Over the past several months, UAP Diiman Chapter member Gerard Lico has been spearheading the renovation of the Rizal Coliseum in time for the SEA Games coming this November. Ar. Lico is a heritage conservation expert and fervently promotes awareness of the importance of the specialization not only to architects, but to the Filipino Society as well. With its completion this past November 26, the Rizal Memorial Coliseum moves forward as one of the city’s premiere sports complex arenas and a beacon of the Art Deco style.

The National Convention 46 Team and the CONEX Team had a meeting headed by NatCon Director and Chapter member Markel Luna, discussing the convention entitled “Fusion” for the year 2020. Joining them was chapter Director for Business Development Florencio Sebastian III and the UAP National President, Ar. Benjamin Panganiban Jr.

The two-day seminar entitled “Pag-Aboll: Facets of Mindanao” was Mindanao’s first interdisciplinary research conference held which explored the different aspects that affect the communities in Mindanao such as the Architectural space, Risk and Development Communication, Socio-cultural spaces, eco-criticism and others. Among the several keynote speakers was UAP DIlimaner Gerard Lico giving his take on the importance of Architectural spaces in society.

It was a swell night with a host of different board and card games for the members to enjoy!

The Executive Committee conducted a meeting to discuss the incoming events for the UAP Diliman Chapter. Among the topics were the status of membership, incoming CPD seminars, the Chapter Christmas Party, the incoming Chapter elections and other miscellaneous chapter activities. Attending the meeting were the ExeCom members along with the immediate past president Apol Estabilo, and past presidents Florencio Sebastian III and Tina Puno.

As part of the International Education Week 2019, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) had invited UAP Diliman Chapter Member Edson Cabalfin to give a talk about the exhibit “The City Who Had Two Navels.” His talk focused on the two “navels” being colonialism and neoliberalism, and how they respectively impact the urban landscape of the Philippines.

Continuing the partnership between UNICEF and the UP Diliman School of Urban Planning, the seminar for Child- Responsive Urban Planning produced another batch of trainers for future events on the topic. The program is being conducted continuously and UAP Diliman Chapter member Geomilie Guittap is one of its primary trainers and lecturers.

UAP Diliman Chapter Member Stephanie Gilles was recently part of the official Contract Signing for the Design Consultancy of 3 School Campuses in Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia. After months of planning, Filipino Architects together with the US Army Corps of Engineers win the international bidding. The project will be a joint venture of SNG Design Enterprise in association with Mohri PA Associates and Ninecubes Architecture.

With the Rizal Memorial Coliseum as one of the most premiere examples of heritage conservation in the present, Ar. Lico provided valuable insights on the topic based on his diverse experiences with the practice.
