NEW SCHOOL NAME INFORMATION SHEET Here is some key general information that will be helpful in choosing a new school name based on these 2 main rules from the Board’s School Name Policy (S.07). 1. TCDSB schools MUST have either “Catholic Elementary or Catholic Secondary School in their official school name, unless otherwise approved by the Board. 2. A TCDSB Catholic school shall be given the name of Our Lord, Our Lady, a Saint, a Catholic tradition, a local parish church, a closed school, or an exemplary Catholic person of local, national, international, or historic significance. A list of current TCDSB school names and those of our closed schools is provided for your information. Please see the Questions and Answers below that will help you understand the process. According to our School Name Policy (S.07), the naming consultation and selection process is led by the local School Superintendent (Dr. Jim Saraco) who will then submit a recommended name to the Director of Education. After all names have been submitted the Director of Education shall submit a report to the Administrative and Corporate Services Committee of the Board for review outlines all names proposed and their rationale, and recommend that the Board select a name, and inform the consolidated school communities of the decision. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q. What is an example of a Catholic Tradition, or Exemplary Catholic that the TCDSB has already used? A. A Catholic Tradition would be something linked to our faith. TCDSB school names such as Blessed Sacrament, Transfiguration of our Lord, Annunciation, Holy Trinity, etc. are examples. Under our exemplary Catholic person category we have Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School. Q. How will we get to a short list of names? A. Once all the suggestions are gathered, the school principals, working together with Superintendent Saraco, will set up the voting process that fits the needs of the two school communities in consultation with the Catholic School Parent Councils. Q. How long will this process take? A. The goal is to have a recommended name approved by the Board of Trustees before the current school year ends in June. Q. Will the new school name be in place on the building by September? A. Yes, our Planning and Facilities department have designated this as a priority to have the new name on the building in time for the beginning of the new school year this September.
