Het zou zo maar kunnen dat het deze Nederlander was die het barre continent Antarctica heeft ontdekt. Het kán, maar de werkelijke toedracht is verloren gegaan in de mist van vier eeuwen geschiedenis en in de oorlogsomstandigheden van die tijd. Het maakt voor de naamgeving van het laboratorium niet veel uit want het ‘wijdlopig verhaal’ is al bijzonder genoeg. Het komt uit een periode in de Europese geschiedenis waarin Nederland voorop liep in de zoektocht naar de grenzen van de wereld, naar kennis over die wereld, en natuurlijk, indachtig de Nederlandse handelsgeest, naar profijt. Opvallend is dat de expeditie een Engelsman als navigator in dienst had. Ook was de herinnering aan de Engels-Nederlandse verdediging tegen de Spaanse Armada in die tijd natuurlijk nog springlevend. Ruim vier eeuwen later werken Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk samen aan de bouw van het Dirck Gerritsz laboratorium. Nederland sluit graag aan bij de expertise van de British Antarctic Survey op het gebied van het poolonderzoek. De samenwerking garandeert niet alleen een hoge mate van wetenschappelijke kwaliteit. Het betekent ook dat we de Nederlandse onderzoekers met een gerust hart naar deze voor de mens onveilige omgeving kunnen sturen, want de Britse collega’s hebben de zaken goed voor elkaar. Wetenschappelijke kwaliteit en veiligheid stonden dan ook voorop bij NWO, toen het Ministerie van OCW in 2010 een bedrag van € 6 miljoen ter beschikking stelde voor onderzoek in het Zuidpoolgebied. Daarmee kon NWO het laboratorium opbouwen en een subsidieronde organiseren voor de bijbehorende onderzoeksprojecten naar onder andere klimaatgassen, de voedselketen in zee en naar smeltwater van gletsjers. Zou Dirck Gerritsz zich dit allemaal hebben kunnen voorstellen toen hij vier eeuwen geleden op 64 graden Zuiderbreedte hooch Berchachtich Landt zag? Prof. Jos Engelen, Voorzitter NWO 2 | foreword Why have we named a Dutch laboratory in Antarctica after an unknown trader from the sixteenth century? Was it indeed this Dutchman who discovered the barren continent of Antarctica? He might have been. However the true facts have been lost in the mists of four centuries of history and the prevailing wars of that period. Yet none of this really matters for the naming of the laboratories because the ‘elaborate story’ is already special enough. It originates from a period in European history when the Dutch led the way in seeking the boundaries of the world, knowledge about it and, remembering the Dutch commercial spirit, profit. Interestingly the expedition employed an Englishman as the navigator. Memories of the Anglo-Dutch defence against the Spanish Armada were vividly remembered at that time. More than four centuries later the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are working together on the construction of the Dirck Gerritsz Laboratory. The Netherlands is pleased to draw upon the expertise of the British Antarctic Survey in the area of polar research. The collaboration guarantees not only a high level of scientific quality. It also means that we can confidently send Dutch researchers to this treacherous environment because our British colleagues have all of the necessary measures and facilities in place. Scientific quality and safety were NWO’s main concerns when the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science made a budget of 6 million euros available in 2010 for research on Antarctica. NWO used this budget to construct the laboratory and to organise a funding round for the associated research projects into subjects such as climate gasses, the food chain in the sea, and glacial meltwater. Could Dirck Gerritsz have imagined all of this when he saw high mountainous land at 64 degrees South some 400 years ago? De beoordeling van subsidieaanvragen, de uitvoering en de coördinatie van het NPP is door de financiers opgedragen aan de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onder- zoek NWO, en ondergebracht bij het NWO Gebied Aard- en Levenswetenschappen (ALW). Nederland heeft om meerdere redenen een polair onderzoeksprogramma. De poolgebieden zijn zeer gevoelig voor klimaatverandering: ze vormen de polsslag van het klimaatsysteem. De klimaatveranderingen in de poolgebieden hebben grote fysieke, ecologische, sociale en economische gevolgen tot ver daarbuiten. Door de wereldwijde circulatiesystemen (atmosfeer, oceanen) worden veranderingen in de poolgebieden over de hele wereld voel- baar, ook in noordwest Europa. Goed inzicht in deze veranderingen is voor Nederland belangrijk; zo is Nederland als laaggelegen land kwetsbaar voor zeespiegelstijging. Nederland neemt deel aan het Antarctisch Verdrag en heeft zich daarmee tevens verplicht te investeren in onderzoek in Antarctica. Het Zuidpoolgebied is een unieke onderzoeksom- geving waar gevolgen van klimaatverandering zeer groot en duidelijk waarneembaar zijn. Maar Nederland heeft geen territoriale claim op Antarctica en wil zo min mogelijk schade toebrengen aan de Antarctische natuur die nog grotendeels ongerept is. Daarom besloot NWO, met ondersteuning van het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (OCW), dat de al langer bestaande samenwerking met de British Antarctic Survey (BAS) uitgebreid zou moeten worden met de bouw van een Nederlandse onder- zoeksfaciliteit op een bestaande Britse basis, Rothera. Met BAS werd een plan ontwik- keld voor een laboratorium dat inhoudelijk goed aansluit op de al bestaande onderzoeks- faciliteiten op Rothera. Na een korte beschrijving van het Dirck Gerritsz laboratorium zelf (hoofdstuk 2) volgt in hoofdstuk 3 het hoofdonderwerp van deze publicatie: waarom heet het laboratorium naar een Nederlandse zeevaarder uit de zestiende eeuw? Zaken als de 80-jarige oorlog, Decima en de ontdekkingsreizen blijken een band te hebben met het moderne Nederlandse poolonderzoek in de 21e eeuw, dat in hoofdstuk 4 wordt toegelicht. 8 | 1. introduction The Netherlands Polar Programme (NPP) is a research programme that funds Dutch scientific research into and at the polar regions. The assessment of the research proposals together with the realisation and coordination of the NPP has been assigned by the financiers to the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research NWO, and NWO’s Division for the Earth and Life Sciences has assumed responsibility for this. The Netherlands has a polar research programme for several reasons. The polar regions are very sensitive to climate change: they form the heart of the world climate system. Climate change in the polar regions has major physical, ecological, social and economic consequences that extend far beyond the polar boundaries. Due to the worldwide atmospheric and oceanic circulation systems, changes in the polar regions are felt throughout the world. A good understanding of these changes is important for the Netherlands; for example, as a low- lying country the Netherlands is vulnerable to sea level rises. The Netherlands is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty and has therefore committed itself to invest in research in Antarctica. The South Pole area is a unique research environment where the consequences of climate change are very large and clearly observable. The Netherlands, however, does not have a territorial claim on Antarctica and wants to cause as little damage as possible to the Antarctic fauna and flora that are still largely untouched. NWO therefore decided, with support from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), that the most appropriate way of conducting research on Antarctica would be to expand the long-standing collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) by constructing a Dutch research facility on an existing British base, Rothera. A plan was developed with BAS for a laboratory with research capabilities that fit in well with the existing research facilities on Rothera. Chapter 2 gives a brief description of the Dirck Gerritsz Laboratory and then Chapter 3 tackles the main subject of this publication: why has the laboratory been named after a sixteenth century Dutch seaman? Issues such as the Eighty Years’ War, Decima and the voyages of discovery have a relationship with modern Dutch polar research in the twenty- first century.
