Sutami Road No. 36A, Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia ABSTRACT This study examines the leadership of Admiral Malahayati as an Acehnese female figure who lived in the sixteenth century. The research question to be answered is how is the dimension of leadership that underlies the actions of Admiral Malahayati while serving as the Royal Aceh Navy commander. The research method is historical with the Collingwood approach. Thus, the analysis is not only focused on uncovering historical events that appear to the eye but also the dimensions of the motives and values contained in the actions of Admiral Malahayati. The results of the study indicate that Admiral Malahayati is one of the Acehnese female figures who has a strong, courageous and integrity representation of leadership values. Admiral Malahayati's leadership value is different from other Acehnese female figures because of Malahayati's position as an Admiral in the public sector. AdmiralMalahayai has a feminist dimension in its masculine leadership values as commander of the Royal Aceh Navy. The paradox between feminism and masculinity became an important dimension in his leadership in the InongBalee fleet, especially when facing polemics with the Netherlands and Britain. Het zou zo maar kunnen dat het deze Nederlander was die het barre continent Antarctica heeft ontdekt. Het kán, maar de werkelijke toedracht is verloren gegaan in de mist van vier eeuwen geschiedenis en in de oorlogsomstandigheden van die tijd. Het maakt voor de naamgeving van het laboratorium niet veel uit want het ‘wijdlopig verhaal’ is al bijzonder genoeg. Het komt uit een periode in de Europese geschiedenis waarin Nederland voorop liep in de zoektocht naar de grenzen van de wereld, naar kennis over die wereld, en natuurlijk, indachtig de Nederlandse handelsgeest, naar profijt. Opvallend is dat de expeditie een Engelsman als navigator in dienst had. Ook was de herinnering aan de Engels-Nederlandse verdediging tegen de Spaanse Armada in die tijd natuurlijk nog springlevend. Ruim vier eeuwen later werken Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk samen aan de bouw van het Dirck Gerritsz laboratorium. Nederland sluit graag aan bij de expertise van de British Antarctic Survey op het gebied van het poolonderzoek. De samenwerking garandeert niet alleen een hoge mate van wetenschappelijke kwaliteit. Het betekent ook dat we de Nederlandse onderzoekers met een gerust hart naar deze voor de mens onveilige omgeving kunnen sturen, want de Britse collega’s hebben de zaken goed voor elkaar. Wetenschappelijke kwaliteit en veiligheid stonden dan ook voorop bij NWO, toen het Ministerie van OCW in 2010 een bedrag van € 6 miljoen ter beschikking stelde voor onderzoek in het Zuidpoolgebied. -

* omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. A series of prototypes built in Spain in that century incorporated concepts and technological solutions from both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic maritime traditions, and became the basis for this new type of vessel. The Spanish galleon was designed in response to changes in Atlantic trade routes at the beginning of the 16th century when, as a result of Spanish transoceanic expansion, new and more specialized vessels were needed for both the coastal defense of Spain and its overseas territories, as well as to escort the oceanic fleets. In November 1588, King Philip II of Spain ordered the construction of 12 new galleons of 500, 600, and 800 toneladas, four ships of each tonnage, specifically designed as warships. These galleons were to replace the losses that occurred after the failure of the Spanish Armada against England, since the chronic Spanish shortage of warships was aggravated by the loss of some of the best naval units. This decision marked the beginning of the largest shipbuilding program attempted in Spain until that moment. -

At least one commentator has speculated that this is the engraving work of Georg Keller in Frankfurt. The view shows the trading efforts in Java attempted by the Compagnie van Verre of Amsterdam. The Compagnie was established in 1594 by nine citizens of Amsterdam, with the purpose of breaking up Portugal's monopoly on the pepper trade. The Compagnie outfitted and sent three heavily armed ships and a pinnace under the leadership of Cornelis de Houtman, with orders to break into the trade. On April 2, 1595 the ships set off from Texel, with 248 officers and men on board. The expedition followed the routes described by van Linschoten, who had earlier been in the service of the Portugese and described the route in his book. In June 1596, the ships arrived at Bantam, the most important pepper port in the Western part of Java. The attempt to purchase Pepper was largely unsuccessful, with the Portugese traders in the region blocking most of the Dutch efforts to trade. -

In het spoor van de ‘liefde’ Japans-Nederlandse betrekkingen sinds 1600 Het Museum voor Volkenkunde in Rotterdam houdt vanaf 6 september tot en met 4 januari 1987 de tentoonstelling ‘In het spoor van de Liefde, Japans-Nederlandse ontmoetingen sinds 1600’. De culturele relaties die ontstonden tussen Nederland en Japan in het spoor van de handelsbetrekkingen vormen een hoofdmotief van de expositie. Vanuit economische, sociale en cultuurhistorische invalshoeken wordt het verhaal verteld van de zich verdiepende interesse die Japanners en Nederlanders voor elkaars cultuur ontwikkelden. Zo intensief als de handelscontacten met Japan in onze eeuw zijn, zo klein waren ze in de zeventiende eeuw. Het zelf gekozen isolement van Japan sloot handel met de niet-Japanse wereld vrijwel volledig uit. De navelstreng van het land van de rijzende zon met de rest van de wereld werd gevormd door een Hollandse handelsnederzetting op het eiland Deshima in de Baai van Nagasaki. Het zou tot 1853 duren vooraleer het isolement door de Amerikaanse marine onder leiding van Commander Perry werd verbroken. De wederzijdse beïnvloeding Nederland-Japan bleef ook daarna groot. Onder leiding van Jacques Mahu en Simon de Cordes van de schepen, ‘Hoop’, ‘Liefde’, ‘Blijde Boodschap’, ‘Trouw’ verlieten op 27 juni 1598 vijf schepen de haven van en ‘Geloof’ zouden de indruk kunnen wekken, dat het hier Rotterdam om koers te zetten naar Oost-Indië. De namen een godsdienstige missie betrof. Mis. De aanvankelijke koers Aanvankelijk golden strenge reglementen voor het eiland Deshima. De Hollanders mochten het eiland niet verlaten, ze mochten geen Hollandse vrouwen meenemen en geen Japanse Vrouwen trouwen. Gaandeweg werden de reglementen versoepeld en kreeg ook het gezinsleven een kans op deze Hollandse nederzetting. -
