Mohammad Rizaldi, S.T., M.Ds., selaku Ketua Program Studi Desain Komunikasi Visual Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. 2. Prima Murti Rane, M.Ds., selaku Dosen Pembimbing. 3. Kata kunci : Laksamana Keumalahayati, Buku Ilustrasi, Pahlawan Nasional vi ABSTRACT Indonesia‟s National Heroes/Heroine is a highest title in Indonesia, and it is given to people who had fought against colonizer for the nation. Thus so far, according to Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Social Minister of Indonesia, there has been 173 National Heroes/Heroine, 160 men and 13 women. So the author would like to commit in making a illustrated-biographical book about one of the Heroine of Indonesia, she is Laksamana Keumalahayati. She has been a great heroine and fought for Indonesia, especially for Aceh through the colonialization era. Although her name was adapted for one of Indonesia‟s battleship, she is still remained unknown for most of people, especially children between 7-12 years old. The elementary school children mostly knew Indonesia‟s National Heroes/Heroine through school, but apparently some school has not give much information about the Heroine, based on author‟s data research by giving questionnaire to the target mentioned in Tangerang area. Based on these issues, the author would like to design a illustrated book to mentioned Laksamana Keumalahayati‟s bravery and dedications for the nation because she is an important figure for the nation‟s history. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Art of Resistance: Trauma, Gender, and Traditional Performance in Acehnese Communities, 1976-2011 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Women’s Studies by Kimberly Svea Clair 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Art of Resistance: Trauma, Gender, and Traditional Performance in Acehnese Communities, 1976-2011 by Kimberly Svea Clair Doctor of Philosophy in Women’s Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Susan McClary, Chair After nearly thirty years of separatist conflict, Aceh, Indonesia was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a disaster that killed 230,000 and left 500,000 people homeless. Though numerous analyses have focused upon the immediate economic and political impact of the conflict and the tsunami upon Acehnese society, few studies have investigated the continuation of traumatic experience into the “aftermath” of these events and the efforts that Acehnese communities have made towards trauma recovery. My dissertation examines the significance of Acehnese performance traditions—including dance, music, and theater practices—for Acehnese trauma survivors. Focusing on the conflict, the tsunami, political and religious oppression, discrimination, and hardships experienced within the diaspora, my dissertation explores the ii benefits and limitations of Acehnese performance as a tool for resisting both large-scale and less visible forms of trauma. Humanitarian workers and local artists who used Acehnese performance to facilitate trauma recovery following the conflict and the tsunami in Aceh found that the traditional arts offered individuals a safe space in which to openly discuss their grievances, to strengthen feelings of cultural belonging, and to build solidarity with community members.

  • What Is Indonesian Islam?
    M. Laffan, draft paper prepared for discussion at the UCLA symposium ‘Islam and Southeast Asia’, May 15 2006 What is Indonesian Islam? Michael Laffan, History Department, Princeton University* Abstract This paper is a preliminary essay thinking about the concept of an Indonesian Islam. After considering the impact of the ideas of Geertz and Benda in shaping the current contours of what is assumed to fit within this category, and how their notions were built on the principle that the region was far more multivocal in the past than the present, it turns to consider whether, prior to the existance of Indonesia, there was ever such a notion as Jawi Islam and questions what modern Indonesians make of their own Islamic history and its impact on the making of their religious subjectivities. What about Indonesian Islam? Before I begin I would like to present you with three recent statements reflecting either directly or indirectly on assumptions about Indonesian Islam. The first is the response of an Australian academic to the situation in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, the second and third have been made of late by Indonesian scholars The traditionalist Muslims of Aceh, with their mystical, Sufistic approach to life and faith, are a world away from the fundamentalist Islamists of Saudi Arabia and some other Arab states. The Acehnese have never been particularly open to the bigoted "reformism" of radical Islamist groups linked to Saudi Arabia. … Perhaps it is for this reason that aid for Aceh has been so slow coming from wealthy Arab nations such as Saudi Arabia.1 * This, admittedly in-house, piece presented at the UCLA Colloquium on Islam and Southeast Asia: Local, National and Transnational Studies on May 15, 2006, is very much a tentative first stab in the direction I am taking in my current project on the Making of Indonesian Islam.

