TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to on the . On streets and suburban sidewalks in many , we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends.

Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For , the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! —James Field, Copyright © J. An Act of Faith

I believe that there is one , and that in this one God there are three persons. That the Son of God was made man for us, that He died upon the Cross, rose again from the dead and ascended into heaven. I believe that the Son of God will come again at the Last Day, and call all men to judgment. I believe this because Christ is the Son of God and therefore can neither deceive nor be deceived; and because He has confirmed His teaching by many miracles. Moreover I believe whatever the Catholic Church by Christ's authority proposes to us to be believed; I believe it because the Catholic Church is guided and defended against error by the . O God, increase my faith.

An Act of Hope

O my God, I hope that after death You will admit me to everlasting happiness, and that You will give me here such means as are essential to the attainment of that happiness. I trust that You will grant me for this end the grace of the Holy Spirit, such temporal good things as are necessary to me, pardon of sin, help in time of need, and a gracious answer to my petitions. I hope this, because You, Who are almighty and all-bountiful and ever-faithful to Your promises, have promised these things to me, and because Christ, my Lord and Savior, has merited them for my by His Sacred Passion and death upon the Cross. O God, increase my hope.

An Act of Charity

My God, I love You with my whole heart, and above all things, because You are supreme beauty and perfection, because You are my greatest benefactor and Your love for me is infinite. I will, therefore, think of You in all my actions; I will avoid even the slightest sins; I will give You thanks for all Your benefits and for all You give me to suffer, and I will love my neighbor because he is Your child and made after Your image. O God, increase my charity.
