  • Onomastics – Using Naming Patterns in Genealogy
Onomastics – Using Naming Patterns in Genealogy 1. Where did your family live before coming to America? 2. When did your family come to America? 3. Where did your family first settle in America? Background Onomastics or onomatology is the study of proper names of all kinds and the origins of names. Toponomy or toponomastics, is the study of place names. Anthroponomastics is the study of personal names. Names were originally used to identify characteristics of a person. Over time, some of those original meanings have been lost. Additionally, patterns developed in many cultures to further identify a person and to carry on names within families. In genealogy, knowing the naming patterns of a cultural or regional group can lead to breaking down brick walls. Your great-great-grandfather’s middle name might be his mother’s maiden name – a possible clue – depending on the naming patterns used in that time and place. Of course, as with any clues, you need to find documents to back up your guesses, but the clues may lead you in the right direction. Patronymics Surnames based on the name of the father, such as Johnson and Nielson, are called patronyms. Historically people only had one name, but as the population of an area grew, more was needed. Many cultures used patronyms, with every generation having a different “last name.” John, the son of William, would be John Williamson. His son, Peter, would be Peter Johnson; Peter’s son William would be William Peterson. Patronyms were found in places such as Scandinavia (sen/dottir), Scotland Mac/Nic), Ireland (O’/Mac/ni), Wales (ap/verch), England (Fitz), Spain (ez), Portugal (es), Italy (di/d’/de), France (de/des/du/le/à/fitz), Germany (sen/sohn/witz), the Netherlands (se/sen/zoon/dochter), Russia (vich/ovna/yevna/ochna), Poland (wicz/wski/wsky/icki/-a), and in cultures using the Hebrew (ben/bat) and Arabic (ibn/bint) languages.

  • The Late Sheikh Abdullah Azzam's Books
Combating Terrorism Center Guest Commentary The Late Sheikh Abdullah Azzam’s Books Part III: Radical Theories on Defending Muslim Land through Jihad LCDR Youssef Aboul‐Enein, MSC, USN The Combating Terrorism Center United States Military Academy West Point, NY http://www.ctc.usma.edu Please direct all inquiries to Brian Fishman [email protected] 845.938.2801 Introduction Sheikh Abdullah Azzam is a name that only gets attention among true students of Islamist militancy, yet he has had a tremendous impact on Usama Bin Laden and left him with the tools needed to establish a global jihadist network. Azzam was born in Jenin, Palestine in 1941, and was evicted from his hometown of Jenin in the 1967 Six‐Day War. He spent years pursuing his studies in Islamic jurisprudence attending university in Syria and graduating with a doctorate in Islamic studies from the prestigious Al‐Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He was nicknamed the fighting cleric for his obsession with jihadist ideology and the militant works of ibn Taymiyyah (1258 AD). Azzam believed the only way to reclaim his lost homeland was through violent jihad which later became his bsession. On or about 1980, Azzam realized that the Arab jihadists fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan required organization, safe house, and structure. He established Maktab al‐Khidmat lil Mujahideen (The Services Offices for Arab Jihadists) which attracted Usama Bin Laden, then graduating from King Abdul‐ Aziz University to join his new venture. Azzam convinced Bin Laden that his financial connections, business experience, and dedication would be of great use to his new organization in Pakistan.

  • The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
The meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Originally translated by Meric Casaubon About this edition Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus was Emperor of Rome from 161 to his death, the last of the “Five Good Emperors.” He was nephew, son-in-law, and adoptive son of Antonius Pius. Marcus Aurelius was one of the most important Stoic philosophers, cited by H.P. Blavatsky amongst famous classic sages and writers such as Plato, Eu- ripides, Socrates, Aristophanes, Pindar, Plutarch, Isocrates, Diodorus, Cicero, and Epictetus.1 This edition was originally translated out of the Greek by Meric Casaubon in 1634 as “The Golden Book of Marcus Aurelius,” with an Introduction by W.H.D. Rouse. It was subsequently edited by Ernest Rhys. London: J.M. Dent & Co; New York: E.P. Dutton & Co, 1906; Everyman’s Library. 1 Cf. • Names in Multi-Lingual, -Cultural and -Ethic Contact
Oliviu Felecan, Romania 399 Romanian-Ukrainian Connections in the Anthroponymy of the Northwestern Part of Romania Oliviu Felecan Romania Abstract The first contacts between Romance speakers and the Slavic people took place between the 7th and the 11th centuries both to the North and to the South of the Danube. These contacts continued through the centuries till now. This paper approaches the Romanian – Ukrainian connection from the perspective of the contemporary names given in the Northwestern part of Romania. The linguistic contact is very significant in regions like Maramureş and Bukovina. We have chosen to study the Maramureş area, as its ethnic composition is a very appropriate starting point for our research. The unity or the coherence in the field of anthroponymy in any of the pilot localities may be the result of the multiculturalism that is typical for the Central European area, a phenomenon that is fairly reflected at the linguistic and onomastic level. Several languages are used simultaneously, and people sometimes mix words so that speakers of different ethnic origins can send a message and make themselves understood in a better way. At the same time, there are common first names (Adrian, Ana, Daniel, Florin, Gheorghe, Maria, Mihai, Ştefan) and others borrowed from English (Brian Ronald, Johny, Nicolas, Richard, Ray), Romance languages (Alessandro, Daniele, Anne, Marie, Carlos, Miguel, Joao), German (Adolf, Michaela), and other languages. *** The first contacts between the Romance natives and the Slavic people took place between the 7th and the 11th centuries both to the North and to the South of the Danube. As a result, some words from all the fields of onomasiology were borrowed, and the phonological system was changed, once the consonants h, j and z entered the language.

  • Apostolic Discourse and Christian Identity in Anglo-Saxon Literature

Wright, Chair Associate Professor Renée Trilling Associate Professor Robert W. Barrett Professor Emerita Marianne Kalinke ii ABSTRACT “Apostolic Discourse and Christian Identity in Anglo-Saxon Literature” argues that Anglo-Saxon religious writers used traditions about the apostles to inspire and interpret their peoples’ own missionary ambitions abroad, to represent England itself as a center of religious authority, and to articulate a particular conception of inspired authorship. This study traces the formation and adaptation of apostolic discourse (a shared but evolving language based on biblical and literary models) through a series of Latin and vernacular works including the letters of Boniface, the early vitae of the Anglo- Saxon missionary saints, the Old English poetry of Cynewulf, and the anonymous poem Andreas. This study demonstrates how Anglo-Saxon authors appropriated the experiences and the authority of the apostles to fashion Christian identities for members of the emerging English church in the seventh and eighth centuries, and for vernacular religious poets and their readers in the later Anglo-Saxon period. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to many people for their help and support throughout the duration of this dissertation project.
