FROM THE BOARD Summary of Board Highlights and Decisions ______

Wednesday, February 8, 2006 Administrative and Corporate Services Committee Wednesday, February 1, 2006 Human Resources, Program and Religious Affairs Committee ______

Board approves amended Sweatshop Free Purchasing Policy The Board approved an amended Sweatshop Free Purchasing Policy (F.P.04) that includes a requirement of full public disclosure and third party monitoring. The Board is entering into a two-year pilot to join with other Catholic boards in Ontario to contract with the Workers’ Rights Consortium to monitor fair labour practices in factories. The cost of this monitoring is not to exceed $10,000 per year. The policy will apply to all apparel, not just school uniforms. The policy in its entirety will be posted on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org (see policies).

Recommendations regarding transportation funding formula Resulting from the investigation into the death of Allyceea Ennis, a student in Thunder Bay, the Board is requesting that the Ministry of Education take into consideration the Chief Coroner’s recommendations when developing the new transportation funding formula. The recommendation to secure students up to the age of 5 and weighing less than 50 pounds on school buses may prove to be logistically and financially challenging. The Board currently spends $2.3 million more on transportation than it receives from the Ministry for this purpose. The Board is also asking OCSTA to endorse this position.

Anaphylaxis Policy S.M.15 approved The Board has approved Policy S.M.15 dealing with Anaphylaxis. It is the policy of TCDSB to create allergen-aware environments in its schools and workplaces. In order to protect the health and safety of students and staff, the TCDSB will develop regulations and administrative procedures which will comply with Sabrina’s Law 2005, S.O.2005 Chapter 7. The policy in its entirety will be posted on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org (see policies).

TCDSB to consider joint venture projects Joint venture projects at Albion Gardens Public School/St. John Vianney, Whitfield Public School/Venerable John Merlini, Castlebar Public School/St. Josaphat and Melody Public School/St. Simon will be included for consideration in the Long Term Accommodation Plan. Development options include two individual detached elementary schools with some shared/join site amenities, semi-detached or linked adjacent elementary schools with a shared child care centre and some joint site amenities and integrated elementary schools with a child care centre and joint site amenities. The Board is embarking on a community information sessions regarding its Long Term Accommodation Plan this spring.

Pilot project to explore networking technology for portable classrooms The Board is moving forward with a pilot project at St. Simon Catholic School in an effort to develop a solution for securely providing computers and networking technology for use in portable classrooms. The use of wireless networking technology including workstation software image and user response time is one aspect of this design being tested. A follow-up on the outcomes of this pilot project will be reported to the Board in September 2006.

Mighty Trojans fly under hoops radar

SAM LASKARIS, The Mirror, 02/10/06

The Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans could very well be one of the best-kept secrets on the local high school hoops scene and that sits rather well with Trojans coach Des Hennessy. "I don't care if anybody talks about us," Hennessy said of his local high school senior boys' basketball team. The Trojans, who compete in the West Division of the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA), posted an impressive 10-1 regular season mark. Michael Power/St. Joseph concluded its regular season with a convincing 76-30 victory over Chaminade College on Thursday. Despite its dominating performances this year, the Trojans have been overshadowed by a pair of other league powers, fellow Etobicoke rivals Father Henry Carr Crusaders and Scarborough's Titans. The Crusaders finished atop the league's West Division with a perfect 11-0 mark. And the Titans, who captured the silver medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAAA tournament last year, ended up in first place in the 10-club East Division with a unblemished 9-0 record. This year, the league is eligible to send two squads to OFSAA's AAAA championships, scheduled for March 6 to 8 in Waterloo. "No question Mother Teresa and Henry Carr are the two teams to beat," Hennessy said. The Titans downed the Crusaders in the 2005 TDCAA final to advance to the provincials. The Trojans would dearly love to compete at this year's OFSAA competition but that goal will be hard to attain since Mother Teresa and Henry Carr are also in the same league. "That poses a bit of a problem," Hennessy said. "We have to get through them." Hennessy said his charges are not expressing concern about the lack of attention on them this season. "They haven't said much about it," he said. "But we know we have a good squad." The Trojans were beaten 66-51 by the Crusaders in their regular season matchup held on Jan. 24. "We played a good first half but the third quarter let us down," Hennessy said. Michael Power/St. Joseph has also squared off against Mother Teresa this season. The Titans defeated the Trojans by 22 points in a game at a tournament Mother Teresa played host to last month. The Trojans are expected to kick off their playoffs this week, either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Its opening-round opponent will be Cardinal Newman, which posted a 2-7 record and placed seventh in the TDCAA's East Division.