While keeping in mind the dangers of oversimplification, it could nevertheless be argued that despite their variety, international relations fall mostly into either of two familiar types: The first takes the form of war or con- quest, while the second pertains to commerce or international trade.1 It is evident that these two categories are not mutually exclusive; war and trade have often gone hand in hand.

International Journal of Education and Social Science Research ISSN 2581-5148 Vol. 2, No. 04; 2019 BETWEEN FEMINISITY AND MASCULINITY: THE LEADERSHIP OF ADMIRAL MALAHAYATI IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Desi Fitri Ayu Lestari, Djono, Musa Pelu History Education Postgraduate, UniversitasSebelasMaret Ir. Sutami Road No. 36A, Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia ABSTRACT This study examines the leadership of Admiral Malahayati as an Acehnese female figure who lived in the sixteenth century. The research question to be answered is how is the dimension of leadership that underlies the actions of Admiral Malahayati while serving as the Royal Aceh Navy commander. The research method is historical with the Collingwood approach. Thus, the analysis is not only focused on uncovering historical events that appear to the eye but also the dimensions of the motives and values contained in the actions of Admiral Malahayati. The results of the study indicate that Admiral Malahayati is one of the Acehnese female figures who has a strong, courageous and integrity representation of leadership values. Admiral Malahayati's leadership value is different from other Acehnese female figures because of Malahayati's position as an Admiral in the public sector. AdmiralMalahayai has a feminist dimension in its masculine leadership values as commander of the Royal Aceh Navy. The paradox between feminism and masculinity became an important dimension in his leadership in the InongBalee fleet, especially when facing polemics with the Netherlands and Britain. KEYWORDS: Malahayati, Aceh, Leadership A. INTRODUCTION In 2017, the Government of Indonesia awarded the title of national hero to Admiral Malahayati. Admiral Malahayati became the third female figure, after FatmawatiSoekarno (appointed in 2000), OpuDaengRisaju (appointed in 2006), and AgungHj.

  • The Punishment of Islamic Sex Crimes in a Modern Legal System the Islamic Qanun of Aceh, Indonesia
CAMMACK.FINAL3 (DO NOT DELETE) 6/1/2016 5:02 PM THE PUNISHMENT OF ISLAMIC SEX CRIMES IN A MODERN LEGAL SYSTEM THE ISLAMIC QANUN OF ACEH, INDONESIA Mark Cammack The role of Islamic law as state law was significantly reduced over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This decline in the importance of Islamic doctrine has been attributed primarily to the spread of European colonialism. The western powers that ruled Muslim lands replaced much of the existing law in colonized territories with laws modeled after those applied in the home country. The trend toward a narrower role for Islamic law reversed itself in the latter part of the twentieth century. Since the 1970s, a number of majority Muslim states have passed laws prescribing the application of a form of Islamic law on matters that had long been governed exclusively by laws derived from the western legal tradition. A central objective of many of these Islamization programs has been to implement Islamic criminal law, and a large share of the new Islamic crimes that have been passed relate to sex offenses. This paper looks at the enactment and enforcement of recent criminal legislation involving sexual morality in the Indonesian province of Aceh. In the early 2000s, the provincial legislature for Aceh passed a series of laws prescribing punishments for Islamic crimes, the first such legislation in the country’s history. The first piece of legislation, enacted in 2002, authorizes punishment in the form of imprisonment, fine, or caning for acts defined as violating Islamic orthodoxy or religious practice.1 The 2002 statute also established an Islamic police force called the Wilayatul Hisbah charged 1.

    * omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Combining the best of maritime and social history, this book will change our understanding of the commercial dynamics of the most successful economic organization of the period. robert parthesius Robert Parthesius is a naval historian and director of the Centre for International Heritage Activities in Leiden. dutch ships in amsterdam tropical waters studies in the dutch golden age The Development of 978 90 5356 517 9 the Dutch East India Company (voc) Amsterdam University Press Shipping Network in Asia www.aup.nl dissertation 1595-1660 Amsterdam University Press Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters The development of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) shipping network in Asia - Robert Parthesius Founded in as part of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age (Amsterdams Centrum voor de Studie van de Gouden Eeuw) aims to promote the history and culture of the Dutch Republic during the ‘long’ seventeenth century (c.
