes around the world, this re- search project seeks to fill in some of the blank pages in the contemporary history of the far right, with a particular focus on the transnational dimensions of far-right movements in the broader Europe/Eurasia region. Of all European elections, the one scheduled for May 23-26, 2019, which will decide the composition of the 9th European Parliament, may be the most unpredictable, as well as the most important, in the history of the European Union. Far-right forces may gain unprecedented ground, with polls suggesting that they will win up to one-fifth of the 705 seats that will make up the European parliament after Brexit.1 The outcome of the election will have a profound impact not only on the political environment in Europe, but also on the trans- atlantic and Euro-Russian relationships. -

The Educated Spectator: Cinema and Pedagogy in France, 1909-1930 Casiana Elena Ionita Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Casiana Elena Ionita All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Educated Spectator: Cinema and Pedagogy in France, 1909-1930 Casiana Elena Ionita This dissertation draws on a wide range of sources (including motion pictures, film journals, and essays) in order to analyze the debate over the social and aesthetic role of cinema that took place in France from 1909 to 1930. During this period, as the new medium became the most popular form of entertainment, moralists of all political persuasions began to worry that cinematic representations of illicit acts could provoke social unrest. In response, four groups usually considered antagonistic — republicans, Catholics, Communists, and the first film avant- garde known as the Impressionists — set out to redefine cinema by focusing particularly on shaping film viewers. To do so, these movements adopted similar strategies: they organized lectures and film clubs, published a variety of periodicals, commissioned films for specific causes, and screened commercial motion pictures deemed compatible with their goals. Tracing the history of such projects, I argue that they insisted on educating spectators both through and about cinema. Indeed, each movement sought to teach spectators of all backgrounds how to understand the new medium of cinema while also supporting specific films with particular aesthetic and political goals. Despite their different interests, the Impressionists, republicans, Catholics, and Communists all aimed to create communities of viewers that would learn a certain way of decoding motion pictures.