Volleyball Rebels a hit SAM LASKARIS, The Mirror 02/09/06

If Marshall McLuhan Rebels coach Kristopher Feric wants to know which team will show up for any given game he simply looks to the opposition. "We have a strong team," Feric said of his local high school senior girls volleyball club. "But they tend to play at the same level as other teams. If we are playing a weaker team they will not play as well. And if we're play a good team, we seem to play to their level." Despite some inconsistent play, the Rebels, who compete in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association's Central Division, managed to win their first eight regular season contests. With its undefeated record, Marshall McLuhan was atop the standings in its 11-team division. The Rebels were scheduled to play Loretto Abbey yesterday (Thursday), in a match held after The Moment's press deadline. Marshall McLuhan will conclude its regular season action on Monday with a road match versus Loretto College. Feric wouldn't be surprised to see his charges finish off their regular season undefeated. "I think we can keep it going, at least in our division," he said. "But there are teams in some of the other divisions that I think are better than ours." The TDCAA also includes a 10-club East Division and an eight-squad West Division. The Rebels' roster features 11 players. And the majority of them are only in Grade 11. "I think we'll have a pretty good team next year as well," Feric said. "We should have most of our players back and our junior team has only lost once this year so they've got some good players as well." Feric is not discounting the possibility of winning a TDCAA crown this season. "I think we've got the potential to go all the way," he said. "Maybe our last couple of games though will be difficult." Key performers for the Rebels include Alexandra Majka, Sarah Bugeja and Lilian Goncalves.

amazing outcome and the first time they have attempted such a public demonstration of music, drama, short film and storytelling. The evening also raised just under $300 for Videz, an international charity which supports the education of women in developing countries.

GROUP BENEFIT PLAN - POSITIVE ENROLMENT COMING IN JUNE 2006

Attention: All Toronto Catholic District School Board Staff Participating in Family Coverage under the Extended Health and Dental Plans

Further to our previous communication regarding “Positive Enrolment”, employees enrolled in family coverage in the Dental and/or Extended Health Care Plans will be receiving a statement in the next two weeks identifying current dependant information that we have on file. The statement is similar to the employee pay statement. However, it is identified as “Please note, important benefit plan notice contained inside, please read carefully”.

When you receive the Dependant Information Statement, please note that the following action is required on this time sensitive correspondence:

Correct Information If the dependant information that we have identified for you is correct, you may retain the form for your records. No further action from you is required at this time.

Incorrect Information If any of the information on the form is incorrect/out of date and needs to be updated, please return the form (with corrections noted on the form) to the Benefits and Compensation Department via Board courier service by the deadline date of February 28, 2006.

If we do not receive your form by February 28, 2006, it will be assumed that the information that we have on file is correct. Further, we will be providing this information to Great West Life, our benefits carrier in order to process claims for eligible dependants only.

In order to avoid any claims from being denied by Great West Life for eligible dependants, please ensure that you review the statement and provide us up to date information by the deadline date of February 28, 2006.

We will be working closely with our benefits carrier to ensure a smooth transition to Positive Enrolment.

Please direct your questions to: Benefits & Compensation Department 416-222-8282, ext. 2220, 2151, 2219, or 2324
